Reliving The War takes an in-depth look at the Monday Night War era of pro wrestling. Every episode of WWF Raw and every episode of WCW Nitro gets covered, and the goal is to find out who had the best show each and every week.
It's the night after WWF Fully Loaded '99 and Mr. McMahon must leave the WWF. Vince appears on Raw this week to say his goodbyes, but Stone Cold Steve Austin has a few things to say to McMahon before he leaves. Triple H is scheduled to take on Ken Shamrock, and a new alliance gets formed between The Big Show and The Undertaker known as the "Unholy Alliance".
On WCW Nitro Hollywood Hulk Hogan has a tag match against Kevin Nash. Both Hogan and Nash must find tag team partners for this Nitro main event match and Sting agrees to team up with The Hulkster. David Flair defends his US Title against Chris Benoit, and Shane Douglas talks about why he's now in World Championship Wrestling.

The look on Vince's face in the thumbnail
"WHAT THE HELL IS DEAN DOUGLAS DOING HERE?"
This old fool wouldn't know a talented wrestler of one pissed in his face
😂
😂😂
"Who hired Dean Douglas?" - Vince said angrily, probably
@@Wanemu exactly. He knew Dean wasn't winning the war for anybody
Having that Countdown to the Millennium clock come up out of nowhere, that’s some visceral nostalgia.
And a great teaser of some Walls that are about to come down!
Can't believe we're never gonna see Vince on RTW again.
Ahem...
Reminds me of when Terry Funk retired in 1997…sad day in wrestling history 😢😢…
@@bryanmack4054Well at least we liked Terry.
At least Ric Flair went out with a fantastic match at Wrestlemania 24 and never wrestled again.
@@TheSBleeder yeah.
NEVER AGAIN.
@@TheSBleeder lmfao
David Flair is the highlight of RTW. Who are you to doubt David Flair. He's a jam up guy.
Okay David.... 😂
He's more of a Jelly Up Guy. Like, it's sorta right, but still off.
I hope he does a greatest hits video of him. lol
I'm reliving the war so often I've got PTSD!
“We’ll come back to this in a mufuggin moment “
This. This is why I’m here 😂
Yup. There is something special about this man's spoken word. I could listen to him read through all 1004 holds of Jerhico
"Backstage Ken Shamrock is refusin' help cause he's way too hard for any medical attention."
but his body is too soft since hes always hurt
The nasty boys have entered the chat
That’s what she said
Are you white?
They had to always have him k-fab hurt. Otherwise he would be unstoppable.
During the pandemic I started rewatching Nitro starting at episode one. I made it to like March or April of 2000 and couldn’t finish. Looking forward to finally finishing it by watching RTW 👍🏻
Kudos to you…I couldn’t have made it that far. January 2020 max for me.
Back in the day, I was already gone at this point. We had stopped switching between stations long before this, and then when college rolled around it was dead. I mean, continue to watch this?
I don’t know though. Watching Hogan get man-handled in the opening was fun and unusual. Even if they could have convinced him to do that back in the day, not necessarily lose the belt but just get laid out a few times to make his matches vaguely unpredictable, would have worked wonders.
WCW financials are some of the most eye popping things you'll ever see. No wonder they went under just no vision or anything
You have got to be joking. WCW revolutionized the wrestling industry and dragged it out of the doldrums of the early 90s.
It's funny people think Steve Blackman used a car to hurt Kenny boy. Blackman himself actually transformed into the blackmobile, which of course is maroon to hide the blood stains of his enemies. Blackman stepping out of the blackmobile was merely a mental projection of himself, cos he can do that.
That's mufuggin right.
They say that when the bogeyman goes to bed he checks his wardrobe for Chuck Norris hut when Chuck Norris goes to bed he checks his wardrobe for Steve Muffuggin Blackman
Darn right

Nobody gonna talk about how badass Sting’s face paint is in this episode? Looks sick
That David Flair promo was one of the most painful things I've seen covered by Relieving the War so far, which IS saying quite a lot.
AND WE’VE SEEN HOW PAINFUL HIS MATCHES ARE!
woooOOOooo 😑
At least his matches had unintended comedic value.
It wasnt that painful,Torrie was there, looking amazing
@@SUPERROSS1000 She accomplished her goal. I'm 100% sure they put her with David to take as much attention away from him as humanly possible. Because, my GOD... that was rough
This give or take a week is when I switched over to WWF
Same
As someone who only watched WWF I’m interested in your perspective. What ultimately led you to stop watching WCW?
@@cyrus2546 I had friends who watched WWF and some watch WCW. I knew about some stuff going on storyline wise in WWF, and just hanging out with friends watching WWF it just look way more interesting that’s pretty much it.
@@cyrus2546for me personally first ever time I laid eyes on wrestling was wwf… I grew up a only child in the 90s so I had my own room with a tv but only basic cable until like late 1998 before that I could only watch wcw in my room unless my living room where I had cable at wasn’t being occupied..
I think it was the "Sting wins the presidency of WCW" storyline leading to... nothing that also got me to check out. People who exclusively blame Russo forget how dire the first 9 months of WCW were.
I forgot how much early Game Triple H loved himself a backward Kangol hat
His hats were awesome. Loved him wear it 98-01. He was wearing it in his DX time also before The Game.
Shane Douglas debuting on Nitro and Vic Grimes randomly showing up on Raw really has me wondering where ECW is at as a company on our timeline.
Would of been kool if he added ECW updates and results that was happening during this time...
@shady3legend Definitely! At least every once and awhile, such as who the champions are, what the main event scene looks like, and what stars are debuting.
@shady3legend Me too. They didn't air on Monday so they don't qualify, but at this point ECW was prolly the best wrestling company in North America on content alone.
ECW was great in mid 1999! Dudleyz, Taz kicking ass, and Awesome vs Tanaka rivalry kicked off around this time. Year 2000 is where they really got their roster cut, but 1999 is great stuff.
Bret: HE'S AN ANIMAL!
Owen: AN ANIMAL! AN ANIMAL! 13:02
This is one of the coolest long running series on CZcams. Keep up the great work
We've officially entered the Boss Man's chaotic evil phase. I can't wait.
Yup! As soon as I saw Pepper, I admittedly got a little excited.
I love how HHH always benefits every time Vince gets booted from his company, even back in 1999. The Game indeed...
Really? In Sept 99, just two months away in RTW, the disgrace Vince McMahon gives himself his own world title and puts himself over Triple H in the process, forever cementing Hunter as a glorified jobber.
And today we begin the strangely complicated journey to the WWF Title match at Summerslam, Russo and the boys in creative go wild during this build!
with a sitting Governor of an American state along for the ride.
Silly build to me.
Austin didn’t wanna put HHH over, that’s why it was a strange build
Highlight of the week every week. I miss when wrestling was like this
The greatest internet drama weekly
Vince is gone and its all about HHH.
**checks date for this Raw episode**
That comment has aged pretty well.

July 99, just two months before Sept 99 when the disgrace Vince McMahon gives himself his own world title, jobbing out Hunter in the process.
Love how Gangrel is referred to as “the Funky Vampire”
He should go to aew. Get the brood back together.
1:49 “Memphinites” 😂 we go by Memphians, brother!
Jim Ross: na na na na hey hey goodbye 😂
Over halfway through '99 with 2000 being the last full year left. Gonna miss this series when it's done but I'm looking forward to seeing WCW 2000
Sigh WCW 2000
Well you going to see an jam up game of hot potato even Dewey from Scream franchise gets to be the WCW CHAMPION
@@TheBandit025Nova And the rise of Jeff Jarrett, Kidman vs. Hogan, POLE MATCHES, 3 Count, Tank Abbott, etc.
@@vciotoli2126 I like 3 Count.
@@Speedyreedy1218 Yeah true, 3 Count actually had a decent gimmick and could go in the ring. I guess instead we get DAVID FLAIR AND CROWBAR
Thursday=Reliving The War
Always looking forward to what's gonna happen next...
We're 5 months away from The New Millennium (2000)
LET'S GO
You're telling me Bill Goldberg has busted his own head open more than ONCE?
Well the doors sure weren’t gimmicked.
Aaah yes...the first of Big Shows MAAAAAAAANY Face/Heel turns that goes ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE.
Ha.
Kane too.
You mean other than the other two turns he'd already had in the 7 months he'd been there?
@skyatollah2skyharder276 When he premiered it was a heel and then he turned face by joining the union, and now he's a heel again. This is just the start of the trend. OH! He should keep a counter of times he turns!
Val Venus also.
WWE wasted The Giant so badly. His WCW run is easily the best few years of his career.
Isn't it so ironic that Cleveland was the city of the Raw after Vince's "end of an era" and would be the city where Vince literally put WCW out of its misery in less than a year and a half?
Uh, it was such a missed opportunity to make a REAL invasion angle. If Vince just kept the buying of WCW off TV and suddenly had WWE guys actually invade and destroy WCW over a few months it would have been awesome. Hindsight though lol
It would have been atleast a year. The big stars had huge contracts and were not about to take 1/5 of what they were owed to go back to work. So yah
Good memory/eye!
@@Miguel-mp7uz It would've been worth waiting a year.
@@Speedyreedy1218 nah. They pulled big numbers with that ppv. They got what they could out of it.
Cannot wait to see WB cover THAT Taker and Big Show promo in a few weeks. 🤣
David Flairs deflated woooooo set off my dog.
Heenan looks so done.
I love seeing the countdown clock it really takes me back like it was yesterday
Sonny Onoo was a very important Person Backstage Handling Stuff between WCW and Japan and the WCW in Korea Event as well
In 1995 / 1996
That David Flair promo is a clear sign that wrestling is in a need of a savior Anyways, can't for that clock to hit zero so I can party like it's 1999 when Alex Wright debuts.
First time watching rtw the day its released. Only took 6 months of catching up 😅
I'm behind. I just started watching around KOTR time and Haven't gone back.
I was behind too. Trust me, it doesn’t take long to catch up.
I love the random little facts like Chase Tatum facing John Cena. Excellent work.
That intro was hard asf 🌶️🌶️
I need a full Mean Street Posse song ASAP
Sonny was good friends with Eric Bischoff , I'm sure that helped his pay scale. Got to meet Sonny and Ultimo Dragon a few weeks back, cool fellas
Remember me & my friends traveled down to Cleveland to see this Raw we also went to the taping of Raw in Columbus the night after
Shane Douglas looks like the result of someone using AI to de-age the awkward smiling old man meme in the thumbnail.
The start of RAW on this I always will remember. Just that chaotic 'whats going to happen' that you have never had in years. Just loved that kind of, got to tune in straight away in case I miss anything. Dead art form in the streaming world.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing back the animal skit! AN ANIMAL! AN ANIMAL!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
David Flair was an instant channel changer in 1999 and it's hard to not skip through 25 years later.
Watching David Flair, or The Rock and Stone Cold on the other channel. Not a hard choice!!
I'd watch David Flair over Rock and Stone Cold.
@@Speedyreedy1218 I'd watch Duane Gill over David.
@@marcludwick512 I'd watch Gilberg or David over the aforementioned.
@@Speedyreedy1218 yep 100%. I'd much rather watch David Flair than watch Keeping Up With The McMahons.
THE RAW DEBUT OF PEPPER! Hopefully things go well for that little doggo, I see a bright future ahead 🤣
They really were spinning Their wheels with Harlem Heat only for Stevie to turn on Booker T. And introduce out of shape Ahmed Johnson (Harlem Heat 2000). Also Jericho makes his debut in 2 weeks.
Who are you to leave out El Dandy from the intro?
I will never get tired of hearing the Mean Street Posse remix. The lyrics sounds like a teenaged boy explaining to his friend how he lost his virginity
I recently read Jericho's book when he talked about losing his in an embarrassing 20 seconds.
Last week was my birthday 21th, thank you for put every thursday reliving The war
Twenty-oneth birthday, eh? Is that different from your 21st?
@@RantingRamsay sorrry i don't speak english very good, but yeah, i'm 21 years old
Happy Belated Birthday
Oh god, got a visceral reaction when David Flair took that back suplex onto his arm under his back, thank god he appeared to be made of jelly
Anyone else love that mean street posse theme?😂😂
I saw HHH and Shamrock run this back at a house show. When HHH called Shamrock a puss, I waited for the crowd to get quiet then shouted "GIVE CHYNA A LOW BLOW!" HHH looked at me and giggled. Highlight of the evening 😂
And then the whole building including Vince stopped the show and gave you a standing ovation. Thank you for your service
😁😁😁 What was the finish?
@Speedyreedy1218 same. HHH beat him up until the ref stopped the match. Pretty much a carbon copy of the raw match.
@@Miguel-mp7uz 100% accurate 😂
We’re getting so close to the Edge and Christian versus Hardy’s tag team ladder match.
And soon we’ll be at
WM2000
"Cold as ice! I hope that car is ok." LMAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm actually caught up I started watching these back in February 4 years of reliving the war in the span of months feels weird.
I very much enjoyed Bob Holly when he was doing his super heavy weight gimmick his mic work was great
Me too, the best was when he called Gangrel Dracula and a fat bastard lol.
I genuinely can’t understand how anyone can look at David Flair’s “everything” and say he deserves a spot on tv. It’s not even to say the nepotism is an issue. His sister will do just fine in about a decade. There’s an art to being a coward shitheel champion. Yoy have to be able to talk if nothing else. You have to make the crowd want to see you loose, Honkey Tonk Man famously did this perfectly for a full calendar year. Every single time I’ve seen David Flair on camera the only thing I feel is embarrassment.
It’s absolutely fascinating HOW MUCH of a push he got and seeing it might be my favorite part of these things.
His sister's promos used to suck. She had years of help in NXT and tons of mentors. David didn't have that benefit in 99.
I was so confused if the nWo was a thing during this time. Nash never stopped wearing nWo gear but yet Hogan has his nWo Hollywood Hogan gear haha. Well thankfully he was never in nWo again and was gone not much longer after this.
Shane Douglas looks like he knows vince's secrets
I really think Ivory was born about 25 Years too early. She would fit perfectly into the WWE Woman's Divison now, because she was a very capable Wrestler, unfortunately back then she was the only capable woman's wrestler.
Jackie?
@@Speedyreedy1218 People would have been all over Jacqueline if she was active these days.
The beginning of the Undertaker's metamorphosis from Deadman to American Badass.
Something to note: Sonny Onoo and Bischoff were friends since the 80's. It was Sonny's failed game that Bischoff used to get into the AWA, as Eric figured that Verne could sell it during the AWA show to offload the warehouse full of them.
That's why Sonny got paid. It's also hilarious to consider that he was part of the racial discrimination lawsuit against Turner when he was getting paid more than a lot of the roster.
11:07 From what I have read. Finlay did suffer a legit injury during a match against Brian Knobbs the night before at a House Show in Jackson Mississippi. The injury nearly cost him his leg.
He doesn't show up again until later in the year where he ended up forming a tag team with Knobbs.
Only two weeks until the return of red and yellow Hulk. I can't wait to hear the reaction.
So glad that Mr. Blackman makes the opening.
Looking at that clock, it's saying we got 2 more weeks until "something" happens. So August 9 or Episode 196.
I know what's coming of course, and I cannot wait to see it again.
Who in the blue hell could it be? Lol
clrarly shin blackman@@michaelmcmahon3099
@michaelmcmahon3099 it's Blue Kane
I'm pumped to see Shane Douglas in WCW! I can put on one of his matches and finally get some sleep.
Mystery Men was lowkey ahead of its time. Worth a look if you haven't seen it, or it's been a few years
It's a good day when a Relieving the War episode pops up.
Vincent with the call out 😂 RIP Virgil/Mike, you had a long and quite involved career. I swear I see him in every other Bios episode!
Wrestling Bios has been reviewing 1 era of wrestling WHILE WWE has transitioned through a few in real time. Wild
the never ending loyalty to Steve Blackman is crazy and I am here for it!!!!
Looks like Davey Flair got into Tori's makeup. I think he's some kind of robotics experiment 🤔
This is the first time I heard the "Na Na Na Na" chants. Still sticks with me today.
I had forgotten about Billy's unique ring attire in this era. Attitude era.
It was cute.
Dean Douglas was dead serious in that promo too. He was & still is a top 5 biggest mark of all time
My two favorite things about this show is the mean street posse song and Bret talking about his cat smokey.
Despite WCW being well on the way to being unmatchable, it's still important to note just how popular wrestling was becoming. 10.5 combined Nielsen rating, Episode 2 had a 4.6. It was an awesome time.
Raw is War October 18, 1999 is the one i went to in Columbus, Ohio. The night right after No Mercy. Can't wait for you to cover it!
Is that the one where HHH says he's "that damn good" for the first time?
I love thursdays so much.
So, Blackman had a chat with Goldberg, and Billy agreed to help him by destroying the country music source that weakened him on Sunday. Now he can focus dealing with the backstabber Shamrock, and no country music will effect it again.
So Nash turned face because Ric Flair screwed Hogan out of the title at Uncensored and DDP 'injured' Hogan at Spring Stampede. So Nash wins the world title at Slamboree and spends the next two PPV's feuding with Savage and a returning Sid. Lost the title to Savage at Bash at the Beach. That didn't work for Hogan so he naturally wins the title from Savage the next night with help from Nash. Then next week Nash turns on Hogan and forms a team with Sid and Rick Steiner. WCW in 1999.
In other words-
“WE’RE RUNNING OUTTA IDEAS, Uhhh… UHHHHHH!? F-face turn for Nash?”
I suppose *maybe* the Nash/Sid/Rick alliance could work if you made it clear they still hate each other but it was an alliance of convenience against power hogging Hogan.
You just put more thought into creative than WCW ever did.
It's Thursday night and you know what that means! It's time for us all to be Reliving The War!
"I mean…Rick Steiner?" 😂💀😂💀
Love the new intro but miss the Billy Kidman air flip timed with the YEAH in the song
Looking forward to next week's episode since it was a RAW taping I actually attended! :)
Can we PLEASE keep calling David Flair The Nature Child!!!!! I haven’t laughed this hard in a month!
Not sure how new this intro is but I love it
That was the worst "wooo" ever
Good old Sonny Ono... He was Bischoff's boy, so it's no wonder his pay was so high.
Shane Douglas is the mark of marks. He said "my friends were getting screwed over". Just for those same friends to screw him over. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Loving the union underground mix in the intro. Always loved the band in general but also my 2nd favorite raw intro song haha.. killing it with the RTW every week Ryan, thanks muchly !
That random heel group of kevin nash rick steiner and sid, has to be one of the most random pairings I've ever seen, and that is saying something what a mess wcw was at the time.
Reliving the War… right on time 🔥
Imagine if Vince did a farewell speech in 2024.
I'm seriously wondering wtf was Billy Gunn wearing. LOL
