Marvel mystery oil in all of the cylinders seems to do the trick. Id fill the oil sumps back up quickly as exposure to air will accelerate rust. Spin it over by hand in a few days to see if it frees up. If not just pull the whole engine and send for a rebuild. Probably want to drain the transmissiin and read diff with that mucb water

Hey Mike, I’ve dealt with a lot of flooded engines. Go find bio diesel.
Fill the engine up with diesel instead of oil. Jump the starter and turn the motor over with no plugs for 30 seconds or so. Drain the diesel from the drain plugs and repeat until it’s clear of moisture. The biodiesel will strip all the moisture out! And it’s oily so will not damage bearing on the crank and so on.

I’ve actually ran an engine with diesel oil and drove around the block a few laps on really bad cases. Generally when you have water in an engine you can try and flush it out with oil but it will take a dozen full up and drains and tons of wasted oil to do what a few gallons of diesel would do.

I think the engine still has a good shot of working. I'd try to run it as is. The oil hopefully would have helped protect the rest of the engine, even with a little water in it.

Kind of like how Yamaha used to use their frames to hold the oil for their dry sump system and the water might not have done as much damage as it could have. You'll have to look at the engine schematics to see what else was in there with all that water.

I’d get yelled at for even asking to use the garage (god forbid it be used AS A GARAGE) to do even a stereo install, so no possible fluid spills, and don’t think it was packed full with storage either. He seems insanely cool and knowledgeable as well! Should be reg with this project!

My reaction when you pulled the second plug was the exact same, pure shock. Also about the cylinder, looked to me like possibly pitting on the cylinder wall, but could also be debris from corrosion. My concern is that metal expands and flakes with corrosion and could build up on the top of the ring and scar up the cylinder or gaul and seize over time. Spray the oil,of choice in there let it soak and then try vacuuming it out and re-inspect, the cylinder prior to any cranking. Love the video, I bore scoped the piston holes on a 2011 f150 before with a Milwaukee scope but that one you bought had a superior image and the articulating end is super useful.

Also, I feel like the likely scenario was the exhaust system filled up and possibly backfilled into the cylinder which is why the one cylinder is rusted up. Car may have been parked on a slope possibly? Not sure, but I’d still pull the valve covers and the intake just to check for rust in the top of the heads

I live in southern Arkansas next to the Ouachita river, I have a buddy that was riding around in the river bottoms and got stuck in the back water from the river. He left the truck overnight and came back the next day to get it out, he could not find anyone to help him as the truck was now sitting in water up to the middle of the tires. The truck sat there as the water came up and eventually the tuck was completely underwater for the next month. We along with others drove john boats in the bottoms to see the truck but could never find it. When the water finally came down enough to get the truck out with help from many people with trucks and large tractors there was prop marks on the roof of the cab lol. He drained the oil lubed the cylinders, drained the transmission, rear end, and front diff. Let the electrical dry out and a couple weeks later he was back to driving that truck. I believe the year model was a 2000 model Chevy Silverado. Of course that year model did not have all that electrical stuff that your car has. From my understanding the truck is still running and going strong. Wish i could find some pictures of it.. Good luck with your car can't wait to hear it run.

Make sure that valve is not stuck before you turn the engine over so the piston don't hit and bend it. Great video. Hopefully it works out OK. Them not draining the water might be a good thing. It means no oxygen in the engine so no rust.

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  Před rokem +1

Very good call on the valve; I will definitely be rotating by hand before any power is put to it. Quite a few people saying the same thing about the lack of oxygen possibly resulting in minimal damage. It's going to be interesting.

Mike, if you mix transmission fluid and vacuum pump oil together, they make at fantastic combination to live and remove moisture from cylinders. Fill the bad one and let set two or three days before turning over by hand. Fog the intake as well to help the top end, scope out the sump to see water/oil separation levels if below crankshaft all should be well. Positively check out the remainder of the drivetrain.. I did a Buick 401 CI motor that was 400ft underwear for 4 hours and got it ruining the same day and it never had to be rebuilt..

Had a similar situation on my first Corvette a 1967 Vert.. Tropical Storm Doria hit us in NJ in 1971 and all our cars went under including my ‘67 Corvette while I was there. Our detached block garage sat a little higher up but the water was over the dash. As soon as the water receded and the Sun started drying up things I went to work on it. I had just turned 20 years old so my knowledge of Corvettes was limited. I jacked the car up first and took the drain plug out of the oil pan and like your situation on your second drain bolt water being heavier then oil came out crystal clear which was surprising. Being under the car I moved the oil catch pan out of the way and let the water drain out on the concrete floor until I started to see some darker color in the water I then slid the pan back under and saved myself from creating a mess. When it completely drained I took the cannister oil filter down next. The ‘67 Corvette from the factory still didn’t come with a spin on filter back then. I then dropped the car off the stands and started taking out all of the spark plugs and went inside the car just to crank it a few times and the pistons pushed all kinds of water out the spark plug holes. I then gave it 5 quarts of new oil and a new replacement oil filter for the cannister. I then replace the same plugs back into the cylinders. Went in the car and started the car and the car ran great. It didn’t hurt a thing and I was running it around as I was rebuilding it but changed the oil and filter once again about a week later being I thought it was a good idea. I took the complete interior out of it and sat on a Plastic Milk Crate for awhile. Checked the gas tank and lucky for me there was no water in the gas tank. I ordered all new gauges and clock, tack and speedometer from Chevrolet and pulled the dash out and cleaned up all the wiring with CRC back then and Cue Tips. One of the local garages knew a lot about 4 spd Muncie Transmissions and knew right where to drill under the trans so he could drain the trans for me,tap it and insert a small drain plug. Water surely came out with the 90 weight gear oil used in the trans. Refilled it and was good to go. On my own back then I purchased a suction gun to suck out the gear oil in the rear end and refilled it. Back in the day it was a lot easier to handle a job like this. Not any Computer Control Cars then. I give you a lot of credit taking this on but $22k you sure took a chance. My car never burned a drop of oil I should mention. Sorry I sold that car about a year after I fixed it up but this fellow from another town kept bugging me to buy it and the newer C3’s were out there drawing my interest so I sold him that car for $1800. I had paid $2150 for at 3 years old in 1970. I then purchased a like new 2 year old 1969 427-435hp 4 Spd Tri-Power Blue Coupe with just 11k miles on it for $3100. I still own 4 Corvettes today all coupes a C2,C3,C5 and C6. I noticed your C6 sitting in the garage. I am going to follow up on your progress and see if you made anymore video’s in your project. At 72 I could only think about projects today.

Just found your channel, really awaiting to see how this packs out!
For that cylinder, I do engine work, there doesn’t seem to be any major pitting there from that video. Putting some oil and solvent in there and slowly rotate the engine will probably get it free if it isn’t moving, but considering the car rocked back and forth while in gear in your first video in this series the engine seems free.
Those piston rings will likely take a bit of a hit polishing that rust off, but that liner still looks pretty decent. That cylinder might burn a bit of oil and might be a few psi low on compression, but I doubt you’re ever gonna notice it.
It’ll most likely run just fine!
Just turn it over a bunch with the starter motor, a very small amount of oil in the cylinders, all the plugs installed and the coils disconnected to get most of the ‘polishing’ done at low RPM and she’ll rip!
I would love to own one of these, but here in Europeland they’re unfortunately really hard to get by!
