100% you can do it!!!!!
Am I the only one who presses like button before even starting the video?🤣💯
I still gota a ton of rare tecate 4 parts if you want them for that build I wanna see them get used and I'll prob never gets a chance to build it HMU
@gabrielruiz-yt2fh dude you are the man 👊 thank you
Mcswole , read my comment
I admire your exuberance and willingness to attempt the harder things that other builders would never try. Best builder on the internet. I can't wait to watch more of this build.
Very flattered man, definitely not the best, but thank you so much!
Mike! I’ve been welding 20 years now and I’ve done aluminum fuel tanks for a few. I have a lot of experience and I’m from eastern Pa. If you see this in time, I’ll be home this weekend and would help you if you wanted. 4043 should be okay because that takes a little more heat abuse. 5356 is stronger but it doesn’t have a high operating temp range.
that gap is actually going to help.. mig or tig, get a copper spoon, well we call it a spoon , HF sells it in the welding section, think copper band in the rear of the weld section, the aluminium will not stick to it when you doing your root (1st) pass .. then get a stainless steel wire brush, ONLY use it for brushing the already clean or just fresh welded aluminum, do not let it be used for anything else.. welding aluminium tig or mig sounds diff from other welds, its normal, it will sutt up alot (black ash) its normal .. ive done alot of old harley engine repairs even w wire spool mig using the copper spoon to build it up.. years have gone by w no issues (on cast engines) obviously prectice on other cases/alum metal w the same gaps so you can get the hang of it.. good luck, it will be fine .. btw I use the omnipro 220 from HF , going on 6 or 7 years its great !
Burn over the area with the tig torch on ac with cleaning turned up on the welder. The Hz or balance to 60hz or maxing cleaning. Then clean all the soot off with a new ss brush. Lay a bead on one side to fill the gap before joining the 2 halfs. Never want to fill a big gap because it will skrink a lot more. Do a build up on one side then weld them together.
thought you were going to take the Allen Millyard approach with a hacksaw, then i see the sawzall come out and know whats about to happen 🤣 awesome video mate
Mike will need to drink a lot more tea to get on Allen’s level. But I can’t wait for Mike to weld together 2 Banshee engines one day.
This is turning out to be a great build. I’d like to see a Warrior build next. 🤘🏻
This. He already gets case savers from Weston at DRW and he's the go-to guy when it comes to modding warriors.
45 seconds into the video, already love it. Keep up the great work Mike!
Thank you man, glad you're enjoying it!
Tell your buddy to clean the interior glass of his vapor blaster with fine steel wool and coat the inner glass with ceramic coating. It would help him see his parts much better.
That mark that looks liked a crack is called a "meet mark". It happens when the material flows through multiple paths at the same time during casting, the leading face of the flow will cool slightly and when it MEETS up with material flowing from the other direction it forms a visible seam. Structurally its not an issue, but it can leave a visual mark.
The Z400 is coming along nicely. Your new tweaks to the graphics make it look more like a modern special edition of the old Quad Racer. :)
Finally but I’m so ready to see the end result of this z400
That's a bold move man, I wish I had your patience!! Man I forgot how sweet that raptor was, would be cool to see you rip it with Pete on his raptor!
I look forward to your videos more than any other show I watch. Thanks for the great content.
You got this Mike! FUKIN AAAAMMMMPPPEEEDD FOR THIS PROJECT YO!!!
🤘👊
Couldn’t be here any earlier man. Glad there was a video to help get this week go by. Love it man!
You know it’s gonna be a good day when Mike uploads keep it up!!
I did the same thing on an arctic cat dvx case. Been riding it for 6 or 7 years now. No problems
You were a freaking surgeon with a demo tool, way to use that sawzall like a scalpel! 👍
If the raptor fix works are you planning on putting up a full engine rebuild on it? I have 2 raptors that need work, but can't find any videos as detailed as yours when it comes to engine builds. Would love to build an engine using one of your videos. Thanks for the great content!
Boil the cases in a turkey fry setup with dawn dish soap in the water. The oil stays trapped in the metal and will give you bad welds. Also, before you remove the part, use a hose with fresh water to push out the oily water. If you pick the case straight up after boiling, the oil residue floating on top coats the cases😊
There is no way! I can't believe you headed to our back yard! Carolina Adventure World is a pretty cool place you will love it!
You'll never know if you can or not, if you don't try! Go for it!
There has to be a subscriber that lives near you that has experience tig welding or whose father has experience tig welding cases that can help out😊
I love your videos. Let me start off by saying I hate quads. I am a dirtbike guy 1000%. But I love your attention to detail how mich pride you take in your work the fact that you explain everything and the fact that your vids aren't time lasp. I have nothing but great things to say about your videos. Keep up the good work.
Can’t wait for the welding video. Make sure to include the practice welding too. Doesn’t matter how long it will be.
Mike, I am glad you’re trying to weld this yourself. You basically picked the hardest thing to try and weld. I weld professionally and do mostly aluminum
I’ll weld this for free if you ship it to
Ohio
Pre-heat the case and keep warm as much as possible watching this build has been fun YOU got this brother
Been TIG welding on diesel fuel tanks (aluminum) for the past 12 years. This is a difficult repair!!! You should take that old scrap case, cut out another section, and try to weld it in there before moving to the actual case. USE A CARBIDE BURR (for aluminum) if you get some contamination in your weld. Treat it as if you're a dentist. Mad props if you can pull this off while learning how to TIG.
Just a suggestion to your vapor blaster guy put some rain-x on the window so it beads off the window and you can see better
I love the quad videos so much. Leaving in all the hardships really keeps it real and gives a ton of good insight into how to handle these things. I don't know shit and these help a ton. We appreciate you sir.
Michael Sabo cant wait for the 1hr video coming LOVE the build
I've recently been looking into welding myself lately. Just gotta justify spending all the money to get started when I don't have a need for it to my wife.
Mike, if you want to get contaminants out of aluminum, especially cast aluminum, like petroleum products or whatever for welding you start with what you did then preferably go to sandblast then as what's done typically for powder coat, it's called "degassing". So first soak parts in acetone (if possible) for 20 minutes then put in an oven at 450 for 45 minutes then cool and soak in clean acetone for another 20 minutes. Now your part is clean of all contaminates except of coarse whatever was manufactured into the casting originally which you can do nothing about.
Yeeaaaah!!! Im so happy right know. First im shocked at how many people wanted silver wheels. That what i wanted as well. The final graphics are sick. And my original thought was blue bumper, black heal kickers, but with the silver wheels it ties in nicely with the bumper, heal guards, exhaust, handlebars, and shocks. Cant wait to see it go together. Look just like my 250 i had. 👍👍👍👍
Try and weld the 2 bad pieces together for practice. It will allow you to know the angles so when you go to the 2 good pieces you will be familiar with it.
Dam im loving this ltz content !!!! Bro I’m telling you z400 was the best quad I had hands down . This brings back so many memories on my z lol
You need to name this quad Frank. For the Frankenstein to come
I am really looking forward to how this comes out! Good job.
Definitely watch some videos on welding cast. Jodie from the welding tips and tricks channel is great. I bought 4047 filler for welding a warrior case based on his videos. Worked ok. Get a stainless brush, bake out the impurities with the torch at low amperage. Stop, bush, repeat. Once you get some filler in it seems to get easier and will weld better on your 2nd pass. Justin from the fabrication series also has some great videos to watch.
You got this man. Just another skill to learn and hone. Imagine then you'll never have to rely on others for any welding. It's one of those skills I've yet to challenge myself with. Not a cheap investment either...obviously. Good luck! Can't wait to see the results
When it comes to Welding Cases! Billy Lane is the Best Case Welder on The North American Continent! The Man can Build Weld's over Fist Size Holes! On old one hundred year old Panhead cases and reshape it to Spec! It's Amazing to watch the process!
And for Michael to attempt this! Well you have to start somewhere! Before you can either Fail or Learn! Simply just balsy! And I admire the F. out of his Tenacity!
Better later than never. Yeahhh baby!!!!!! The king had dropped another banger!!!
Man I can’t believe you cut the cases but it will be worth it in the end can’t wait for this build to be done
Love this build !
18:18 That is just so American of you...... Weighing in at 320ish,, trying so desperately to "keep the weight down" on all of your builds.... weight savings here, and there and everywhere....... Except the driver..... #living the American dream
You guys are the best. No other country can make me laugh and smile like you guys.
That has to be the most savage thing I've seen you do Mike...
Clean the surface and your tungsten rod with acetone prior to welding. You can set your machine to “clean” the surface, go slow, take your time, and melt the impurities out at the surface then add filler rod. Grind your tungsten to a nice uniform point
I am a tig welder but never done aluminum but I can say take it slow and if you get frustrated with it take a break and come back to it
Keep it up this is my favorite build so far
Love the content dude I have watch so many of your videos 🤘🏽
Preheating cast befte welding will help. But cast is difficult to weld. After welding you are supposed to cover the pieces with sand to slow the cooling. When they cool off too fast the material becomes brittle and will break.
Another Z400 video!!!❤ You spoil us too much Micheal
I think you can pull it off bro can’t wait to see the finished result love the videos fam
You are a hell of a lot more braver than I am when it comes to doing things like this. My ass would have been like “there is no leak, it functions the way it should, SEND IT!!”… but I most definitely understand WHY you are trying to do this, you want things to look the best they possibly can. I’m most definitely a suspension you. I can put a motor together and make it work, but I’m definitely NOT an engine builder or fabricator. You’ve gotten pretty damn good at all of this ATV stuff. Watching your videos from 5/6 years ago to now there is an INSANE progression. I’ve learned a hell of a lot just from watching your videos, from mistakes to fixes, there are always lessons that I learn. Now if I can get as good at engines as I am with suspensions I’d be pretty damn happy, but I just don’t build them as often as you do. Anyway, I just want to say that I appreciate your videos and all you bring to the ATV scene. Maybe one day I can get you to put together a 400EX motor for me, it’s my backup quad for XC racing that I run in muddy or super hard packed conditions and the 250R I’m building will be for all other conditions…. I really should trade that 400EX up to a 450R but I haven’t completely decided on that yet.
Thank you for the love and appreciation over the years Chris - it's been great improving my skills. Lots of it is thanks to guys like you who have offered tips and tricks in comments over time 🤘
I’m excited to see how you do on the case Mike. Keep up the videos. Loved today’s upload. You’re one of my favorite channels for sure
Great vid ,,,as always
Shaping up great Michael 👌 Keep that rs3. Run the newer one when your riding but please put the rs3 on for photos and reveal video. The older exhaust suits the quad far better 🤤
Man I really love how you are always trying something out of the norm. Can't wait to see how it comes out. Good luck learning to tig!
Acetone is your friend. Clean the surfaces and your filler rod. Run practice beads on the junk case's edge and use 20CFH of gas with a #5 cup. Don't see a tungsten grinder and you'll need one to bring your tungsten to a pencil point to control your arc so it doesn't walk on you. Blast the HZ and wear ear plugs as higher HZ will give you deep penetration--- oh yeah, that's what she said. Good luck!
Keep up the good work your videos are awesome
You sir are braver than me that’s a pressure point cause people love to bang on the shifter but I’m sure you will make it extra strong good luck can’t wait to see the final product.
That thumbnail is one of your best.
Yesss new vid dropped
Crazy video man, you’re braver than most on the case repair. Can’t wait to see you rip the quad when it’s done
Always good content Mike. Keep up the hard work boss
Cant wait for the next episode
Cool your back rock n roll you got this.
Hey Mike,
Graduated HS in 1990. Rode the Suzuki 250/500 back when they were brand new. What an era to be a kid! Loved every minute of it, very thankful looking back.
I LOVE the 400 Rendition! Wow!! Blue/Yellow/Silver is the right way to go! Thank you! lol!!
Side note, practice doing TIG welding on the old cases. Heck, weld the old piece you cut off onto the bad donor case.
Be SURE to ball up the end of the Tungsten before welding Aluminum.
Great video!!
You Rock! 👍🏽😎
Hour long vids of the great Sabo builds are missed.
Much love Mr sabo thanks for the great content your the man
Great video
You should have bought AHP AlphaTig 225xi they're $725 and work very well
Dope ass vid Mike. You’re my favorite CZcamsr on here!
This repair gave me anxiety, but Michael Sabo gets $#|+ done!
Omg Mike. I cannot wait for the weldung video. It's going to be a disaster. In a good way. I remember my first project. Good luck!
Man I'm really excited to see the next video! I've got faith that you'll get it figured out. I recently bought the same welder and I love it. You got this!
I wouldn't have sawed the housing halves. I would have milled out the damaged area and welded in a piece of round material. I would then have milled a new bearing seat into this. This would have weakened your housing less.
But I still wish you much success with this project and keep my fingers crossed that everything works!
By the way, I would have clamped the rims of the quad in the lathe and then smoothed them with sandpaper or whatever.
So, good luck and keep up your interesting videos. I really enjoy seeing them and find them very inspiring!
Cant wait to see how this gem turns out!! you rock mike, keep it up bro!! 🤘🤘 You put way too much effort into these videos, you know you've done a fantastic job when a 33 minutes video, or even a 2 hour long build video, doesnt seem long enough
Weld will hold up. Gonna be hard to get the hole lined up within the machining tolerance. Good luck 👍
Man I can’t wait to see the raptor video
Make sure and let that thing eat out there!
Man that is a daunting task! Great video
I need you to build a 2018 kodiak 700. I wanna see you port it and get it tuned. Trim some weight off it and ripp it. A utility quad mad spot with your touches. Been watching since the early days. Keep at it sabo.
Very interested to see how this turns out. Dude, you should check out the Primeweld 225X. Better welder, better customer support, and it supports the addition of a water cooler for the torch (they get HOT!). Not sponsored or affiliated with them, just a satisfied customer.
always a good day when mike uploads
You got it just from watching all your other videos Mike
Great video Mike.
Always look forward to your next video.
I've been TIG welding dirty cast aluminum a long time. Best tips I can give are to pre-heat it some with the propane or map gas. And adjust your frequency in such a way that gives you a little more cleaning action. Don't turn it down too much, but there will be a sweet spot you'll find. And when you get to an inclusion, try to stay on that spot with the torch until the inclusion pulls out. If all this works and you achieve a sound weld, it won't look like a stack of dimes because of "working" the inclusion out.
The pre-heating will help a bunch.
Good luck. I look forward to seeing how it goes. Pretty cool idea trying to fix the cases that way.
This build will look amazing! Those cases will be tough to pull off but if you get your Popeye chicken you'll thread the needle!🤣 But I love the idea of this build, and buy the RS-2! I have one on my CRF and it looks great and sounds even better! Can't wait to see this thing ripping!
Has to be clean, but more importantly Aluminum has to be sweated to remove moisture and other impurities.. It can be done, give me a torch and a welder, I can pretty much fix anything?! 😂😮Nice set-up, Tig Welding is an Art!! As I said, sweat the aluminum, Cast is definitely the worst! Love the Channel, love the content, Good luck Buddy!!
I'll tell you I have no clue if this is going to work but you've def peaked my interest. Can't wait till we really get into this build been waiting for years for you to do one of these. Best of luck Mike you got this.
Love the video man🤟 I’m doing the same thing to my wheels. I sanded my coding off and did a three-step polish and it brought all the chrome back.
Could have bought 2 cases for the price of that welding set up lol you crazy. We love it
My favorite time of the week! MICHAEL SABO VIDEO!!!!
You gotta put a mask on when sanding and cutting metal my man. Love the videos of course. Just make sure I can watch them well into my 90s! Super excited to see this bro lol. Welding is the one skill i too have been putting off. Partly because my buddy does it so cheap, but a lot because its an intimidating and expensive leap to take.
You'll do fine Mike, your a true skilled mechanic and craftsman...an inspiration for me to tackle rebuilding my harley twin cam .....can't wait to see this suzuki done man
I like trying stuff like this, but why not just weld the shift shaft hole up and machine the hole back
Good luck brother. Everyone has to learn sometime. Practice practice practice
Mike at some point you're gonna have to invest in some dedicated impact wrenches and update them, just a suggestion so stoked to see the end result! Funny thing is my ex LTZ-400 was silver/metallic navy blue frame with white plastics bone stock so its still the stock idea just swapping plastics really
It can be done.Fun project.
Tig welding is an art. I've been practicing for a couple of years when I get a chance. Let's just say that I need to dedicate myself to only Tig welding over mig welding. Two different disciplines.
Neat to watch but not what I woulda done. I like that you did what you thought would work best.
