So today I'm making my EARLY winners & losers of the NHL offseason, seeing which teams have had the most impressive and disappointing summers!

New Jersey got Markstrom, Paul Cotter, Kovacevic, Brett Pesce, Brendon Dillon, Stefan Noesen, and Tomas Tatar. Got their starting goalie, revamped the defense, revamped their bottom six, and got much much tougher. That’s an A in my books

But they gave away Holtz for a 4th liner.. probably put the grade down a bit
Idk about devils over sharks per say but devils did a solid job. Devils and preds did the best of any team on offense vs defense imo. Both had moves in goal.
His grading is based on this offseason, Sharks draft is clearly the best one with Celebrini, Dickinson and Chernyshov. Combined with the fact they didn't spend like crazy in free agency. But I like what Devils built for next season.
Habs are winners for the simple reason that they stuck to the rebuild plan, and the Slaf signing will start looking pretty good very soon.
Not to mention they get Barre-Boulet who is a great NHL deph forward and get our AHL team more competitve for our guys like Reinbacher Beck Mailloux. 6 goals getting almost no minutes in 39 games is a pace of 13 goals. Thats not nothing. Maybe he is like Armia 2.0 this year for us?

Detroit signed Tarasenko and saved their off season but it was after the video was recorded
What about the devils how in the hell were they not winners ……
The Oilers forwards essentially have 3 50+ goal scorers(Hyman,McD,Drai), one potential 40 goal scorer(Skinner), 2 potential 30 goal scorers (Nuge, Arvidsson) and two 20 goal scorers (Kane, Henrique) and probably 3 in the 10-18.

@@Asymmetrical-Saggin He had 35 playing second line in Buffalo… he’s playing with the best passer in the league now. Oilers had a 310 expected goals last season which was first by a long shot, Kane had 31 expected goals and only got 24 and Foegle was expected to get 26 and got only 20 playing with Leon and Skinner is a positive finisher.
The caps over the devils for winners sure is a choice when Dubois contract is god awful lol.
It seems like Kevyn Adams and Lindy Ruff are planning on putting Benson, or one of our prospects Savoie/Kulich/Rosen in the top-6 to makeup for buying out Skinner.
That or a trade is coming.
I hope Adams is gone next year. Sits on his hands and does nothing.

Devils improved dramatically
Fuck it, Sabres decision to remove Skinner is fine. While Skinner scored a ton of goals, he was also responsible for a lot of goals being scored on his own end. One Big example is how Toronto won the Overtime game against them when Skinner was in a bad spot and Toronto won overtime by bouncing a puck off of him. Also by the time he got back in January to the end of the season, he scored a total of 9 goals.
The primary issue the team had was their defense and bottom 6. Which they addressed the bottom 6 issue. There were other issues with the team, one of the biggest being how they had a Sniper/leading goal scorer playing on the PK line that resulted in their injury, and how their power play was figured out and they didn't adjust anything until it was too late. While a top 6 trade would be nice, they did address the primary issue the team has had.
TLDR: Fixing the Power Play fixes the loss in goals you have with Skinner gone.
I don’t see Buffalo making the playoffs. They’ve been leapfrogged by some of the teams behind them.
The record will be extended 100%.
Sabres got the toughness we needed. Reimer is fine, though I'm hoping we see more Levi this season. Lack of that top 6 forward is most likely an issue of players not wanting to sign here without an inflated paycheck. Which honestly, we have a pretty bad history with those type of players. Not a perfect outcome so far this offseason by any means, but we accomplished most of what we wanted to do. It looks uglier than it is.
If we can bring in a top 6 guy via trade (Krebs? Benson? picks?) we'll be sitting pretty.
I think the Sabres and especially their GM is hoping the coaching change makes a huge difference for them in the coming year. Also this is the problem with missing the playoffs for 13 years , no free agents want to sign with them.

As a penguins fan.. I calmy disagree a little bit. The Grzlyck contract is pretty wild...
BUT one of our biggest issues was our bottom 6, and I think Dubas did alot to really tighten that up a little bit.
Now if we dont go and replace Guentzel and get one more player that can put pucks in the net then I will agree with you. But we need to go out and get goal scorers...

Detroit did just sign Tarasenko but I’m a little cautious because Tarasenko has been bouncing around lately like a pinball machine.
Edmonton did a better job at getting more exciting then L.A did😭
I actually am glad the Wings didn’t go and sign Stammer or any of the big names. Yzerman is REALLY hesitant to give out term, and with the prospect pool,
I feel like he thought they would be blocking the kids and it wouldn’t work with the long term plan. I feel like getting rid of Walman was more clearing roster spots for Edvinsson and Johannson who I expect to make the team in the fall. Yzerman also likes to have some cap space in his back pocket in the event something come up.
I think a team you can add as a winner is Vancouver, where sure they had some big losses in Lindholm and Zadorov, but they brought in solid replacements and got deeper with guys like DeBrusk and Heinen, and addressed the struggling PK with Forbort, while keeping Hronek. Only guy who’s still a question is Silovs being unsigned
Zadarov was a big loss. He was a big reason why their defense was so much better than the hot mess they were two years ago.
Toffoli only brings goals against, he sucked for the Devils, we were terrible with him as he didn’t play any D at all
I love Sabres but I’m disappointed in this off-season. We needed to trade that first rounder+ more if needed to get a new 2C. KA couldn’t find a trade partner but he should have overpaid to make a deal happen. We lost Skinner now and Mittelstadt left not long ago. That’s plenty of points rookies now are supposed to replace. The players we’ve added are fourth liners + Zucker who might be a third liner. -Great that will surely put us over the top…. Or not. We’re worse since last season no doubt.
I think this depends on the teams mentality. Hopefully peterka on the first line ramps things up on offense like 2 years ago when tage and tuch were crazy

The Oilers killed it considering their cap space. They are better than last year and that will be scary to anyone that plays them. Especially if they can keep that pk they had in the playoffs similar for the upcoming season. In their last 16 games, I think they allowed 1 goal and scored 3 shorties. Obviously that is unsustainable but if they can be close to that with their pp, they should win the west.

Didn't do much but Danny B cleaning up Fletchs messes. Biting the bullet now on bad contracts to free us up for the next few years while building around Michkov. 3 first round picks and either 2 or 3 in the 2nd round next draft in what's considered a very good and deep draft aren't flashy moves BUT they have the ability to be huge for a long time to come. Staying the course and NOT feeling they had to add because of MM is a big deal
Based on Yzerman recent free agency its honestly probably best he takes a year off of overpaying middle of the lineup guys on day and be patient. The Tarasenko deal should be great for them. The dcore is really bad so im surprised not much work has been done to it but he must have a trade in mind for someone cause there arent any top 4 dmen on the FA market anymore
Yzerman was a great hockey player. Just because someone was a good player, doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re a good GM.

This kind of discord often translates into the wheels coming off, so id keep a close eye on how Detroit performs out of the gate.

Kyle Dubas isn't a good General Manager...I wanted this young new GM to do well even though I dont particularly like Toronto, I wanted to see the evolution of a young GM but he just hasn't done well. We have been patient, he just isn't a good GM, if anyone disagrees I'd really like to hear why.
