Legacy Dashboard Dynamic Theme by Truant Pixel

We are pleased to bring you this theme, created with input from SIE US, Japan, and Naughty Dog.
After multiple prototypes over the last 2 years, each of which were designed to mimic functional aspects of the PS2 Dashboard, we have been given the opportunity to combine multiple disparate elements into a single piece of theme software which mimics the sights, sounds, and functionality of the Playstation 2 Dashboard.
Upon starting up, users are treated fully recreated 'boot' sequence. PlayStation 2 logo cannot be used due to licensing restrictions, (believe me, we tried; also, using the PlayStation 4 logo in the same style was considered but ultimately not approved) so we have taken an opportunity to create a mid-boot 'Easter Egg,' which changes randomly with every login.
From there, the "Seven Stars" make an appearance, coalescing from random points to recreate the mathematical and dynamic formations to accompany the passage of time, similarly recreated from the original PlayStation 2 bios in the form of the Crystal Clock.
Color shifting is now controlled via user input, with subtle shifts in particle speed and behavior. Additionally, original audio has been taken from the PS2 hardware and recreated in the background ambience and custom keynotes for this theme.
Lastly, as is our standard, this theme has been designed for 1080p, 4k/UHD, and OLED displays.
Update: to answer some questions about how we adapted elements in this theme-
Audio: waves ambience was sampled from a PS2, with a seamless loop point mastered in the final BGM. Audio components, such as the sound of the seven stars coalescing and menu navigation, are pulled from multiple source files stored in the original PS2 bios. The PS2 hardware performed post processing (combining different files, and adjusting tempo / pitch) on these files to create each menu sound, with some variants based on certain situations: As result, certain elements always sounded a bit different each time they were played (such as the coalescing of the stars). Additionally, different variants of the PS2 hardware had slightly different implementations as well. Since we cannot manipulate the audio in this fashion, we have instead opted to use the clean, unedited samples in full.
Visuals: the crystal clock is offset to the left as this was requested by the SIEJ team. Color shifting of the clock is under user control, switching from blue to purple and back every time the upper menu is accessed. The seven star animation also responds to user input as well, speeding up subtly for an instant before returning to normal. A special normal map was used to reproduce the crystal surface materials, which responds differently depending on the angle of the light source tied to the seven stars in the center.
Elements that could not be recreated: the depth of field blur on the clock, as well as the trails of the stars-we tried a number of workarounds here, but none of them were truly satisfying. The GPU ceiling and Memory restrictions were constantly an issue as well, as we skirted with hard limits on object number and texture size constantly.
Lastly, the towers representing memory block save data could not be implemented as the PS4 theme API doesn’t allow any low level memory access. One of our prototypes did demonstrate an implementation where the blocks were random and controlled by the calendar day, however we ultimately worried this would lead to confusion, so we chose to use the ‘clean boot’ intro. Additionally, adding these blocks would have further pushed the resource limits described above as we added more elements to the main theme process. - Hry

Hands down possibly the best theme I've seen. Now they just gotta clean up their theme library so I can actually get this without passing 200 garbage themes.
notOctopicake I wish there was a filter option. There are only a handful of good theme makers but week after week it gets flooded by crap from the same makers.

redseasplitter thanks, that does work, but I wish I could filter out specific theme makers like total jigsaw, xposed, slide n go, puzzle showdown, briks. They are the main culprits that shovel the same crap on there week after week. They release 1 crappy game just so they can flood the themes section with overpriced garbage.
I WISH there was only 200 crap themes. It's more like 20,000.

Well, this will be my first theme that I have ever purchased because I never saw the appeal of buying one for my ps3 or ps4 but this ps2 inspired theme is too good to pass. Good work to whomever designed this, I hope your theme sells very well.

You were not kidding when you said technical acheivement, that's some astounding stuff to keep in mind for just a theme [i don't mean saying this as to shun it, the PS2 was an amazing console [or so i've heard] but i mean as in i don't know very many theme creators who would do all that when creating a theme]!
I've never owned or played a PS2, but I've heard some amazing things about it, and the never-unknown fact that it was the best selling console of all time.

1. I wish you had included the "memory pillars" in the first part even if they were static
2. The "seven stars" seem to be missing their trail effects which created a sort of sphere when they moved around

ChrisTheFox Few days before release usually mean everything is finalized, since it has to go through certification and everything the last few days, and since it comes out next week, that seems to be done
Perhaps they couldn't render theme. Everything here seems to be completely 2D save for the glass clock, the stars themselves have a flatter appearance than on ps2. There's only so much you can do with a theme engine.

1. Unfortunately the theme api doesn’t have access to the internal memory, so that was left out.
2. We don’t have access to the kind of blur or shader effects they employed, and the workarounds we developed just didn’t meet the quality we wanted to see. There is a very subtle trail effect in the content screen (black background) though it isn’t as prominent. It’s why we released the making of video as well.

On the first point, I understand that the towers were built off the memory which is why I asked for possible "static" towers. You seem to have had them in an earlier build actually.
My new PS4PRO feels complete with this theme on it. It's really incredible how well you guys pulled this off. It's staying as my PS4 dashboard theme for good, the only thing that could change that is if you made a theme that added the PS1 & PS3 launch screens as well and had them randomly rotate each time the console was turned on. THAT would be incredible....Thanks again, incredible job.

To whoever says the colors are too bright, they said in the video that it's made for UHD 4K and OLED displays that put out beautiful color. I think it's just optimizing it for newer TV's rather than ruining the nostalgia.
EckoFox1 the theme uses the same color space as the PS2 - the only difference is the quality of the signal (HDMI vs component) allows for greater vibrancy. At the end of the day, your display calibration will make a difference as well. :)

I am so totally buying this. i can just imagine booting this up and playing Kingdom Hearts or one of my PS2 Classics. total. Nostalgia. Overload. Even if it's not a 100% faithful recreation due to technical limitations, it's close enough!

update. i found it under the LOST legacy game under themes, this person is correct, idk why its there but its there as of feb 6 2021

bassman plays it’s on the store you have to scroll down extremely far and put the filters $2-$4 and a-z and scroll until you hit the L’s then find legacy theme and boom.

Delano762 Sony's really protective over their properties, and the PS2 (though 17 years old) is one of them. Sony was kind enough to let the theme be made, but they if don't want the logo to be used, the creator will have to oblige or get sued for using it.
Delano762 You could just play an emulated PS2 game on it, and the PlayStation 2 logo starts up. There's no reason for it to be on the main menu, as it never was on the original PS2, only when a PS2 game was played.

Created for Sony, but they wouldn't let you use the logo of their own system in a recreation of the dashboard of said system? I don't buy it.
Jonathan Dewar Guess you never heard of trademarks. Sony doesn't have to allow them to use the PS2 logo, nor make the theme at all. Sony owns the PS2 logo, so they can deny use if they please. Just be grateful this theme is commercially available.

That all looks fantastic... with the exception being the "Legacy" text after the intro. Can that be removed? Can the text labels be disabled too? They kinda ruin your stellar work on a beautiful PS2 themed dashboard. Less is more and you made it way too busy.

I remember commenting on the concept video about how good it would be to use the clock interface linked with system time on a PS4 theme. It's good Sony finally loosened up and you decided to use this interface over the concept one. Good job. 👍
