    Fair introduction video for people who may not be as familiar as I am about the bases for these iconic characters. You may pay particular note to the Bill and Ben-related segment, where you can clearly see why their basis and the wagons used on their private railway had to be so low in height. A narrow bridge clearance was meant to be the case with Bill and Ben as well; however the Reverend Awdry never elaborated on it. Regards, Samuel Farris.

    Maybe awdry didnt want to for design purposes.

    • @WaltsNephew
      @WaltsNephew  Před 2 lety +5

      Interesting idea! I think since Gordon belongs to the NWR and Scotsman is LNER (eventually BR and private ownership) they would be subjected to different protocol. Furthermore, since Gordon's express is a stopping train that does not last all day, he wound't need more than one footplate crew

    • @russellgxy2905
      @russellgxy2905 Před rokem +2

      Well, I think the in-universe reason is the fact Gordon never got a Doncaster rebuild. He was rebuilt by Crewe instead, so would've gotten a 6-wheel tender anyway. Don't particularly like a Fowler tender on him, but a Fowler tender makes _slightly_ more sense for the size of Sodor's mainline compared to a LNER 8-wheeler.
      It's pretty likely Gordon would've arrived on Sodor with a GNR-style 8-wheel tender (with the coal rails) but we never saw that in the books. There's a theory (could be a canon explanation but I'm not sure) that the reason certain engine's are drawn so differently in the early books compared to their basis is because the illustrators were going off how the engines would've looked when the books were _published_, not when they took place. Gordon doesn't look like a "proper" A1 not just because he's the prototype, but because the illustrator would've been using Gordon's rebuilt form as a reference! It's the same reason Edward looks a bit bigger than a real Furness K2, because he would've been rebuilt at least once by the mid-40's, or why Henry's old shape is so inconsistent because they only had descriptions to use
      Sorry if I overexplained, I just find it interesting how little inconsistencies work into the lore of the series

    Okay let me say how clever this actually is. You went a few different angles for this and I actually understood each of them. Lemme break them down some of these if else confused
    Thomas: Obviously his iconic shape is based on the LBSCR E2, with the extended tanks, but teh J50 dates back to the very first model of Thomas, which Wilbert Awdry made for Christoper. It probably wasn't meant to be a J50, but the sloping side tanks of that old wooden model are very reminiscent of that class.
    Edward: I actually don't think Awdry had a class in mind when thinking of Edward other than "typical British 4-4-0", and the classes chosen for this video are actually quite close. The LNER D20 bears the enclosed cab Edward has, instead of the open cab more common to old 4-4-0's. As for the D40, not only does it have a closer overall design to Edward, but I think it's the only preserved British 4-4-0 that's the closest to Edward's official class, the Furness K2. Both are Scottish-built 4-4-0's with roughly 6ft driving wheels, used on railways with small tender engines in hilly terrain, and have a very similar power output.
    Henry: Awdry meant for Henry to be an Atlantic at first, to be a middle ground in design between Gordon & Edward. But illustrators kept messing him up so Henry was retconned to be a failed prototype Pacific, which in concept was just a larger Atlantic. But he wanted him to be drawn correctly, so he became the first engine in the series with an actual basis, the numerous LMS Black 5.
    Gordon: What else is there to say, Awdry meant for Gordon to be a Doncaster Pacific from the start. While he isn't a _full_ Doncaster thoroughbread anymore, the lineage in undeniable. And he's the only engine on the railway to have an established, real-life, sibling.
    James: While he's a 2-6-0, James is pretty much based on the concepts of 0-6-0s. The LNWR 18-in "Cauliflower" is quite typical, and represents the second-last railway James worked for before coming to Sodor (also fairly certain they used to have wooden brakes). The Furness D5's, rebuilt with L&Y boilers, bear resemblance to James as well with their Belpaire fireboxes and different shaped cabs. And finally the L&Y Class 27 bears a direct lineage to James because he's officially based on a Class 28, which themselves were rebuilds of the 27's. Assuming James was modified to have his pony truck and wasn't actually built with it, this actually implies that James was rebuilt _twice_, and that's _before_ coming to Sodor!
    Percy: Probably has the strangest origin, as even Awdry states he's not sure what class Percy actually is, or who his builder is. However, he _does_ cite Trojan as having some influence in Percy's design, though never states Percy is based on Trojan directly
    Toby: Slightly upset no footage of the LNER J70 trams has surfaced, though the concept of steam trams running on and alongside public roads is dead on. In fact, I believe the first tram featured in this segment and its coach formed the basis for _another_ steam tram character decades later in the form of Flora!
    Duck: Pretty obviously based on the most numerous Class of British tank engine, the GWR 5700 class; a design synonomous with the Great Western. Bonus points for using shots of the class with two autocoaches, as Duck does gain two of them in Wilbert's later books.
    Donald & Douglas: Another perfect representation, and the first engines to join the railway, arriving in their official BR paint, crests and all (though minus their add-on numbers of course, heheh). And one of their class is preserved in blue, just like they are in the books!
    Oliver: I just realized...Oliver runs away to Sodor with an Autocoach and a GWR Brake Van. Could Awdry have been inspired to use the consist from The Titfield Thunderbolt as inspiration? Also, excellent use of a 1400 class with two autocoaches (Oliver gains another after joining the railway), and another 1400 seemingly prevailing over a diesel! Especially a Multiple Unit, since those would've been the types of trains to replace Push-Pull engines like Oliver
    Bill & Ben: I don't think Awdry ever gave an in-universe explaination as to why these two are so short in the books, aside from their basis, but their basis is pretty damn inarguable. Weird to think how Bill & Ben are said to be twins, but their basis', Alfred & Judy, are over a decade apart in age!
    BoCo: His name is just a syllable-swap of the Co-Bo nickname for his class, the BR Class 28. Strangely, BoCo likely travelled the least distance of most characters to get to Sodor, since his entire class was based in Barrow-in-Furness when he first arrived on the island in the mid-60's. The only other engine in the books that would've been based around there beforehand is the engine BoCo shares a branchline with: Edward!
    Diesel: If Duck is representative of the Pannier tank and all things Great Western, Diesel is representaive of all things BR Modernisation Plan. That plan was actually revised in 1957, one year before Duck & the Diesel Engine was published. And the Class 08 specifically is basically to BR what the 5700's were to the GWR in terms of purpose and numbers
    Aaaaaand I think I'll stop here LOL

      Right, they are the basis. But, if you've ever taken a marketing class, you have to use more congenial language that is adaptive to a broader audience where the subject is more clearly recognized based on the simple title. As you noted, there is very little in the way of images for a Large Seagull from the FR so I substituted the other partial basis engines for both the Railway Series and the Reverend's model. In terms of Henry, he was always intended to be an Atlantic to make it remarkably easy for Christopher to differentiate between the three railway engines easily and it is for that reason the Ivatt Atlantic is featured here

    Walt's Nephew this video is totally amazing, I didn't know that you would dedicate the memorable characters from The Railway Series and of course Thomas and Friends, by showing their real life counterpart locomotives.
    I think you really did a good job on this video, however I spotted one mistake.
    The tram engine that you featured on this video, are sort of the wrong steam trams. Because those were not the same trams that Toby was based off.
    I forgot the name of the steam tram of what Toby is based off, but the kind of steam tram that Toby is based off. Is a wooden type of steam tram. Like the first original interurban red cars of the Pacific electric, because if you can remember those trolley cars. They look like trolley cars made by pullman, which I believe they were made by Pullman. But anyway those old cars were made entirely out of wood.
    And so the steam trams from England, one of their first original steam trams that they made we're made entirely out of wood. And they had like four windows, two windows on the right side of the steam tram and two windows on the left side of tram locomotive. And of course they had cow catchers on both the front and the back of those locomotives, and of course they even had side plates covering the wheels.
    I wish you could have found old video footage of those old wooden British steam trams, the ones that Toby it's based off.
    Even though you kind of made a mistake from there, because this video didn't show the real life counterparts of what Toby is based off. I still say you did a great job on this video, dedicating the characters from Thomas and Friends and The Railway Series, and showing of what the characters are based off

      @@WaltsNephew well that sounds cool to hear.
      And just to let you know I enjoy the classic Thomas show as well, mainly from season 1 to season 7. I enjoy the show, from the Britt Allcroft era.
      I even enjoyed the CGI show, from season 13 to season 20 or 21, I forgot I have to look it up again.
      Because I'm sure it was season 22, when Mattel started to make it into Thomas and Friends Big World Big Adventures, which is the CGI show that I dislike the most.
      So the classic era of the CGI show from season 13 to season 21 or 20 are the only ones of the CGI show that I like.
      And just to let you know I have the original 26 Railway series books, written by the original author the Rev W Awdry. I even have the first Thomas the Tank Engine complete collection book, that contains all 26 really series books in one big book. Also by the original author.
      So 26 + 1, which is the Thomas the Tank Engine complete collection. Would make it 27 books of my collection by the original author himself.
      Just to let you know I even have three other railway series books, written by the author's son Christopher Awdry. Which was true in a way, but what really got me into trains at the same time since I was a kid, when I visited the Southern California Railway Museum and when I visited Disneyland and saw the trains from there.
    It was really Disneyland, the Southern California Railway Museum and Thomas and Friends that got me into trains. And even VHS video cassettes about trains that got me into trains as well, and just to let you know I still have some of those train VHS cassettes. One of them that I have dedicates the Santa Fe Railroad, the Southern Pacific and the Union Pacific. I even have another one called there goes a train starring Dave Hood.
    But for all my life I've been a huge fan of Thomas the Tank Engine and all of his friends from the island of sodor, I've also been a big fan of the American spin-off TV show that introduced Thomas to North America which was known as Shining Time Station.

      @@WaltsNephew yeah you're right, I'm sure you heard about the new 2D Thomas show that will be coming out soon. When I saw the trailer for it, oh my God I thought it was really terrible. He kind of reminded me of the wacky sensation, and more cartoony type style like the old Mickey Mouse cartoons when they were in black and white and transferred into color. Those cartoons from the late 1920s, the 1930s and 40s.
      If you don't know the company of Mattel now owns the rights to Thomas, and they are taking the show way out of hand. And they really making the show to be like almost like the old Mickey Mouse cartoon, but all in all they're trying to compete with other wacky TV shows out there such as SpongeBob. They don't realize how great the show was, when it sticked to more of Railway realism or Railway practice as the Rev W Awdry had described it.
      Or Railway regulation as you said to me.
      I hope Mattel will realize that the show will fail, and that nobody will watch the new 2D Thomas Show.
      At first they made it worse by doing the previous Thomas series which was known as Thomas and Friends Big World Big Adventures, along with the animated movie as well. They added too many crazy Cooks for both the movie and the show, whenever they would talk they would move their bodies, which I thought was really unnecessary and uncalled for. They introduced the two new characters Nia and Rebecca in a very odd way, they were always making fun of Sir Topham Hatt giving him lots of trouble and so forth which I thought was unnecessary and really uncalled for. And above all, they had to do very unnecessary and uncalled for daydream sequences, which I thought we're really a nightmare to watch, really unnecessary and really uncalled for.
      So anyway the previous Thomas CGI series Thomas and Friends Big World Big Adventures and even the movie we're really something that myself and the other Thomas fans didn't expect, and Mattel definitely ruined the show at first from there.
      So if they failed with that show previously, I hope they'll realize that the 2D show will fail as well. Because I really predict that the new 2D animated Thomas Show will fail completely

      It's a very good point you bring up here. It does seem a bit arbitrary that I would include engines from the Arlesdale or Culdee Fell railways and not include those other engines as you mentioned. With the exception Bear, I wanted to include only the characters Rev. Awdry included in his books that were mainstay characters (hence the lack of City of Truro, Flying Scotsman not associated to Gordon), Captain Baxter, and others. But I do have another Thomas-related compilation in the works!

      Yes indeed! That segment, and the whole compilation for that matter, was so fun to make with the addition of the television series music paired to the visuals

    kinda funny that Stepney is still the same Engine

      Right, Rev. Awdry realized he should base his characters on genuine engines rather than inventing his own and finding basis engines that somewhat fit the mold (makes it easier when people would write correspondences to him)

      Unfortunately I couldn't find any footage of a J70! So I made do with footage of a metropolitan steam tram in Wigan (which is better than looking at a still photograph if you ask me hahaha)

    you do know that Duncan and Rusty have themes, right?

    • @WaltsNephew
      @WaltsNephew  Před rokem

      Yes indeed! I thought about including them but it seemed more fitting to have the Skarloey Rwy. engines together with one pice of music connecting them. Especially since SKaroley, Rheneas, Sir Handel, Peter Sam, Duke and Stanley/Smudger don't have themes I really thought I best to just extend the railway theme throughout
