Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro REVIEW ➠astrobackyard.com/sky-watcher...
With previous experience using an HEQ5 Pro SynScan - the EQ6-R was the next logical step forward for my astrophotography adventures in the backyard.
I hope you enjoy the images I take using BOTH mounts in 1 night:)

Trevor, you deserve every bit of good fortune coming your way. This mount is well deserved for the service you provide to us.
I really appreciate the Skyrim background music 👌🏾
Your review has swung the EQ6R-Pro for me. Was a major contender for my new mount. It will be mine, thanks man.
A wonderful mount indeed! I've had mine since late January and love it. Using the polar scope can usually get you within a few minutes of perfect polar alignment. Plate solving from there can get you to less than 30 arc sec of perfect polar alignment. I've taken 600s subs guided with this mount , and the mount is a beast for sure.
I know this isn't a new video. And I have watched it several times, but. As a person who has never previously owned an EQ mount of any kind, what is needed is a video that shows the setup. The tripod setup and which way the legs need to point. The leveling. The hands on, up close moving of the adjustment knobs so that we see how it's handled. The home positions. All that.
"Amateur Astronomy & Stormchasing" did a video on how to 1, 2 and 3 star align a HEQ5 synscan mount, that's exactly what you want
Totally agree.. Been using the EQ6-R for almost a year. An absolutely incredible mount capable of holding quite a payload as well. I have the SkyWatcher Quattro 250 (10") Astrograph and the EQ6-R handles it fine. As for Polar Alignment, I ran a test after doing an accurate (not quicky) polar alignment by hooking a guide scope (60mm) with ZWO ASI 120 SS to PHD2 but did not attach to the ST4 port. I wanted to see just how accurate the belt drive system would be. Selected a guide star in PHD2 (don't recall what object I was pointed at). The point being that without being plugged into the ST4 port, the guide star did not move from the crosshairs for 15 minutes. That was good enough for me to know this mount is incredible. I done multiple minute 1000mm (Quattro) imaging unguided and had no star trails. This doesn't mean you shouldn't guide on long focal length, but does mean the corrections, if any, will be minor.. Great video!!
Great mount review. Also loved the music from Skyrim and Mass Effect. Your videos always help remind me to slow down and appreciate the basics - thanks for that and keep it going!
Just started stargazing and getting into Astrophotography and you have been truly inspirational and a huge help, thank you so much for doing all this 👍🏻
That eastern veil nebula capture is dope!
Always great to see the passion for the hobby come through. You definitely have the workflow down, but I love the drama on the meridian flip!
Wow, very nice mount! The images were spectacular, very well done, thanks for sharing and wishing you many successful nights of imaging with your new mount!
The images were spectacular? I wasn't impressed with the image of the Andromeda image at all, but that maybe because I'm so used to seeing enhanced images that incorporate other wavelengths of light to produce. Here we're only seeing visible wavelengths.
Hi Trevor. At last something about some of the kit I am also using. Your channel is awesome. Thank you. Ive been watching your channel with anticipation since you posted the Esprit 100 vid and wanted more info regarding that scope. Then I noticed you using ZWO camera and then comes along the EQ6-R mount! After one year of research I entered into AP green in January with an Esprit 80 on an EQ6-R mount with ZWO MC120-S camera and scope for guiding and imaging with a T6s(760D). Everything I have learnt about AP has been on CZcams and forums. Everything I have learnt about my Kit has been from the instruction manuals, and trial and error since I can find very little in reviews other than manufacturer bias. Through all of that and with limited AP knowledge I think I can say truthfully that Skywatcher gear is bloody awesome and it has been extremely satisfying imaging different DSOs as they track across the sky with the seasons. In this vid you mentioned the power requirements for the mount. I purchased a 20amp 12v regulated transformer to run the mount and dew control but am hesitant about running the mount on it. would it be safe? What is your set-up? perhaps you could do a video on mount power?? Anyway I've rattled on long enough. Your videos are very informative and give me a self confirmation that the gear I purchased was the right choice. Thanks again - Dion
I just want to thank you for these Videos im new in this hobby and im having alot of questions and am getting answer to most of them from watching your videos.
Just wanted to say that your videos is great and keep up the great work that your doing it really brighten my day watching em.
Hey man I know this is a old video. But after 8 moths of wait g my EQ6 R pro is finally here!!! Dude there is three times I remember being this happy, both my kids being born and my wife saying yes to a man hopelessly in love on one knee. Man I can't wait to join the ranks of AP loving nerds😊😜
Awesome job as always keep up the good work and enjoy that new mount
Great video as always trevor. I have also the Esprit 100. Love it. It's a great scope. Always love your videos with it.
Trevor, you hooked me again - less than 12 months into this astrophotography addiction, and now look what you've done! Have a wonderful performing AVX but this video has driven me to consider the EQ6-R Pro (sale priced at $1,345). Will be topping the mount with a William Optics Z81 or my Hyperstar Celestron SE8 - will hopefully have some extra payload capacity for what I'm sure will be another aperture envy moment in the future.
thunderous applause from the audience!!!.... brillant video amazing results of your nights work i paused at the end for a long time on both shots great detail ..... thank you
cheers

Hi Trevor! Amazing shots! Can't wait to get some filters so I can produce that kind of quality with my rig. So I have this mount and initially had issues where my scope would almost hit the tripod. If you look on page 3 Fig 1.2b in the manual you will see where the dowel is. I found that switching the dowel so that it is aligned with a single leg of the tripod, and not between the other two legs, has helped in preventing any issues with the scope hitting the tripod. It's made life so much easier. Hope this helps! Clear skies.
Great video!!! This one was one my absolute favorites. I can't wait to get into this hobby. I have learned so much from you and your website already. I love the e-mails too. Keep up the great work! Are there more astro festivals you'll be attending?
Great stuff, Trevor! The EQ-6R Pro is on my wish list. Love the Celestial Chart on your garage wall, I have the same one on my wall.
Toys toys toys... I’m happy for you man, like always great videos, keep enjoying your mount.
👏🏽🥳
Bortle class 8, wow! I would never have guessed that from your images, I’m fairly lucky I guess as the skies above where I live are class 3. Another great video Trevor, look forward to more with your new mount.
Dog is asking if your wife knows how much you are spending.
lol.
Hayley is asking where her new man is.
He obviously skipped the Xbox one and PS4 so that would have cash for this :p
The biggest fear for all astrophotographers? If you pass on (hopefully not of course), you're wife might sell all your gear for what you told her you paid for them!
I guess Im randomly asking but does anybody know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly lost the password. I would love any assistance you can offer me!
I just gifted myself with one of these mounts yesterday. Great videos, btw. Keep em coming!
Enjoyed watching both the targets. Excellent images
Couple of great shots, thanks Trevor for another video!!
That's a sweet setup, very nice, good luck with it Trevor
Nice one Trevor - am just waiting for my SkyW HEQ-5 Pro to arrive - am inspired by your stuff. Keep 'em coming.
These videos literally blow my mind... Keep up the great work!
Literally?
Congrats on the new hardware. No need to apologize for candid enthusiasm. That’s why we’re here!
The hockey sticks in your garage compelled me to share that last week I had clear skies as I was headed out for a beer league game. I set out my 110 ED rig in record time so I could shoot while I was away. It worked out quite nicely. Collected 2 hrs on The Wizard. Your Wizard processing video came in handy that night. I owe you a beer!
Such a great mount for the price! Great final images!
Thank you for all of the videos! Over the last 3yrs I stuck with the Celestron 6se setup with the Nexstar se on a homemade wedge. I feel inspired to go to the next level.
Wow that Veil shot is great- Trevor your videos are largely responsible for getting me into astrophotography. 2-3 months in and I'm still enjoying the learning curve.
Awesome mount and great video,... Thanks, Pal.
Love your videos. Amazing job always.
Very nice shots for Bortle 8. I live in Bortle 8-9 myself and it's tough getting good views, but I live across the street from 2 shopping centers and an all night gas station.
Fantastic video as usual Trevor! Your videos are the reason I started doing astrophotography, and it's fantastic to see your channel keep growing. Keep up the great work!
edit: I just found out we have the same last name! Always fun to find another Jones in places you least expect it lol
Nice! The extra payload over my NEQ6 and also the belt drive is very nice. Also the screw in power cord sounds good!
I picked up the HEQ5 Pro 2 weeks ago. Love it! Used my Canon 5D mkii with a Canon 100-400mm at 350mm. Polemaster and Backyard EOS makes it so easy to set and walk away. It's so much fun when it all works the way its supposed to lol. Picked up the Orion CF 80ED last week. Getting some nice stuff with it as well. Enjoy the mount Trevor, the EQ6-R is an excellent piece of gear...came close to getting that one myself. Cheers from Carstairs AB.
After hearing your comment about the EQ6-R power requirements, I contacted Sky-Watcher. I quoted your comment and much to my surprise, Kevin replied to my query directly. He stated the EQ6-R requires more current compared to the EQ5. He also stated the Sky-Watcher supplied cable has an internal fuse to protect against surges.
This mount requires nothing more than typical motor control circuits. Simply provide 11 to 16v DC with a clean supply, capable of 4 to 5 amp so the motors don't stall.
I'm getting the same mount for Christmas as an upgrade to my EQ5 go-to.😁
Yes I have the same mount for an Esprit 120 and it's just perfect. But thanks so much for making me discover Aljosha Konstanty (there is a typo in your description)
Yeah I was going to go out that night but here in Gettysburg it got too cloudy around 2am. Love when you get new equipment your like me a kid in a candy store, love the videos keep them coming.
That eastern Veil was amzing ! I think I`ll order the EQ6r in the next days or so. At the moment I'm working with my NEQ 5 pro.
That mount looks to be a beast. Thought I saw you grimacing in the beginning when you were carrying it outside. Best of luck with it.
Excellent stuff! Thank you.
You looked so confident talkin bout that nebula...😉🤣....got me way out there....🤔😜
Got one myself this year... I'm really looking forward to any tricks you come up with.
Another great video Dovahkiin.
Awesome video as always sir
Awesomely awesome captures....
Astro dog in the yard guarding your new mount, Good Dog!
I can't wait to get this mount! 😃😃
Hahaha at 3:13 is that the Mass Effect Map theme music??? And that skyrim gameplay haha great stuff!
I own this mount and it is all because of this video ;>) Works like a dream and it is the best mount I've ever purchased.
You can attach those camera , st4 cables (etc) to the mount using something like adhesive velcro or wire twist ties.
You will minimize vibration, weight, flexure, guiding errors and the camera getting out of focus.
I used to hang them to the no moving parts of the mounts head all the way down to the legs.
of course, you want to allow some slack for the DEC and RA movements.
Great video . Great mount from SkyWatcher.
Glad to see Rudy getting involved like Luna does :D ....debating getting one of these mounts myself.
My EQ6-r pro arrives tomorrow :D
Thanks for the nice video! I got the same mount and also imaging from a light polluted area with a OSC ccd. Do you use the STC Astro Duo narrowband filter? Keep up the great vids Trevor!
Thats a wonderful equipment
Gongrats
My favourite astrophotography youtube channel! Please try to post a video on post processing.
Just got EQ6-R pro as my first equatorial mount to replace my current Star Adventurer, and I love it !!!!! Thanks for recommendation !!!!!!!
Me and my dad just bought the ioptron Cem 25p, now im waiting until it got shipped (of course im outside collecting data with my skywatcher star adventurer and my dslr with a 200mm lens on like im used to😉). I had a row of 7 weeks straight clear skies at the weekends, thats incredible for Germany at this time of the year.
Great Trevor!
I am eyeing the EQ6-R as well, but to hold a 10" Dobson!
Awesomeness bro very good 🔭
Thank you for sharing!
Awesome video Trevor, unfortunately I'm clouded out where I am in the UK at present :-(
Excellent video Trevor thanks. I know the CEM60 was probably only a loan while this one is acquired with your own money? If money had been no object, would you have kept the CEM60 over the EQ6? Thanks.
i buy recently this little monster , and i really love it
Damn m31 looks way better and impressive than I expected it! Awesome video as usual Trevor :D
Bro.... When you stared at the dog when he barked I lost it 😂 😂
Your videos are amazing.
Ha! You got a Rav4! looks to be the same model year that I own too!
Beautiful
Dude space is fascinating, I just inherited an old brass telescope from my grandparents and have been checking out the night sky. I’m hoping to take it out to the country sometime out of the way of the cities light pollution.
It’s so old I can’t attach a camera to it but it would be so cool to be able to take pictures!
I came really close to buying that mount. I loved the handle. I ended up getting thr Losmandy G11g
Both are great mounts. I still love my NEQ6 and will never part with it. Congratulations
Thanks for another great and informative video! You should convince them to send you an EQ8-Rh for review next! 😁
I have that mount. I like it a lot. I've ditched the handcontroller (just use EQdirect and EQMOD) and plate solving with APT. I also use the extender bar so I can get away with only one weight. I presume this puts less strain on the mount.
8:43 Are you made of wood trevor! 😂
hahaha that was a strange place to knock on :D
I like this mount. Not the latest but tried and true. Planning to order one next week.
Awesome Video man and what a beast of a mount. Im gonna have another go at a bit of astrophotography thinking heq5 or this mount. Not sure here in the uk theres about a £500 price difference between the 2 but eq6r would be more future proof if i want to go larger than my SW ED80.
FINALLY getting one of these, keeping my Skyguider Pro for the wide angles though.
Great video as always Trevor, thank you. Could you tell me more about the dual narrow band filter please? I have searched for one to no avail. It doesn't seem to be available in the UK! Much appreciate any info!
Can you do a video on your recommendations for someone just starting in Astrophotography. Telescopes, mounts, or even maybe a bundle that someone could use to get started thanks keep the videos coming.
Some Beautiful day i'll replace my sky watcher Star adventurer and my 70-200f4 with a nice scope and mount. Until them i'll enjoy each and every of your Video 😄. Keep going. Love your Videos! Clear Skies everyone!
Two rigs, exciting stuff
I just ordered this mount. Going to pair it with a 10" Orion astrograph. Wanted The Celestron CGX at first for its payload capabilities, but its been out of stock everywhere. I hope this mount has what it takes to support a really big scope.
Nice mount. Thanks for explaining the gain settings. It would helpful to know the offset you are using with your image capture.
I love your CZcams channel. The production value is very high and informative. I have a quick question. How easy is it to move? I live in an apartment complex and have to cart everything several hundred feet to a roof top deck. I'm currently using the skywatcher az-gti which is light but not so great for astrophotography.
I splurged on a Losmandy GM811 but your Skywatcher looks a lot better than what they previously made
Hey Trevor - great vid as always.....I'm super interested in knowing whether the EQ-6R Pro is necessary for the Esprit 100 ED. Reasion being, I'm looking for the best mount for the Esprit 100 ED but something portable (I have to lug it up 48 stairs each time I use it!!). Would your HEQ-5 Pro be up to the task? I have a typical setup: scope / guidescope / camera, imaging camera and filterwheeel. Many thanks in advance :)
Wow fantastic.
great video thx !!!
great choice of game, great choice of scope, great choice of mount. We're twins!
Wow!
Great video, funny how you used the wise tree music
Gorgeous images, Trevor! Many thanks for yet another highly-anticipated video of yours, from here in Taiwan.
can you do a video with the setup of your new telescope? What is the price for the whole rig?
