- Hey guys, in today's video I made a rustic, live edge, flower vase out of red cedar. Not only is this my best selling product at craft shows, it is also one of my favorite pieces to turn. You really can't go wrong with this kind of product. It is very unique and I'm very surprised that I never really see people making these. Obviously people make vases but never really any live edge vases. I like it a lot and I hope yall do too. If you enjoyed the video, hit that like and subscribe button! It helps the channel grow. WOAH! Thank you for the super thanks! That’s awesome! Hope you enjoyed the vid!
Red cedar is crazy hard to find here in the upper Midwest, but I can see where this idea would work great with many other woods. Especially anything spalted, but would have to stabilize first. Great concept and so easy to customize each piece 👍
Yeah, this was my first time making one out of red cedar. I’ve made a bunch of these vases out of oak and they came out pretty nice. The good thing about red cedar that I’ve noticed is that it rarely cracks. So even though the pith is right in the middle, I don’t usually have to worry about the whole piece splitting
I love Cedar also. But, the colors fade away quickly. No matter what finish you use!
When I use a wax finish, the red definitely fades away quick. When I use waterlox gloss or general finishes wood bowl finish, the color stays nice and vibrant for me. I guess the urethane finishes keep the color from fading. You should give it a try!
