    I was wondering, can I use an old wax ring if it’s still halfway decent?
    It’s 1:30am and the stores are closed...really wanting to get this job done.
    I started it but then got called into to work some overtime at work.
    Thanks.

    Wax was a nightmare for our house. It's an old house, so it would often have clogging problems, whenever you had to plunge/unclog the toilet it was always an anxious event of "plunge, flush, and hope you don't see water flooding out of the base" because it seemed like there was 50/50 chance the wax seal was gonna break (my dad replaced 4 of them in a year, not sure why he kept using them. I assume it was the price; around $3 for wax vs a $10+ rubber).
    After he moved back to his home state and we inherited the house, the very first time one broke; I replaced it with rubber. That was about 2 years ago, haven't had any issues since.

    I like using a wax bowl seal I work in an apartment complex and i have installed a lot of new American Standard Champion 4 toilets 1 other thing I used to seal the toilet is the Fernco toilet seal it actually sticks to the toilet and it has finger to hold it into the floor as far as caulking around them I don't the plumbers that come here said don't do it cause if your seal should start to leak we want to see it on the floor and not going down stairs....and 1 other I found out with that toilet is when I used that plastic wash mine leaked so I just use the metal one I have been using these now for quite some time and I bet I have maybe 5 clogs but that is what they put in it.

    Wax, if the toilet is wobbling it was never installed right to begin with. With all of the variables in flange height and toilet manufacturing differences, that rubber ring cannot possibly cover all the possibilities. And I only silicone the sides and front. Leave the back open so a back up or leak at the wax ring can be seen by the homeowner quickly. If you seal all the way around the water has no choice but to go under the tile and soak the subfloor, and it will be a soggy mess till they realize there is a problem.

    Here's a dilemma, put a new toilet in, toxic smell began as soon as it was installed. Thought I messed up, so I called a plumber. He removed the toilet, the seal was good, and the smell dissipated. He could smell it (later told me he didn't smell anything after he reinstalled the toilet, or that it could be the chalk I used near the tub) checked the flange and looked for holes. (No smell prior with old toilet). He found nothing. All the traps were being used. As soon as he left, the smell returned. A toxic, mildly burning your nose smell. He said he could come back and do a smoke test, but I'm completely confused as to how putting a toilet on the flange could increase a smell like this?

    • @Blackdog4818
      @Blackdog4818 Před 2 lety +1

      My new toilet is a Mansfield Summit. Is it possible it's the toilet itself?

    • @Kennymolotov
      @Kennymolotov  Před 2 lety

      The smell is coming from (most likely) a compromised seal. Which is why the plumber is offering a smoke test. So it could be any of the traps in the washroom, or even vents in the washroom that aren’t sealed. Unfortunately it sounds like you’re going to need someone to do a thorough investigation…

    • @Blackdog4818
      @Blackdog4818 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Kennymolotov Thanks for the response. What "seal" did you mean?
      I tried to pry up the original metal flange, which was held down by 6 screws, because I needed to raise the flange after a tile job, and as I tried to pry up (only a quarter of an inch), I saw the whole white piping moving, realized it was attached, and immediately stopped and screwed it back into place. The plumber did a thorough check of the area, didn't see anything, checked the stack underneath in the garage for a water leak. Nothing. I also heavily chalked the bottom of the toilet, so I'm not sure how a seal near the flange could be letting out toxic gas. Since it's level, the wax ring is around the white pipe, I'm not sure sewer gas could be going around under the flange I messed with. This is a nightmare.

    • @Kennymolotov
      @Kennymolotov  Před 2 lety +2

      It’s a complicated answer. The toilet sits on a seal called a gasket. If the gasket is compromised it can be leaking fumes. But, also each fixture in the washroom has a P-Trap, each P-Trap carries a trap seal, if any of these seals are compromised fumes can be coming into the washroom. If the washroom has a floor drain, the floor drain can be losing its seal. If any of the vents in the wall are compromised, same story. A smoke test like the plumber suggested a lot of the time helps find the source of the compromised area.

      It you have a wobbly thrown or your floor/flange has sunk, it will cause leaks like that. It the base has any play in it because of the flange or floor, it will keep happening. A temporary halfarse fix is to shim the base to keep it from moving.

  • @tonymanero5544
    @tonymanero5544 Před 3 lety +2

    To me it’s malpractice not to replace a multi turn valve with a new quarter turn supply valve. Then the rubber seal you use does not have a short skirt that would cover the flange area below, especially if some hack plumber uses spacers to elevate the flange but doesn’t seal the spacers. If the drain backs up, the waste liquid will be forced between the unsealed spacers. The fluid master Better Than Wax seal is rubber but has a skirt. Some plumbers are against a skirt
    because they say waste can accumulate on the skirt, but the skirt should hang down and not construct the drain opening.
