- We do not post videos often with our 10x15 Chandler & Price Gordon-style jobbing press, but when we do film, we try to record much of the process. For this press run, Howard is using black rubber base ink to print a large photo engraving of himself and his favorite letterpress saying, “Mind your p’s & q’s.”
In this video, Howard shows inking of the press and printing copies recorded from different angles. There were 125 copies printed in this press run and a dab of ink was added about every 35-40 copies. These autographed prints are now available in our museum store and website.
For those wondering, this is the standard way to apply ink to make sure an even layer of ink is on the ink disk and rollers. Once an even layer is established, then the form is placed on the bed of the printing press and printing can commence. This printing press was made in 1902 and the counter rotating disk has been disabled.

Please put Howard on the payroll. His service and dedication to the museum need to be recognized. The Sacramento History Museum is now World famous because of Jared & Howard. That little print shop is a testament to “living history.”
Howard’s service and dedication to the Sacramento History Museum is definitely recognized! He even received an award recently from the City of Sacramento. Howard has been a volunteer for almost 25 years and he started volunteering after he retired. He doesn’t want to be paid. He volunteers a few weekday mornings a week.
25 years of volunteering without pay should be recognized with something of value for Howard to pass on to his family. I know you younger people with your extensive education and multiple college degrees don’t understand that concept. However, if I was in charge Howard would be receiving something along the lines of a gold Rolex with the enormous proceeds received from his work building up the social media platforms.
We understand very well that Howard donates his time to the Sacramento History Museum in his retirement. I think most people don’t realize that most of the people who are are at museums/historic sites are volunteers.
We always make sure Howard knows how much we are thankful for his time. He always receives recognition at our volunteer appreciation events along with all our our other dedicated volunteers.
We wish we were receiving “enormous proceeds” but the amount we get from videos, mostly donations from viewers, goes to support our school scholarship fund so we can help offset school program fees for low income schools to visit our museum. We just like making videos and sharing history.

@@bbbrolexput your $ where your mouth is then, tough guy. Why don’t you donate a Rolex for Howie?
In the heart of Sacramento, where histories are told,
Stands a museum, majestic and bold.
Its walls whisper tales from the days of yore,
A treasure of memories, myths, and folklore.
Therein lies a press, aged and grand,
A relic of craft from a bygone land.
Inked with stories, it stands with grace,
An artifact of time, in its rightful place.
At this press, there's a worker named Howard,
Whose passion for printing is never soured.
With each press and turn, his heart does sing,
For in this old machine, he finds his wings.
Howard's prints are more than mere art,
They're echoes of history, playing their part.
With each roll of ink and each paper's embrace,
He captures the essence of time and space.
From the Gold Rush tales to the river's flow,
Howard's prints let the past's spirit show.
Each piece a story, a memory reborn,
A slice of Sacramento, in ink is worn.
So here's to the museum, its press, and its lore,
To Howard, whose prints we so adore.
In the heart of the city, their stories they share,
A testament of time, crafted with care.

I like your poem. It would be a nice addition to their shop.

@@SacramentoHistoryMuseum Yhank you, I've been working on it as I draw inspiration from your videos and passion for printing. What part did you like most
@louellagreen8365 I would love to see it printed and posted on a wall! Obviously not stamped as that is too long a poem haha.
I didnt realize 5 mins had pass by. Watching him work is relaxing 😅
I’m the proud owner of one of these! Signed by Howard himself. :)
I have one of these coming in the mail soon. Thank you all for posting , from one pressman to another.
The spreading of the ink is so satisfying to watch
It's always amazing to me how little ink it actually takes to cover the plate and make so many prints.
I love watching those rollers. So smooth. And it looks like it has a counter to keep track of how many prints it’s made.
What a fantastic piece of engineering
Howard is so loved by so many people❤ his dedication and knowledge are inspiring, hes such a humble kind person. Big love to all of yall from Westmoreland Tennessee❤❤❤ if there was a history meusum in my town I'd definitely volunteer there
На это можно смотреть часами! Успокаивает лучше любого психолога. Спасибо за ваши видео!
it confuses me every time how far such a seemingly small amount of ink can go
What a beautiful designed machine.

I ran one of these in my dad's garage doing die cutting in 1977 good. Times
This job is so exciting i wish i could work like this ❤
Ok so go in the 1800s 😂
just curious on why the museum chose to disable the counter rotation disks or did the museum get it configured like this
the sounds this press makes while being operated is just a beautiful mechanical symphony i could listen for hours
This press was donated in this condition. The counter rotating disk has been disabled for over 35 years and works perfectly fine!
@@SacramentoHistoryMuseum cant wait to come and see it this spring in person :)
Parabéns 👏👏👏🇧🇷
Just wondering can u use the ink multiple times with different prints
I spent many hours in the 60's. Handfeeding Arab and Whorfdale printing presses.
Who designs the electrotypes? I am curious if something had to be printed in late 1880s, it must had been a long process to create the woodcuts.
Is there a specific name for this type of Press that uses the Circular plate to load the ink?, thank you.
cool
It might take space and a bit long to start but it still print faster than the modern printers
Maintenance on this press?
Someone needs to make a cut of Jared saying "Press the red button, Howard".
More like mind your fingers and toes! :P
Why to slow?? Im also an operator of that kind of machine.. and it has a dynamo
How old is Howard??

How do you have 2 million subscribers but low views?
Our subscribers and viewers are mainly through the Shorts feed. We have over 800 million views on our videos.
Howard always be skipping leg day.
that's awesome, i just got ours a little bit ago. Thanks howard! I was wondering though, Who does the maintenance and repairs on the presses when things break?
We do routine maintenance but nothing breaks when we take great care of our equipment.
