  • This is a simple guide on how you can get better performance and ease of use out of your new Eq6-R pro. My hope is it helps people with lighter set ups get proper balance. And maybe even better overall tracking. The mount is amazing and this trick will make it even better.
    Big shout out to Skywatcher who makes the mount and to a channel called Explore Learn share for bringing this trick to You tube.

    Nice Joe! Another really easy improvement I made with my EQ6-R was cleaning and re-greasing the clutches. I notice a little play. You can just remove the clutch knobs with a screwdriver, take the clutch assemblies out and clean / re-grease (use a tiny amount of synthetic lubricant like super lube) and put back together. Clear skies, Nico

    Joe, Great video. My mount was very stiff as well after it came back from a repair. The dec adjustment was easy. Moving the black smooth 'nut' when adjusting the RA proved to be a problem for me as well. I put a piece of gaffer's tape around the smooth surface and that allowed the rubber belt wrench to grip. Any residue from the tape was removed with a quick wipe with acetone on the cloth. I also found taking off the screw to adjust the angle of the mount in the back out gave me more room to get a better grip on the black 'nut'.

    Thank you Joe - I was able to do this with mine, having been frustrated with the stiction in the mount out of the box. For people watching, this is as easy as Joe shows - just follow him carefully step by step, and be aware that when doing the black RA ring: You may need to back the grub screws out quite a way, and the ring may be very tight out of the factory - mine was. Thanks again!

    Wow, together with another video on how to fix clutch slippage, this video was extremely helpful! While applying these instructions, I ran into 2 problems: The polar scope would not move, it was in very tight. Eventually I got my rubber belt wrench out and it did come out with it. Next, much bigger problem was, that this round and smooth nut sitting behind the polar scope would not turn, even with the application of a large belt wrench. I could also feel, that it was turned very tight, the rotation movement was really hard going. Eventually I discovered, that the 2 holes at the front of this round nut were for the use of a pin wrench! I did not have one, so I made my own from several layers of plywood, inserting the backside of 3.5mm drills as pins, set 52mm apart. And with some concentrated effort, it did turn eventually! I'm so impressed with how easy all movements of my mount are now! Thank you!

      No problem bud. The first time I did this was with a pin wrench. But I kinda figured most wouldn't have one. So I was trying to come up with something for basic tools laying around the house. But the guy who showed me this also used a couple screws that fit in just right with a screwdriver between them. Glad the video helped out a little at least lol. And really happy to hear the mount has better friction now.

    My EQ6-R Pro was reaaaally tight in RA when I got it, so much so that it was hard to find good balance, but I have a vey light setup on it so guiding hasn't been all that bad the past year I've used the mount. Finally got around to do this and following your very clear instructions, it was not difficult at all. It so much looser in RA after this adjustment which will make it a lot easier to find the correct balance. Thank you for this. Once these clouds disappear, I'll see how my guiding is.

  • @JoMoJack
    @JoMoJack Před 2 lety +3

    I've just gone to the shop to confirm that this works on the HEQ5 Pro as well. The only slight difference is that the ring that holds the polar scope cap on is black in color on the HEQ5, and the grub screws that hold it in place are actually on the face, not radially placed. Loosening those two screws, then using a pin wrench (or two hex keys and a screwdriver) you can loosen the polar scope cap retaining ring. After that is removed, the calendar ring (green protractor) can be removed to expose the whole of the tension nut. The tension nut only had 3 grub screws on the HEQ5, rather than the 4 on the EQ6-R.
    I did notice that when adjusting the RA axis tension nut, I could leave a good amount of tension (more than hand-tight) and the RA axis was much more free to rotate. As these tension nuts are meant to keep axial runout from the system, I decided to leave it more than hand-tight to reduce the chance of axial runout, but that is a "your mileage may very" kind of situation.
    Great video!

    I went a bit further... because I could :) I tore the head down to the main bearings and found that the grease was contaminated. Did a cleaning on the bearings... replaced one ( dropped one) re-greased with super-lube and re-assembled. Made all the difference in the world for balancing and guiding. The black piece on the RA is referred to as a 'compression nut' (obvious reasons). The two holes that don't have threads are used to loosen/tighten the nut with a tool. I used a couple of appropriate sized cap screws and a piece of bar stock for leverage to do the deed. In most cases I think that your process is more than sufficient to correct for factory assembly missteps and it is really easy. Clear Skies

The cool thing was is that the thrift store had exactly three of them which is perfect for my mount. And man does it make it easy while you're at home making adjustments and stuff. And if you set up somewhere where there's hard concrete you could even use it set up like that. But I don't really recommend it because bumping it would move it pretty easily lol.

    • @astroadventures3559
      @astroadventures3559  Před rokem +4

      I've tested and had a bunch of people test this method and haven't had anyone complain of any play introduction. But not to say it can't happen. Just that all of the feedback has been positive. And I'm sure if you back it off to much you could absolutely add some slack to it. But it's as simple as using the same method to tighten it a little to take the play back out if you upgrade to a bigger rig.
      I usually run off results and not speculation. And all of the test I've done and people are reporting on this video are positive results. So if you find something different after trying it, please feel free to share those results. Maybe in a video so we can see your findings though.

    I'm getting an EQ6-R. When reinstalling the polar scope, will it need to be realigned to the RA? Thanks for the easy way to fix the mount.

    I think you will find that the 2 holes on the face of the black nut are for a 2 prong c spanner for adjusting it😎

    Great video!! My problem is I’m still having trouble unscrewing the black RA dial after turning the 4 grub screws at least 4 full turns. Using a strap wrench still won’t loosen it. Suggestions?

    • @astroadventures3559
      @astroadventures3559  Před rokem +1

      We'll I would maybe back the grubs out a little bit more and then use either a big pair of channel locks or the wrench that was actually made for it has two little nubs that go in the holes In The front of the black dial. It's called a pin wrench. That should do the trick. They really over tighten those things. And that's why we have the problem with the stickiness. Hope this helped a little at least. Good luck l, and please let me know if it still isn't working😊

    Just a comment: in mechanical systems, backlash can actually improve accuracy. In battle tanks, the weight of the main armament and the loading mechanism/breech behind it, enclosed inside the turret, there is always a bit of backlash. When aiming the main armament, we always finished our 'lay' in depression, meaning that we would elevate the gun slightly between firing the large rounds, and then depress the gun until it was back to our aiming point. This relied on mechanical backlash. Our results were excellent, and it improved our accuracy. I believe that the same principles can be used on telescope mounts. Letting the scope be slightly unbalanced, say to the tune of about three or four ounces, will ensure that the scope moves at the same rate on either side of the declination or RA scale. When it goes over the top, it will tilt the other way the distance of the mesh gap, but stay there, just as it did on the other side of TDC for the coordinates being used.

  • @logieberra
    @logieberra Před 2 lety

    Yes but, did you take before and after guide or PE data to compare? Feel/friction by hand and measured data/error are two different things!

      @astroadventures3559  Před 2 lety

      If you read through the comments you'll see where a few different people definitely did and definitely had positive results. I was just trying to make a simple guide without getting too technical. Something that I would have been able to follow when I started. I checked around with a bunch of the pros including someone that works up at skywatcher. And found that this is a proven method that works great for the eq6r pro. Then I made the video. Thank you for stopping to check it out.

      Make sure the clutch is locked and look up a tool called a pin wrench. It has 2 pins on a pliers looking tool. That's the correct tool. Also make sure you didn't strip the Allen screws and the are actually backing out enough. Let me know what happens.

    Thank you . Can you recommend a battery to run this mount. Ugh! Someone told me a Celestron power tank would work . Nope the plug is different. Why in the Haeckel do they not supply a power supply when you give them over $2,000????

    • @astroadventures3559
      @astroadventures3559  Před rokem

      Man I struggled with that as well. I just wanted a simple answer, and everything was confusing trying to find a good power source. But if you go to Amazon they have a good power plug for it. It takes the car lighter plug on one side and wall🔌 for the other side. Then I used a power converter that you can buy at Walmart. It does jump starting as well. Witch is good because I use a AC/DC converter for my computer and everything else. That one hooks up to my truck battery and I screwed it down to the top of my air cleaner. But you don't want to leave your truck running the whole time you're out there. So that's why it's nice to have the jump/ converter to run some of the other stuff.

      Cool yes I just bought both of those. I think the Pegasus cord with work with the Celestron battery. I also found an A/C adapter for the asiair plus for $8.95 (some of these astral sites want $25-$40 for the same A/C adapter! Of course lots of these accessories and other stuff are backordered for a couple weeks to a month. Bought it from the ZWO ASI site

      I was surprised at how much of an improvement it was as well. With my light set up, I couldn't even get the balance right. And you know how it is. It's almost impossible to get everything perfect every time. So if you can eliminate one more problem, it one less to deal with towards the end result. Thanks for checking it out. I will have a new one out in the next couple weeks. Just shorts until then.

    I did this precidure and now it is more difficult if not impossible to balance the scope I wonder if there is a reason this not done at the factory.

      I've not seen anyone have that experience. If you read through the comments on the video you will see how many people it worked for. I wonder if maybe you made it a little to lose. I'm sorry you had a bad experience. But from what I understand, it's a normal adjustment that is made by most who buy this mount.
      I really hope you get it figured out. Best of luck.🤞

    • @crateer
      @crateer Před 6 měsíci

      Of course it will be harder as you will then need to find perfect balance!
      Prior to this, finding true balance is almost Impossible due to how tight everything is, so it feels "easier"

      It pushed my tracking up to about 3 and 1/2 4 minute exposures with that light setup. Before I was running two and a half to three minutes sometimes a little bit more depending on the target. So it's definitely a worthwhile adjustment to make. In a fairly easy one. I definitely didn't want to open my mouth up with his new as it is.

      @@astroadventures3559 I did the same but cause a little damage to black ring. Goddammid they force that thing in there real good. I stick 2 screws on that front faceing holes and turn that thing with metal bar. Now it turns smootly and I just track 300 second with skywatcher matsutov newt 190 and I don't care about that damaged paint job.
