XYY syndrome is a genetic condition in which a male has an extra Y chromosome.
    Symptoms are usually few.
They may include being taller than average, acne, and an increased risk of learning problems.
The person is generally otherwise normal, including normal fertility.
The condition is generally not inherited from a person's parents but rather occurs as a result of a random event during sperm cell development.
Diagnosis is by a chromosomal analysis.
There are 47 chromosomes, instead of the usual 46, giving a 47,XYY karyotype.
Treatment may include speech therapy or extra help with schoolwork.
    Outcomes are generally good.
    Prevention is not possible.
The condition occurs in about 1 in 1,000 male births.
Many people with the condition are unaware that they have it.
The condition was first described in 1961.

Ivan Smith the Y chromosome is not a broken X chromosome. The father either donates a Y chromosome or an X chromosome during fertilization since men have both. So the sex of the offspring is determined the second the egg is fertilized based off of if the sperm cell contains an X chromosome or a Y chromosome.

If you only ever search for books in fire places, you will scientifically conclude that all books must be hot, but this is wrong because of *where* you were testing. To truly know what something is or does, you must follow the scientific method, and those scientists did not. They had too many variables.

The acne is caused by extra testosterone. Similarly when growing as a boy, the reason some people are much taller than others is that during puberty when growth happens if testosterone is present, or if an abnormally large amount is present you will grow taller. That's why most women are short, because normally they do not receive much testosterone until they are 20 and mostly done growing.

+Raidillon55 Uhm, intersex people exist. They have genitals that are a mishmash of both male and female (also secondary characteristics that can be all over the place) even though they can have typical male or female DNA.
DNA doesn't tell you everything about a person's physical sex. And then there's Androgen insensitivity syndrome which leads to a person with XY chromosomes to develop like a female would.
There are plenty of conditions that cause physical development we normally don't associate with "female" or "male" chromosone pairs en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersex#Disorders_of_sex_development
XX doesn't automatically lead to a female body and XY doesn't automatically lead to a male body.
It's not black and white, and we're just talking about the strictly physical aspects here.
I'm not even going to start about gender identity.

Yes, nature and nurture. Our genetic predisposition definitely tells a lot about how we are going to turn out as much as the environment that we thrive in has an influence. The thing is, at some point in this video, the narrative begins to disregard the fact that indeed, an extra Y chromosome, which ultimately leads to an individual developing male sex organs, could be responsible for extreme aggression of some. Remember, having an extra Y chromosome, means an abnormal control or production of testosterone which could possibly affect the physiology, hence the behaviour, of an individual.

      It doesn't, though.
It has been a theory but it's been disproven for quite some time now.
The issue with the first tests that seemed to confirm it was that they specifically took tall men in prisons and mental institutes as a sample (XYY men are generally taller) and tested them.
That'd be like taking all tall men you find in a library (again tall=more likely to be XYY) to see if XYY men read more than normal men.
In both cases you'd find more XYY men than 1 in 1000 because you picked a sample size based on the physical characteristics that XYY men commonly have.

Aside from just XYY, the question of the effect of genetics on behaviour, and criminality, is an interesting and morally complex one. There are almost certainly some genes that might give individuals a higher *predisposition* towards aggressiveness and violence, which may translate into more criminals having those genes. Similarly, there is a genetic component in psychopathy, even if not all people with psychopaths in the family are one themselves.
Should people with genetic predispositions be treated differently by the legal system? For instance, should individuals with a proven predisposition towards psychopathy be barred from giving evidence in court or positions of power? I personally think not, but its an interesting question.

You're right, nobody should be offended by facts.
That doesn't mean they won't hundreds of hate comments from people offended by science.

Wait did they just say 6 feet was average? Or was that the average heights of the tall guys they tested? Cause no way in hell is 6 foot not above average by quiet a bit..

thanks for this update ... I have been wondering, as I know a few wonderful XYY young men with NO criminal or weird behavior and as little boys .. their communities where worried because of all the negative hype around their XYY genes... they are now tall, good looking and mostly kind :-) being young men and all ....

“mostly kind” “being young men and all” are you implying that young men are typically not kind and they reached a good enough expectation for their demographic?

@@bjrock1235 My initial perception of their sentence is even opposite of what you have said, but I guess we cannot entirely be sure about what do they mean.
I do think the comment mean try to be not judgmental to different people.

There's a very high correlation between violence, aggresion, and y chromosomes across species.

I don't know if its a y but i have an extra chromosome. I don't think its a Y because my mother had told me how the doctor's had said I would be born with down syndrome and to end the pregnancy. Yet here I am perfectly normal and working as a house manager for an IDD group home.

What about XXY? Are those effects minimal as well?
