Here's how to achieve the proper hand positions for the shaft lean you need at impact.
Hey, Performance Golfers, Matt Walter here at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Today, I'm going to show you how to exit left, and it's not going to be rope-hooked with the cane off the stage. I'm talking about how you're going to get your golf club around your body to develop a great impact position.
The face-on view when we're hitting is sometimes deceiving in the sense of how we create shaft lean. Typically, where I see players shank it and they really get way off base is that they think that the shaft lean comes from a linear push with their hands to develop that look. So, they look at it on video, and they go, "Oh, my hands should be forward. I've turned my body," but the problem is, their hands are too far away from their body, and if they train in pushing their hands up towards the target line, you're more than likely going to shank it because what you're learning how to do is create a linear move to create shaft lean and that presents the hosel.
I want you to set up to the alignment stick. You're going to go just inside the alignment stick, and if I get the club back down to shaft-parallel, so let's say I made a full swing and I've come back down to here and I'll let my hands continue towards the target, you can see how the club face actually works out to the right. It's also open, so I could twist my hands, but it doesn't stop the fact that my club is working its way out to the golf ball, presenting itself into the hosel.
Scoot down a little bit. If I get to that same spot and I feel like my left hand moves closer to my left pocket, the club doesn't work out, and it squares itself up a lot easier than, if I try and push my hands forward, the club face is open and it's working its way out to the right. So, what we have to remember is the exit left.
Now, the first question out of this gate is, "Hey, pro, doesn't that mean I'm going to be coming over the top?" Wrong. If you remember, the golf club's traveling on a plane, or, you know, many planes, but for the most part, it's traveling around that circle. It goes back, out to the ball, and then it should go back again. The problem is, too many people try and go back, and then they go out to the ball, and then they try and keep going up towards the target.
If you watch any of the modern-era golfers, you will see that they don't exit up the line with their hands. What you'll see is, their hands go in.
Now, here's where it gets slightly difficult for the average Joe. So, we may not have enough hip rotation to carry all of that shaft lean around our body. So, if we had to imagine my hips are here, I have to create space with my hips in order to have room for my hands to exit. If my hips can't turn and they stop right here, well, there's not much room for an exit plan, so I have to release the club face a little bit.
The key important variable here is, is that when you start coming down, you're trying to hide those hands from the camera while the club head is staying out, and you hit these nice, soft, little pitch shots. So, then, once you're comfortable with it, you can then start to get into a more full-like golf swing and really feel, from here, about shaft-parallel on the downswing, your hands start to go around your body and produce a lot more consistent, stable, shaft-leaning impact. So, I hope this drill and this explanation of how to create shaft lean enlightens you on how you can now produce a tour-like impact when it matters the most at the ball. By far, one of the best explanations of "exit left" I've seen. Finally someone who understands it. Nice work, pro!
I don’t usually comment, but this video was my “Aha!” Moment. For those of us that have a significant in to out path, with the inevitable push or pull hook depending on what the face is doing at impact, this drill will be a game changer. If those hands are not way on their way towards the left pocket (for a right hand golfer) at the time of impact, there is no way the swing path will not be too in to out (yes, too much in to out club path does exist, just ask one of us that hook the ball). Hand path is NOT the same as club path, and that’s what this drill is intended to demonstrate. Works with any club, including (and I would argue especially) with the driver
This is a long post, but I guarantee it is worth it for those that have never experienced this lesson. Matt, by coincidence after 20+ years of playing this sport, I had this discovery at the range just a few weeks ago. You are the only one that has actually explained, partially, what my problem has been all my playing career, and I don't believe I'm alone, and I'll tell you quite honestly it is not something easy to conquer at all...even when you 'discover' your lesson...even when we hit a few great shots; because in my case I've had decades of bad movements ingrained in me. I have, all my life, been trying to get the club to 'square' at the target with my hands, and even my body in some weird way to help out. It has never really worked, but I've played some pretty good golf with what I've had...about 8 handicap average. But what that does is take away any chance of ever opening the hips properly...if I try to open the hips or get real shaft lean, it is 'manufactured', weak, and not an improvement...perhaps even an even worse mishit. Now, the 'discovery' or aha moment, whatever you call it, I call it a Singularity for me, is my hip turn, as you state, is key. But it is more complicated than that because there is INTENT behind everything in the swing...and my intent had NEVER EVER been to square the clubhead with my hip turn and at the same time...couple it with a HARD swing from the inside. When I started doing this it was AMAZING really, I can feel the Whip-like effect--sort of like snapping a whip...it has been as big for me as the first time I compressed a ball and went up much farther and better than me trying to scoop it. In addition to this is the realization that the target on my irons is well past the ball, and down and through. This is too long of a post...but I love your lesson, as you have clarified my thoughts even further. Sorry for the long post.
Thank you for the kind post! I appreciate your feedback and honesty! Fairways and Greens!
i find when i get it correct it seems so right, it's like my arms do nothing but i can feel them act correctly with no slashing but letting the pivot move the arms and club and nice shots.
As an IQ specialist I can say this guy is a bad ass high IQ golf coach. Everything he said was perfect. I’m saving this video and I made notes on my golf notes to never forget it. Must do stick drill. Here is my sequence ….bring club back with body and right hand, make rock skipping motion back to ball without right shoulder going closer to target line and try to hit a bit inside. Now tomorrow I’ll try to exit left with my hips.
Glad you enjoyed. Let us know how it goes!
Excellent video and explanation. The understanding of Golf Mechanics have changed dramatically thanks to technology. Many teachers are good golfers but they don´t know how to explain the mechanics of the impact and golf swing. Be aware. In this case, Lean is very good. I am working on this drill since August 2018 and it really helped me to improve consistency. If you are an average golfer, this drill will help you to hit the ball lower and more solid. Thanks to this drill, I shot a solid 69 yesterday (67 - handicap 2) from the black tees. I would highly recommend though, to work with a good golf teacher.
Looks like 4 years on and this is still terrific advice. I have a freind knocking hosel rockets regularly. 2 young pros haven't been able to fix it. I see him with shaft lean, hands tracing the target line. I'll video his swing but I'd be willing to bet a steak dinner that tnis video can help. Oh and, I'm going to make sure I practice this drill as well (we all het lazy over time). Thanks!
I have been working on forward lean for a while and was able to hit the irons well at times.. However, they come and go, there were times that I hit it solid and there were times that I shank a lot and no clue why and how. After watching your video, I did the drill as you suggested for a few days, my swing has improved so much. thank you very much.
This is a perfect explanation of a complex problem. As a guy who comes from the inside too hard, this has been a longtime issue. Thanks for the video.
One of the best videos for golf I’ve seen. This really explains a ton and I was one getting a lot of shanks from time to time and couldn’t figure out why. The shaft lean...the incorrect way was exact what I was doing and other instructors explained it wrong. I just came back from the range using this video and I had immediate results. I was hitting sooooo much better. I can swing around 110 with my driver and around 85-93 with my irons depending on which one so the power was there. I was missing pure contact and this solved it. One question...will this create a chicken wing by bringing the hands closer to the body during the down swing or at the impact position?
Absolute truth! I've been struggling with this for years and this is the first time anyone's explained why I shank and how to move through impact properly... Thanks!
That was probley the most informing and simplest lesson I every watched.
Thank you
You're welcome!
I’ve watched dozens of videos that discuss how to get shaft lean, and I never could replicate their instruction. I stumbled upon this video and was awestruck at how you conveyed this critical part of the golf swing so masterfully! Finally an answer to my shank and how to square the club face through rotation, and exit. Brilliant! Thanks.
the best instructor on youtube by far.
Absolutely brilliant, simple, explanation. No quick hacks, no clickbait, just honest advice.
As a PGA golf professional, I want to tell you that your explanation, demonstration, and wording, are all excellent. This should help golfers improve their swings. Well done.

Very good tip. I'm working hard on this right now. I'm going to try this tomorrow. I was working on this in my shorter shots today without knowing what it was. Awesome!
Matt I have only been golfing for a little over a year now and I really enjoy your instruction. It’s clear and I like the way you break your drills down. This video in particular has highlighted an issue I was having with my golf swing. By the way your putting instruction pit on a better path to sinking my putts.
Brilliant fun to try, I either overdraw or push the ball, bad bad exit. Tried this tonight, nice and slow, lovely straight shots with wonderful trajectory. Distance was less than normal but the feeling is Fantastic!!! I finally understand what it feels like to rotate my body, great work
I keep coming back Matt great lesson thanks again for your time and expertise!!🙏🏻
Agree 100% with Ken. Your visual description is easy to reproduce . Love it !
Thank you!
Totally agree, the best instructor, and the best drills on CZcams
This is by far the best golf tip I’ve ever tried, it improved my ball striking dramatically.
Best drill I’ve seen! Amazing results! Thank you!!!!!
just discovered this today in my net at home. i practise heaps off 16 but never get better. accidentally his some 7 irons 20 meters further than normal on my garmin r10 and noticed that as a LEFT HANDER i had finished low right. Kept trying this and made some awesome contact when finishing low right. tried a punch shot same technique, contact so good.
Ive been working on trying to get forward shaft lean for awhile now with very small improvements. This makes a lot of sense and feels fantastic. Going to try this out on the range tomorrow!
Wow, best explanation for "getting left". Been struggling w this for a long time and didnt know why till now.
Tried this on the course today. Was slightly sceptical as thinking I was always going to hook it left, my course is very tight and a slight hook and its goodnight... Well, it didn't work every time but when it did it was the best ball striking sound I've ever heard. This is something I'm going to work on as I need the confidence to hit this shot every time. My course does not have any practice facilities so have to practice this on the course. This is the best single piece of advice I've heard. Thankyou!
That's about as good as golf instruction can get. One of the most under-explained yet crucial points about the full swing IMHO, perfectly described.
Thank you!
Don't leave comments often but the way you described this just clicked for me. Thanks for the content.
This video covered everything that is wrong with my swing right now! Great Video and explanation!
I noticed in my back swing that my right arm was opening up causing me in my downswing to scoop the ball instead of having that shaft lean.
In all this video helped me a lot!
Matt thank you so much!
As someone who can have to much right side bend on way down, and get stuck underneath, this is gold for me!! This immediately turned around my ballstriking.
This is fantastic. I’m a chronic down the line puller and hoping to get out to try this tomorrow
I've watched alot of shaft lean videos and that was an excellent and clear explanation of an over looked piece of how to keep club moving after impact . Ala Justin Rose's pre shot routine movinf the hand low and left through impact
Thank you! Be sure to subscribe for more content!
Most excellent explanation I've ever seen/heard!!!!!
Excellent stuff, and really simple to visualize...
Thanks,
William
Matt, if there is a secret to good golf, this is it. Brilliant lesson. No one else I've ever seen has explained this in my experience. I have to add that on another channel a comparison was made with a good amateur player vs a professional and that when the club is parallel on the downswing, the amateur's hands are well behind the right leg--yet the Pro is already near his right knee. The lag isn't exactly less for the amateur, what it is though is what you explain (it took both of these lessons f, your and the other for me at least to understand) that the amateur is trying to glide, push, pull or whatever--the hands toward a target in a linear fashion; rather than RELEASE the club and CHANGE DIRECTIONS with the hands going left as the Pro does. As a side benefit, my chipping and pitching have improved because I'm no longer trying to move my hands across my body in any way; they go left. This move almost feels like the hands stop to me because my swing had been grooved for so long on following a line rather than a true release. 2c, for what it's worth from a 9 handicapper.
Great instruction just what I was looking for , been fighting a push fade this has worked like a dream .
Thank you 😁

I've seen a lot of video's on the golf swing A bad swing will never change unless you understand what the pro is saying. Your video did help me understand my path after contact . I added it into my swing thoughts it add extra 3 or 4 yards of carry and a higher flight. Thanks
Great tip Matt with the feeling of the hands moving closer on the turn.
Thank you!
If only I had understood this 20 odd years ago. This is the move I have been recently making and what a difference it makes. I have never heard a connection like this or it any shot in the way I do now. I just think I was afraid to ty this move, even though I had seen this demonstrated by others. Did any instructor, on any lesson ever show me this, or talked about how the hands work - NO thy did not. Everyone should be doing this. For the first time in my golfing life, I now feel progress in a way I could never have imagined.
That is awesome you are seeing improvement. Thank you for watching and keep improving!
I have fought this type shank for awhile now and this is the first explanation that I hope works
It will! Let us know if you have any questions!
I have always done this by accident and I always wondered why it felt so solid now I know thanks
Thanks awesome! Be sure to subscribe for more content!
Nice Clear explanation and demonstration
Awesome explanation. Can't wait to try this.
Fantastic explanation. Im guessing this will help my dynamic loft
An explanation that makes sense finally
Really good stuff. Love the focus on hands to the left. Too much I’ve focused on just trying to press my hands forward
Really good lesson Matt; thanks!!!
this is the best explanation of how to actually get this move. thnx so much.
steve perry if you see as many front views of pro golfers hitting the ball you will see how good this explanation is.
Good luck with your golf / handicap after the lockdown.
You're a gifted teacher.
Great video thanks for sharing has helped tremendously
This has helped me so much, thank you so much for explaining so simply, but just wanted to add another problem I have , this drill and body rotation go hand in hand, if you don’t rotate enough you’re gonna block it right a lot!!! Thanks again
This is great I’m going to try it. I’ve been hitting my irons far too high and it’s costing me distance....I’ve taken video of my swing and I can see my shaft means back at impact....anytime I’ve tried to create forward lean myself, I start shanking. I’ll definitely give this drill a try
Exactly! Much sympathy here. Hope it works out.
i flip and this has helped me to understand and to practice it out, thank you for insight and tips 5 ⭐️
Great lesson. I would always wonder why my warm up pitch shots with a slightly open stance would have perfect impact but my full swing would tend to introduce the “shanks”. The hands exiting left is a great idea and needs to be felt and seen with video. Off to the range!!!!!!
Very well done. Thank you!
Excellent...the best...makes total sense!
Superb explanation.
What i realized is that sending my hands out&away is why I get off balance with a fast swing…I’m sending my Center of Gravity away from me, not stable. Quite enlightening and not sure I ever understood this before! Thanks!
I really learned a lot from your video thanks. Does this apply to hitting driver too?
It took me a long time and a long period of inconsistent ball striking to finally understand turning the corner. I wish I would have seen this video ages ago.
But at least you're getting to use it now!
Incredibly good video
Excellent video!
Thank you!
The exit left cane joke was good.
Superb video!
Keeping it simple…well done.
I love the idea of pulling my left foot back….Trying it out tomorrow
Big thanks
Tried rib breaker today. Was definitely using an awkward hand position to prevent hitting myself with the stick. Guess I’ll have to keep working at it
I’ve been a periodic shanker for 40+- years. I recently watched Mike Wydra in a “scratch to scratch” video series. His bowed left wrist, statue on a turn table video has been a great eye opener for me but sure enough a shank snuck in there. These little punch shots he demonstrates work great but damn just as you demonstrated shank. Thanks for the explanation I’ll give it a try and report back.
Did this fix your shank issue? I have the same issue and I believe this video is addressing my problem. Can't wait to get out on the range this afternoon!
EXCELLENT video
I just subscribed. Thank You.
Freaking great lesson 👍
Tried it, it works! My ball flight is lower and more penetrating Thanks.
Just excellent
Best video of cure my Gipping my club..
Nice tips Pro, thumbs up
great video!!
One more question for you Matt: to get the proper rotation of the body on the downswing, is it better to think of the hands moving around the body or the right shoulder moving down and under?
I know this will cure my push shot( my nemesis) and occasional shank shots. So grateful thanks, Matt.
Glad to help! Let us know how it goes!
Hitting ball consistently straighter! Thanks Matt
Good work fella
thank you so very much. This makes sense.
You're welcome! Be sure to subscribe for more content!
Thanks dude
Brilliant 🤩
I have been working so hard on this but whenever I go full speed, I have very little shaft lean. I’m trying so hard. I’m trying to figure out why but I keep reverting! What would you tell me to help??
I’m figuring I practice with half shots only for a week at least, then go slow. I just can’t get the club and arms to be straight after impact for very long. But I do like this video and will work on this “thought” of hiding my hands. Thank you!
Good stuff
Does the rib breaker drill produce a feel that can be used with Driver?
I tried this and from waist height shot I hit perfect lil punch draws. When I did it from the top I hit weak cuts. how do I work down properly. this move puts me over plane starting down. thanks!
More detail on this theme at Steve Johnston PGA, his Eureka swing setup is great.
light bulb moment ,I feel like my left hand moves closer to my left pocket, the club doesn't work out, and it squares itself up a lot easier. one of the best visual description. works for me . thanks
You're welcome!
When I do this type of swing, my ball flight is too low. How do you do this exit left and make the ball still go as high as normal?
Hey Matt, I notice that at impact, your shoulders are basically level at impact which looked good and you hit the ball sweet. However what confuses me is that a lot of other instructors on here tell you to have the spine and shoulder tilted at impact, for example like Tommy Fleetwood? Related to this possibly, should the sternum be ahead of the ball at impact with your irons? Cheers from the UK
Can I still hit a draw using this technique?? Thanks again for your time and expertise!🙏🏻
no one explains this...great lesson
my coach was telling me to hit it low and finish to the left :D basically this theory summed up in noob terms lol
Same here, except never really explained it just said “finish left” over and over, I was very confused thinking that was the opposite of what I was trying to do, this makes since.
This is so damn good
Would you do this with a 2 plain swing?
