    The body swap episode despite not being that well done plot wise has some of the best jokes in the entire show… there is a bunch of great ones but my personal favourite is:
    “Are you the famous Eda the owl lady?”

      In my opinion, the body swap episode was pretty important plot wise. It strengthened the bonds between characters, it caused Luz to be more aware of magic and take it more seriously. And the most important part, it was yet another crushing and humiliating defeat with Lilith which is what led to the season finale being as intense as it was.

    One funny thing about reaching out that I never hear anyone mention is how when Luz sees how Amity dressed the abomaton she says "I think Eda has the same outfit" and like a minute later in the same scene Eda calls it "that ugly thing".

    Labyrinth runners is actually my favourite episode in the series. It's important for the plot, yet not too overwhelming and it makes a fantastic job at developing Gus, Hunter and Willow and stablishing a strong bond between them in a short amount of time and moving forward with the plot while still giving us a break from the last episodes which were quite heavy. Also, the message of it is what really makes the episode for me, it's amazing how well they manage portray anxiety and PTSD with Gus and Hunter and how it's less powerful when you have people you can trust (Hunter comforting Gus after everything he's gone through is such a powerful moment). Overall just really emotional, entertaining and an easy rewatch for me.

    There was one moment in Keeping up A-fear-ances (the episode where Mama Clawthorn was being scammed), when Eda found out what Luz and Mama Clawthorn were the one terrorizing her her she said "I have the right! to! be! upset!" as she was turned into the owlbeast. I'm really sad that was never talked about. By that point in the series, the owlbeast is triggered by emotions and I wondered how Eda dealt with the fact that feeling her emotions could result in something bad happening. I thought it was so cool how in the episode Hollow Mind, they told a story while there was a story already going on. I'm talking about how they gave us Philips backstory through the pictures in the background during the episode. That's really great storytelling 👍.
    They really managed to make that the darkest episode of the show so far. Season 3 is already on that path.
    Even though Hunters panick attack in that episode and also in Labrynth Runners are sad and painful to watch, it's also important to see something like that being represented in shows and movies because some people go through that in real life and also suffer from anxiety. His panic attack also shows how deeply hurt and traumatized this poor boy is 😔, sadly Belos will kill him if he goes back to the castle.
    The way they write characters with PTSD in this show is really well done.

    I have but one prediction for season 3 and that is that King will be the one to stop the Collector. In 'Oh Titan Where Art Thou' King expressed that he no longer wanted people to see him as a big scary monster anymore and I think that is how the Collector feels as well but just hasn't realized it yet. Because of their power the Collector never understood the weight of their actions and the consequences of them. After such a long time in isolation just to come out and see everyone is afraid and trying to take them down might be a breaking point. That's when King will realize they also don't want to be feared and will hopefully get through to them.

    "Eda's Requiem" brings many new and very interesting characters into the show, which basically already earns itself a spot here. Like Raine, every member of BATS and Darius alone make it worth it, but other than that it provides a backstory on how Eda got to where she is now. The ending of the episode also furthers both King's plot as well as the plot of the entire show.
    "Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door" is an episode I'm a little conflicted with. On one hand it tries to cram 3 individual stories into a single episode, bringing serious implications for Eda, King, and Luz. On the other hand I think that all of the plots honestly work pretty well. King's plot is what tips the audience to the fact that King is not a normal monster, Eda's plot is finally an exploration of just what her curse actually is without just weird repeated events, and I can appreciate the Luz and Amity plot because it didn't allow The Owl House to fall into the trap so many shows fall into. What I am referring to is when shows constantly tease a relationship between characters without delivering. Luz and Amity here are directly put into a relationship without any more beating around the bush, their chemistry has already been established in season 1 so they are able to just proceed.
    "Eclipse Lake" very good episode that provides both some individuality for Amity as well as establishes a dynamic between Hunter and Eda, King, and Amity. Plus the whole revelation surrounding titans blood in the portal key is massive when it comes to the rest of the series.
    "Yesterday's Lies." This is a super good episode. It finally provides context to who the other Luz is, introduces V and finally gives us more dialogue from Luz's mom. The ending of the episode is also really compelling with an amazing performance from the voice actors.
    "Elsewhere and Elsewhen" is a very interesting episode to say the least. It is the first appearance of the collector, provides to the audience direct insight that Phillip and Belos are one in the same, and creates a dynamic between Luz and Lillith.
    "Any Sport in a Storm." Honestly I wasn't a very big fan of the season 1 grudgby episode, but what this episode brings to the table honestly fixes my problems with that episode. Firstly introducing Hunter to Gus and Willow without Luz or Amity there is a very good move from a writer's standpoint because they get to establish their own individual relationship with him. We also get to see more Viney and Skara both of whom I like a side characters; and overall I just like that Willow and Gus get their time to shine here without Luz so that they are able to develop as individuals. Plus the interactions between Darius and Hunter throughout the episode are absolutely excellent and perfectly show Hunter's situation as well as call into question Darius's allegiance.
    "Reaching Out" serves mostly as a window into characterizing Amity's relationship with her father and shedding some light on her siblings as well. I just think it works really well to accomplish those goals, and the relationship parts between Luz and Amity feel really genuine here.
    "Them's the Breaks, Kid." I like seeing Eda and Raine interact.
    "Hollow Mind" is a contender for my favorite episode in the season. Obviously the impact doesn't hit when not watching the episode, but it cements Belos/Phillip as a psychopath, reveals exactly what his plan is, and provides an outlet for Hunter's entire world to be shattered. The voice acting from Bellos, Luz, and Hunter Especially sell the episode. There is not much individually to say, but it is an experience.
    "Edge of the World." Alex Hirsch does a really great job this episode with King. It really hits you with how desperately he wants to have a family, a real family of his own people. Then the revelation hits and boom King knows he's a titan, and both the audience and the character are left to ponder the implications of that.
    "Labrynth Runners" is honestly such an interesting episode. It isn't exceptionally important, it isn't the most high stakes, but still somehow it is one of my absolute favorites of the season. Gus and Hunter finally get to have some genuine interactions and they have some great "best friend" energy. We get to see how Gus and Willow met, we see Willow and Gus really trusting Hunter as the episode progresses. There is also the plot between Willow and Amity, and while yeah it is kinda cliche, I still think it fits the characters and works well. This is also the episode that illusion is expanded upon as magic which as you will have read I love.
    "O Titan, Where Art Thou" is just a really solid episode that kinda serves as the calm before the storm. Every character gets some kind of mini revelation, especially King. Plus we get more of CATS and that include Darius. Oh and Luz carves her egg palismen. Nothing more to say really
    "Clouds on the Horizon" is a great penultimate episode to season 2. It starts with some fanservice with the hyper animated kiss and then works its way through the motions of Luz and the others finding a way to get Belos. I really like the insight Alador is given here as well. Meanwhile Eda and the rest of the crew are working on their own plan, and the whole branding Eda point carried a lot of impact. Finally ending with Luz having been taken directly to Belos By Kiki Mora is a great Cliffhanger
    "Kings Tide." This is an amazing conclusion to the season and explaining it barely does it justice. It is incredibly tense in atmosphere throughout both plots and keeps up this feeling through most of the episode. I could explain it, but that is an injustice. Go rewatch the episode now.
    I am not going to explain the season 3 episodes but they would both make it. My fingers are weary, and like 3 hours have passed. Sorry for the dissertation in the comments of a video ranking Owl House Episodes but this show will not leave my brain and I wanted to get all of it off my chest and into the comment section of a youtube video where no one will care to read it but at least it is there.

    I personally heavily disagree with I Was A Teenage Abomination being the episode where the show clicks into place (I would say that episode is either The Intruder or Covention). It's a fun episode but pretty much all characters feel stereotypical, Hexside is a really generic school setting for a show about magic, teachers being unable to realize that Luz is not an abomination was kinda annoying and the plotline of the shy character who gets bullied actually being super smart or strong has been done a lot of times before. It's not a "bad" episode but I personally think it's one of the weakest of the show

    • @Rosa-he6xb
      @Rosa-he6xb Před rokem +4

      Yeah I feel like that too a bit. Willow and Gus was good for me during the episode when I first watch it and so was Amity. But it bothers me now when seeing why Amity was mean to Willow and her development afterwards. As it made no sense for Amity to bully Willow when Boscha and her gang was no where to be seen and she claimed she never wanted to bully Willow in the first place. So why did she pick on her out where no others would see them? It’s still a good episode and introduction to Willow, Gus, and Amity….but it definitely didn’t age well with the new information we learn later in S1.

    • @maliser8
      @maliser8 Před rokem +3

      I don't think it's among the weakest (although definitely in the back half) but I agree that it's more of a fun episode and the next two are more when the show clicks. And yes the teachers not realizing Luz was not an abomination did seem a little dumb.

    Here's the thing: The Owl House and its episodes are, for the most part, pretty uncontroversial within its fandom. I'm sure you'll raise some eyebrows with stuff like how low Lost In Language is placed, or that O Titan Where Art Though finds itself all the way up at rank 4. But overall, the fandom overwhelmingly agrees on what the better and worse parts are. It's not like Amphibia where major aspects of the show have the fans militantly polarized.
    There's only one real exception to that, only a single episode that I've seen dramatic love-hate splits on: Them's the Breaks Kid. Personally, I think it's easily the worst episode in the show and pretty much a case study on how not to do backstory episodes (for examples of how to do them, check The Last Airbender's 'The Storm' or She-Ra's 'Lightspinner'), and I've heard people view it with even more vitriol than that, while for others its among their favorites.

    • @amesstarline5482
      @amesstarline5482 Před rokem +1

      (Warning, potential Season 3 Ep 1 spoilers)
      What keeps me from hating Them's The Breaks Kids is more as a parallel so Season 3 Episode 1, and by extension, both scenes of Luz's moms dealing with school in Season 1. Where Eda excelled but was also a troublemaker, Camila struggled socially and potentially academically.
      Neither agreed to conformity- Camila to sending Luz to the Box camp, Eda to the Coven System. Yet after dealing with the conformity, they escape to support themselves and later their family.
      I guess Thanks To Them is a better-woven Them's The Breaks.
      If we're talking unpopular opinions, Once Upon a Swap got me properly into the show, and the idea of possession of another's body does change from a harmless episode to a dramatic point in the latest episode. About how it can be exploited.

    4. Magic Part 2, aka Fights in this show
    Now the Owl house has 2 states to its animation. There is its standard state where animation is fluid but still somewhat rigid, looking good enough to bring out expressive characters without breaking the bank. Then there is hyper animation where it honestly feels like the amount of frames is doubled overall, however, this does not happen frequently. There are four moments in particular that stick out as having hyper animation in the 3 seasons so far. There is the Grom fight in "Enchanting Grom Fright," the Eda and Lillith battle in "Agony of a Witch," The dialogue and kiss between Luz and Amity in "Clouds on the Horizon" and there is the fight with Belos possessed Hunter in "Thanks to Them." Now I may be missing one or two, but these are what I remember. Out of these 4 the Grom fight is easily my favorite, the animation is creative and snappy and the fight itself is done in a very creative dance style. It serves as a resolution to the buildup of both the characters and as a visual spectacle that I could watch repeatedly. I have practically no complaints about this scene, but it works as an excellent comparison to the scene I really want to talk about, the Eda vs. Lillith battle. The first time I watched this scene, it was an exceptional visual masterpiece that conveyed the conflict in an energetic and powerful manner. Rewatching it again though I got the feelin it was a missed opportunity in some ways. It is no doubt the best animated portion of the entire show; the use of the magic system feels lacking though. Both Eda and Lillith have been built up as having access to all types of magic and being exceptionally strong at everything they can do and yet, they only really make use of spells that simply fire lasers or teleportation magic with Lillith using some sort of shield spell. This fight could have been the perfect opportunity for both characters to make use of their favorite styles of magic (styles that I may add are somewhat opposite as we know from season 2 that Eda much prefers magics like illusion or bard to Lillith's most used techniques) to have a fight showcasing every single part of this extremely creative and in depth magic system. It is still an excellent scene and a highlight of the entire show, being narratively and visually stunning, but this was essentially the final opportunity to show a witch make use of all types of magic in a fight and yet the spellmanship is exceptionally generic in nature. Honestly their fight in Covention despite it's lacking hyper animation is a more creative battle between these two characters as it provides a more unique arena that gives way to a variety of spells.

    2. Pacing between seasons
    Okay, this was my biggest criticism of the first season when initially watching the show. Most of the first season suffers from a pacing issue of sorts (in my opinion). Especially on the first handful of episodes the plots feel like they wanted to tell a slightly larger story than they had time for. This results in the climax and resolution of the episodes feeling rushed and somewhat tacked on. This is noticeable for me especially in "A Lying Witch and a Warden," "I was a Teenage Abomination," "Once Upon a Swap," and "The First Day," though this doesn't mean these were the only episodes I felt had this issue. It does smooth out as the series goes on but it really stuck out to me, so I wanted to mention it.
    Season 2's pace is honestly pretty good, maybe a minor hiccup here or there, but nothing awful.
    Season 3's pace is what worries me. Because Disney sucks, the show is left with only 3 44 minute episodes for a season 3 that wraps up the characters and conflicts. Now they did know ahead of time that they would have to deal with this, but that still left them with way too many ideas for where the characters should end up than they could realistically resolve. The two episodes released for season 3 have handled this pace well enough, as even though they felt fast paced, it was still coherent and logically made sense without feeling like characters were trying to escape conversations so that there would be time to fit in something else. What I am worried about is the final episode, because whatever they could not fit within the first two is likely going to be jammed into the third in an attempt to wrap up most loose ends. I just really hope the ending feels satisfying, relatively speaking, though I despise Disney for forcing an excellent show to conform to a tight deadline esque schedule.
