I absolutely hate the stagger mechanics... with a passion. Nothing makes me hate a game more that when you do say, 10% of your damage on normal attacks, except in a tiny window where you deal +4000% to make up for it... and window closes fast. If they want to make challenging monsters, fine, look to FF4 all the way thru FF6 and maybe FF7. Monster immunities, counter-attacks, energy absorption, changing weakness every few rounds, Heck even in FF10-2 (which was "okay" to be at best) the big bad optional boss could be beat by wasting your MP to zero, then changing to Rikku's mecha mode which did not use MP so you could kil boss without it leeching your MP and killing you with it. Ingenious !
But a darned stagger mechanic? get outta here. What a lazy and unimaginative mechanic.

I would have put Ardyn from XV up at the top.
I think the problem with Ardyn ( and FFXV in general) was how the story isn't flushed out in an intelligent manner. You need the movie, and the DLC , the animated short to piece it all together before you can appreciate his motives.

      @supremeoverlorde2109 Před rokem +3

In terms of character backstory, I do think Ardyn is one of the best --- at least if you're willing to take the time to watch the Prologue and play the DLC. He does truly despicable and unforgivable things, but honestly, out of all the villains in the series, I think he has the most understandable reason for doing the things he does. Not because his brother hurt him and killed his fiancée necessarily, but because he was locked in isolation for thousands of years and then found out he was basically used as a pawn in a very long game to save a world that had betrayed and forgotten him despite his efforts to do the right thing.
Yeah, I think I would have a gone a bit nuts too.
People talk about Sephiroth all the time (which I'm not complaining --- Sephiroth is a great villain). And I think ultimately, it's because he's story is EXECUTED in a more engaging way. But if you remove that from the equation and just look at who got a more raw deal, I personally think Ardyn wins every time lol.

Nael isn't the main antagonist of 14 past 1.x, which has been defunct for a very long time. As the servers don't actually include 1.x content after the launch of 2.x, SQEX instead revamped and added to the lore of the Meteor project and the fall of Dalamud, with Nael only appearing in a minor arc in the Coil raids and then never again after Turn 9 besides being a cameo appearance in the Ultimate fight. Hell, by the time you face "Nael" in 14 as the game is post 2.x launch, he's more or less already been dead for quite some time, with Bahamut having ripped his soul so far apart that when Bahamut tempered him to make him his minion he had to draw upon the physical manifestation of Nael's memories to even give him/her/it a body, which is why this variation of Nael has a female form despite being most definitely male in life.
For the past several years now (Stormblood onwards), Zenos Yae Galvus, while also being a Garlean like Nael was, is for all intents and purposes the main antagonist of the MMO despite him not appearing in Shadowbringers content for very, very obvious reasons.

OK, let's compare this list to the TV Tropes Awesome Boss section:
Chaos: should be below Matteus, regardless of being ahead of its time in terms of visuals, because it only had 2000 HP in the original release (though the Pixel Remaster's better). Also, should be above Cloud of Darkness.
Matteus: the Ensemble Darkhorse of NES era villains, plus the Dawn of Souls Remake means you get to fight him again! Plus, all the fights were consistent with the game's combat system regardless of quality overall.
Cloud of Darkness: vanilla final boss that comes out of nowhere.
Zeromus: another vanilla boss, this time with heavy attack spam in the first form.
Neo Exdeath: underrated villain, lives up to the hype in terms of difficulty.
Kefka: sequential, awesome visuals, Dancing Mad.
Sephiroth: Pros? Birth of a God, you fight with your entire team on the first phase, genuinely climactic, dynamic difficulty, One Winged Angel, Catharsis factor of using Omnislash finisher. Cons? constantly heals itself in first phase, hideously long attack animation in second phase.
Ultimecia: 4 phases, VFX of awesome, team members get taken out permanently, plus symbolism with Griever. Cons: dangerous if unprepared, summons phase 2 from nowhere, sequential marathon, can permanently take away party members, can nerf your stats, interrupts free summons.
Necron: Awesome Music, balanced challenge, good visuals. Cons: comes out of nowhere.
Jecht: Awesome Music, emotional ending. Cons: unstoppable long healing animation, easy if prepared, Yu Yevon.
    Shadow Lord: vanilla forgettable villain.
    The Undying: epic spectacle.
Orphan: highly challenging first form compared to somewhat challenging, less than impressive second form. Also, second form is immune to all forms of attack until staggered, casts doom on party leader, spams chain gauge reset.
    Nael: vanilla forgettable villain.
Ardyn: mirror boss, VFX of Awesome, war of attrition, doesn't go One Winged Angel, emotional final phase. Cons: a little more understated compared to other non-vanilla bosses, surprising difficulty spike, unpredictable move pool, interface screw, you can be overleveled.
Overall, the list should be along the lines of: Nael, Shadow Lord, Orphan, Jecht, Cloud of Darkness, Chaos, Zeromus, Matteus, Ultimecia, The Undying, Necron, Ardyn, Neo Exdeath, Sephiroth, Kefka
But note: Shadow Lord, Nael and Ardyn aren't meant to be the final bosses of their games. These are: Cloud of Darkness (still kinda vanilla), Zenos (awesome spectacle despite being Post-Final Boss) and Bahamut (probably would've been an upscaled version of the Comrades version, which in itself is one of, if not THE best boss fights in the game, alongside being made by Team FFXIV with Nobuo on music. Sadly, it's only found in novel format).
And special mention to Bhunivelze: it's God, some of the best visuals, Hypernova, four forms. Cons: Final-Exam Boss from Hell, annoying final phase unless you know what you're doing.
So the list should be like this: Jecht, Cloud of Darkness/III, Cloud of Darkness/XI, Chaos, Zeromus, Zenos, Matteus, Ultimecia, The Undying, Necron, Bhunivelze, Neo Exdeath, Sephiroth, Kefka, Bahamut (in terms of potential plus already having an extremely successful formula due to Comrades).

I feel like this list lost a lot of credibility when the first entry is not only a.) basically putting the online games as glorified honorable mentions, but b.) you didn't even use the currently available FFXIV for your entry. Not gonna say Nael isn't worthy of being on a FFXIV boss list, but I think it does a disservice to the game, when you use the long since shut down 1.0 version to make your argument about "why they aren't a good boss" While I would get saying "The online titles are too hard to rank since they are an ever expanding universe, and deserve a list of their own for each," to basically be like "*pfft* Online Final Fantasy games aren't TRUE entries", comes off as a very dated opinion, especially given the notoriety both games have nowadays.

I guess they have not played Final Fantasy XIV yet . Emet Selch aka Hades would have topped this list easily
    Character development 10/10
    motives 1000/1000
    narrative 10/10
    Actual fight 100/100
Even after dying the guy comes back from the after life and save the hero from certain death. But sephiroth number 1 just because it's ff 7 lmao.
If we count Crisis core, all Sephiroth did in a nutshell was...
Rebel againt humanity and burned down a town killing a dozen people? I guess? Nibelheim was pretty small.
He technically died and fused the life stream.
Killed president shinra, controled cloud mind to give him the black materia so he could somehow destroy the planet so the planet would react to the threat, send in lifestream to combat and then he will absorb it converting himself in a god
Hit cloud with a materia in the head, I guess that counts too, and....that's it? I think most of his encounters throughout the original ff7 where not even Sephiroth but Jenova, which Sephiroth controlled. Jenova did not do anything just to be a regular boss and offer some dialogue here and then. But wait I am forgetting something super epic Am I not?
Yes, Sephiroth killed Aerith. That's his only memorable moment. Once again...it wasn't sephiroth, it was jenova shapeshifted as sephiroth

Genuinely psyched that Ultimecia was this high in the list... gobsmacked you placed The Emperor that high though (there are going to be some ecstatic FF2 fans). But SURPRISE SURPRISE you just had to give the top spot to Sephiroth....don't get me wrong, I love him as an antagonist, but this fight just wasn't as good as the multi-parters (Kefka & Ulti). The amount of times I thought I had beaten those two and was subsequently proven very wrong was more than I care to admit lol (yes I know Seph has more than one form too... but that was a separate battle).
Oh and personally, I would have counted Sin as the Final boss for X....if your not going to count Yu Yevon that is. Given that Sin is the main antagonist for pretty much ALL of the game, and a FAR more iconic/epic fight than Braska's Final Aeon... probably would have counted the final Kuja fight for IX instead of Necron too to be fair....
Final Fantasy does have a tendency to occasionally just, "drop" an (pretty much irrelevant) extra Final Boss into the mix...even if they have no canonical reason to be there...
    *cough *cough
"Cloud of Darkness, Necron, Yu Yevon...(and although I'd rather not admit it... Ultimecia is sailing damn close to the wind there too...it did get pretty damn far into the game before she even got mentioned).

Hear me out: He WAS a good person, once upon a time, and it wasn't until he was desperate enough to demonify his first victim when he starts losing his humane side. According to the story, every time he demonified someone, he absorbed their memories and started losing what was his and what was others' memories. His descent into an evil character was because of his own heartbreak and betrayal against him. The poor guy.

He has that very hated instant kill move where it sounds like a heartbeat and if your main character gets hit it is game over thx to the FF13 battle system.... I once had death resist at +66% and it still killed me (I actually flipped my controller in frustration after that). I do enjoy Neo ExDeath and his boss music, but the spot is probably right cause his Grand Cross move is such a pain and a possible wipe as well (I once got hit and it gave me death, zombie, zombie, near-death and zombie is literally worse than death in FFV).

Throughout the story of Final Fantasy 15, I thought Ardyn was pretty much the best-written Final Fantasy antagonist since Sephiroth. However, having only one form to fight against, and the battle being 1-on-1 only... that seemed kind of lack-luster for a Final Fantasy game. I do understand the story reason why it would be 1-on-1, but I still think it could have been improved upon maybe by having the battle start with the full party vs. Ardyn, and then having Noctis go 1-on-1 with a second form or something.
And now there is Ultima from Final Fantasy 16. That battle had the boss go through multiple forms... disappointingly, none of them being named "Ultima Weapon"... That one did begin as a 3-vs-1 battle, and did end as a 1-on-1 battle. That seemed much more satisfying.

Also isn't Cloud of Darkness a formless creature that just takes a shape resembling a humanoid woman? And wtf is a "female personality"?

  • @supremeoverlorde2109
    @supremeoverlorde2109 Před 2 lety +2

The only games I've played to completion so far are FF6, FF9, FF10, and FF15. Kefka looked really cool (and he's one of the best written villains in my opinion), but I'm pretty sure I took him out in about 30 seconds by spamming Ultima. And while FF9's Necron was okay, for me it was the least memorable thus far. Probably because Necron just felt like he kind of came out of nowhere and I didn't have much emotional attachment to beating him.
I know FF15's combat is divisive, but I like it for the most part and the Ardyn fight IS pretty cool in my opinion. I kind of wish I'd gotten to fight with my other party members, but I understand why, from a narrative standpoint, it made more sense to do it alone. I also think the lack of transformation for Ardyn was a good choice, because it felt fitting for how personal this vendetta was to him. He wanted to face Noctis as himself, and I think that gave it a bit of an extra emotional punch. He certainly isn't much of a challenge though. I beat him pretty easily at level 49 --- far more easily than Ifrit or any of the extra bosses leading up to him, to be honest.
After thinking about it, I feel like Braska's Final Aeon might be my favorite so far. Jecht was a pretty epic fight and I struggled quite a bit with it before figuring out how to survive his strongest attacks. Taking him down was incredibly satisfying, and a little heartbreaking as well. I had to strategize throughout the fight, using up as many defensive buffs as I could while taking full advantage of Yuna and Lulu's magical abilities to do as much damage as possible. I know there are ways to cheese the fight, but if you don't want to spend hours grinding or doing extra content, it's a pretty fair challenge. Especially since Jecht can wipe you out pretty easily if you're not prepared.

This vid loses all credibility when Emet Selch is not at least top 3 final bosses in all FF. Let alone nowhere on this list. Shame.

I literally just beat him and it took me 1 try for both bosses, only had to do the second phase twice cause of the instakill. Guess I just farmed too much and got lucky lol

Orphan is really tough if you don't spend time leveling up and getting better equipment. My first playthrough I had terrible stats and equipment and struggled badly, but the second one I was much better prepared and beat him easily.

Supernova was so overpowered, I literally took weeks to get all of the characters to 9999 so I could do good, and supernova literally kills all if not 2 and my strategy to that was to give a mega elixir to cloud before his move ( yes I learned when he would use it and all his moves before supernova ) and then at least have cloud cure all of them. It was painful and so stressing

@@-itz_justandy3262 the disease was revealed in the Advent Children movie being called Geostigma. there is a way to cheese Sephiroth in the PS4 and Switch versions. first play the whole game with unlimited HP/MP and Limit Break and X3 speed on and grind each character's limit breaks then collect their ultimate limit breaks like Cloud's Omni-Slash for example as you go then when you reach Jenova and Sephiroth keep the unlimited HP/MP and Limit break on and spam limit breaks. the quicker you kill Jenova the more likely you'll have your entire in-game party Vincent and Yuffie included and Aerith excluded when you face Sephiroth.
