The TV Rain situation is very complicated. What started this latest crisis was a presenter who stated that he was involved in obtaining winter gear and food for the most recently mobilized Russian soldiers. For Russians, including the ethnic minority in the Baltic states, the concern for soldiers, many of which were forcefully mobilized, was "there are our hapless relations stuck in freezing mud due to Putin" but for Ukrainians it was, well hell, why did they not join the 100s of thousands of others who fled to Georgia, or are hiding in the woods - for God's sake, if they don't stay stuck in the mud, they will be trying to SHOOT US!!! The problem with many Russians in exile is a failure to realize how much anti-Ukrainian sentiment is built into their own world view - with deep roots, e.g., the largely falsified history of Russia - seriously, Catherine the Great virtually created modern state propaganda when she demanded her historians to "revise" the history of Rus to elevate Muscovy by hook or crook, who destroyed the Ukrainian Hetmanate (self rule in South-Eastern Ukraine) to create "Novorossiya" - New Russia. Russians have never had to stare honestly into the past, from Ivan the Terrible to the Holodomor. That is why Russia must lose - unless, as painful and ugly as it must be, Russians are willing to confess to centuries of imperial delusion and terror, they will remain incapable of participating fully and honestly in a liberal democratic world . . ..
Very well said.
@Bill
Thanx for the explanation. Hope other channels will provide a fuller discussion.
If TV Rain was using a Latvian media license to drum up sympathy or support for Russian soldiers in Ukraine - revoking the license was justified.
@@nyhtfall5260 I'm sorry, There some serious confusion here. It is an anti Putin channel that relocated to the Netherlands as I understand.
Thank you for giving further information. I agree Russian's and to an extent still, even now Ukraine's allies, don't understand how wary everyone who borders Russia is of Russia. As you say much anti russian sentiment exists in those countries, and will now for decades if not generations in Ukraine. Understanding has improved since the start of this, but still, I see comments that are surprised when they realise how much many eastern European countries either hate or look at Russia like a monster. A monster that has caused trouble, invaded and interfered in their countries for many generations. Yevgeny Prigozhin even boasted about messing around with the US elections now, if you believe a word he says.
In addition, when I see the red cross or amnesty international offering aid to the mobilized Russians so they can go and kill Ukranian's more easily, it has opened my eyes to how out of touch some of these organizations are and really changed my opinion of them. Its the same sort of disconnect, and I understand it's the distance that creates it. It's hard to know what everyone is thinking across the world until you see it.
Russia, China and Bricks need to be stopped, else we'll see a lot more war, suffering, and repression in the decades to come as these Authoritarian powers try to take over the world. I hope this is largely done peacefully but we have to see the war through now its come.
@@agnelomascarenhas8990 It is an anti-Putin channel that relocated to Latvia, but that does not make it objective in coverage, and at times, it tries to be "neutral" as if there is no way to say if Russia/Russians are at fault. There is a lot of moral equivalency on the channel, and that has its roots in many Russians not fully acknowledging their history. I'm American and I want to tear my hair out when some people here minimize the horror of slavery, coming up with tales of "good masters" and "defending Southern culture" (and my roots are in S. Carolina and Georgia!) - every nation, including mine, has issues with historical blind spots but they have been THE tradition for Russia for centuries - a country without borders, a messianic nation, a people with souls more profound than any others, a country that "needs" to have "tough love" from Czars, with even Stalin just "making a few mistakes" etc. etc. etc. A great nation can make great mistakes, no more or less than we as humans are just plain flawed. The biggest danger, for a country as with a human bully, is that inability to admit to mistakes . . .

Excellent work Christiane. Thank you.
The problem with TV Rain in Riga has a dirty background story also that was not hinted at by Christiane.
They acted in Riga ignoring regulations by Latvian law. And they did it quite arrogantly.
The host of one program invited Rigas mayor and then began lecturing him about the soviet monuments that is a very delicate theme in Baltic republics
Etc etc
TV Rain was acting in Riga very much in imperial style as if they were in a vassal province
You can't fool math.
Before the war Russia had a GDP just above Spain.
Now with less they are in a expensive war under sanctions.
The USSR went bankrupt over the 1979-89 invasion of Afghanistan.
This is much more costly.
Allies combined GDP $50TRN; Russia $1.4TRN before sanctions
Here are more numbers. Russia has lost 70 million a day in oil revenues from Europe. Russia has spent 25% of national budget on war so far. Tick Tock.
if u are honest, Russia would have taken Ukraine, but for Nato rightly throwing its intelligence might, its advanced weapons and hardware might, imposing sanctions, and giving 100s of millions in support to ukraine. Any nation having to deal with the might of nato would be fighting a losing cause. Hopefully any nation thinking of attacking its neighbour for wrong reasons will think twice. But anyone who believes simply if Russia and Ukraine frought it out without any form of help Russia 99 times out of 100 would win. And if this turns out to be a good lesson for those leaders thinking of starting unjust wars at least something good will come from the innocent deaths.

@@rickmorgan1441 well that's the thing! Baltic states are always been under threat beeing occupied again by russia. The fear has always been there, deep in our counsciousness after years of soviet occupation.
The russians in Latvia (apart from a tiny historic population) are a consequence of forced resettlement during the the Soviet occupation (Latvians killed or deported, russians brought it; brutal, same as in Ukraine). So they don't qualify as an actual minority. They are rather civilian occupying force that crossed our border and settled in Latvia illegally.
In any case, the best thing now is to limit the presence of anti-putin imperialists like TV Rain in Latvia, because at the end of the day they show respect for the Latvian language, laws, or history, continuously pushing their russian chauvinist perspective upon us.

There are good people everywhere. Only, in Russia, they are very very few. They're kept alive just so naive Westerners keep up the hope that Russia has a chance of changing on its own. That chance is zero. Russia needs to be broken apart and individual parts need to be democratized similar to how the Western allies changed Germany and Japan after WW2. That's the only chance of ending Russian aggression against neighboring states. If Russia survives the war in Ukraine in one piece, it will take some time to restock, then attack again.
Time to defect
TV Rain should continue so long as it follows the guidelines of the country it broadcasts in. EU policies, NATO activities, and country restrictions need to be followed. If they want to say something but know that they can't, they should take one of two options.
1- Refrain from broadcasting those items
2- Say what they want and prepare to leave from that country
They must remember that a state of war is ongoing, and the EU, NATO, and individual countries are enmeshed in it. Being able to broadcast from another country is a gift, not a right.
TV Rain should engage with other potential host countries, recalibrate their threshold of allowable discourse, and get back on the air. It's a learning curve, but now that they've started to acclimate to this new reality, it would be a shame to silence this voice/outreach to the average Russian.

In Latvia TV Rain decided to choose "national channel" license, so they had to broadcast with Latvian subtitles. But TV Rain rejected this rule - for 6 months (!). It was possible to register an "independent license" - free to broadcast and without any subtitles, but that was not TV Rain's choice. And interesting - they wanted everyone to speak with them in russian, but how you can read the documents you even can't read? And showing part of Ukraine as a par of russia in TV Rain's map? And supporting "our boys (russian soldiers)"? So... "bad russians" are blaming Ukrainians, "good russians" are blaming Latvians.

I respect Milo’s. Having said that, Natalia Sindeeva, the TV Rain owner, expressed open concern for’ boys’ in trenches that do not have basic necessities while fighting and killing Ukrainians. Maybe Vlad missed this message but I think he said what he said for the sake of political future in defeated but undivided Russia. I am sure such Russia will end up surviving. And Tv Rain was not kicked off CZcams or from their studio in Netherlands they got to use for free. So let’s not feel pity for them, what that ‘journalist’ said in live feed was perfectly prepared and vetted by his producers before he said that. And than Natalia said exactly the same thing unscripted.
The fact that russians are fighting the war of aggression doesn't mean we can't feel compression for common people that got to the frontline against their will.
@@DoubleDwarf this compassion is misplaced. You should feel compassion for Navalny, Karamurza, Nemtsov, Yashin - people who put their lives on the line to fight for the future. These 'ordinary' people you mentioned were sticking thei head in the sand for a very long time, they subscribe to 'they know better at the top' mentality and now are being used as yet another vehicle to kill Ukrainians. I feel 0 empathy. Many of them couldn't even find Ukaine on the map if you asked them. Ignorance gets you killed as it does for them and they did not even try to hide or simply refuse to go. I support Latvia's decision to suspend the license of that Russian media. That anchor's statement was really stupid knowing how Latvia is so against the invasion of Ukraine. It's that TV Management's fault. It's just so stupid.
How can it be hat young Iranian girls seem so much much more brave than Russian men in demonstrations against their country's authorities?
Perhaps because a considerable number of the population in Russia are perpetually inibriated..
The mentality is different and there in Iran these protests are going on many times. There is no such dictatorship in Russia as in Iran
Young Iranian girls have a passion for freedom, education, and manifesting their destiny and are fed up with oppressIon. I don’t see that much with Russians, they’ve been so fear controlled. Navalny inspired many Russians and Putin just threw him in solitary confinement in prison.
Well sympathies are running thin after ukraine and all the threats, vague, ominous and even some direct threats as well not to mention Salisbury and everything else
People wanted to respect Russia but Russia today painted Russia as the good guys and then turn out to be total aggressors, what a joke! And no doubt people in Russia want respect over putin allegedly falling down the stairs and pooing himself? Respect goes both ways...

“Rain” said they were collecting resources to improve conditions and comfort for Putin’s soldiers on battlefield. Why this had not been mentioned?
Nobody is shutting Rain down. They can continue to work on CZcams as many other anti-Putin agencies are. Latvia does not want them to use local TV networks, and they have valid reasons.
Such politicians as Vladimir Milov and Aleksey Naval'ny and their fight with the Putin's regime is the only hope for current Russia

it is OK for most. On the positive side, it helps accelerating conversion to alternative sources of energy and energy saving measures for building heating.
I really do have so much respect for Nalvany, however you spell his name, he would,ve and maybe still will be a great President if the people rise up against putang. I,d loved to see it!!

Mr. Milov shows considerable bravery criticizing Putin. Usually Putin poisons his exiled critics.

If NATO allies are assisting Ukraines efforts, why not just allow them to join NATO? Although it definitely would accelerate tensions, it would also accelerate an end to the invasion in Ukraine.
It’s risk assessment, nato is wise , just for now until ukraine secure their borders ..but we didn’t leave their side
It’s funner watching Ukraine dismantle russias military without full NATO involvement. If NATO got directly involved the war would be over too quickly to make any money off of it.
NATO Charter can't just be rewritten overnight. 31 countries are involved ffs.
Yeah , and escalate this war to ww3 then get ur house blown up, u still wanna support?
NATO is working on that particular issue - trying to expedite the expectance procedure.
The news said Putin fell down stairs and crapped his pants. What else is new?
Imagine that,Ukraine actually attacking Russia. How dare they defend themselves. Putin's going to complain it's not fair.Moscow's not far away and Vlad might get a Christmas present he doesn't want.
So are you Australian or British today? Or are you Ukrainian again?
It cost more for me every time I splurge. Factor in the tip after overindulging and the result is absolutely devastating.

The best defense against communist authoritarian dictatorship is to strengthen democracies from corrupting influences and nepotism. It takes an active and concerted effort of the people, to ensure that our democratically elected politicians are truly representing our interests.
We must also address what hostile communist countries are doing, both domestically and abroad. Democratic Nations must stand together against their lawlessness in defense of global security, human rights, and enforce International Law.
Indeed!
Putin is a clone of Hitler and not Lenin.
The country is now extreme right wing.
Otherwise all those oligarchs would be stripped of their palaces and yachts etc.
Communism is deader than the dodo in Russia at present.
what? putin's regime is not communist

Are you conflating economic policy, with the failed and outdated western philosophy? Communist countries typically operate more like fascists than anything; being that their governments have direct control over the means of business, despite imposing failed policies based upon flawed beliefs they've elevated to the point of ideology.
They still call themselves communist. And yet use the semiotics of a former century. Built upon a history of nothing but failure.
@@China_Secret_Police they don't call themselves communists, that's ridiculous
Lets Pray the Russia People Turn on Putin.
The Russian people has no trust in Putin anymore. We just can’t do anything about him, the system is too brutal and capable of destroying any protest.
We have to wait for the new opportunity for the protest, when the army will be on the side of the protesters. not there yet.
What an „expert“. He tells us what we want to hear, what we are supposed to believe. This has nothing to do with expertise.
They said that that would happen last august, now we’re at the end of December and … Russian economy still working.
The attack was carried out. with drones right after Ukraine announced last week that they have built drones that could fly to the distance up to 1000 km, which seems impossible specially, in the war time to build a drone from scratch, but the drones look exactly like the Israeli harop drones, which coincidentally, have 1000 km range, it seems that the new government in Israel has supplied Ukraine with these drones. According to Russian news all the drones were shut down, but the damages happened because of falling debris which caused a fuel truck to explode. three Russian troops were killed, and some suffered burns while trying to put up the flames the main Russian bombers, the White Swan, and the turboprop bombers were damage also because of the falling debris.
Hopefully Israel will give Ukraine a million more of those drones so they can destroy much more of russia. They need to target russias electric grid and gas facilities. Make them all suffer.
Don't trust the clown
never underestimate a Ukrainian with a 3D printer
Bro, it's Soviet drones (yes, they developed even those), even russian media already figured out out
all that damage from a destroyed drone? lol c'mon man use a little common sense not even a destroyed cruise mile could do that much damage
Removing Russia from the Global economy should have been the free worlds first act. It is shameful that this has still not been done and proves yet again that the world values money over human lives and human rights. 😮
You are correct, every country that trades with Russia is a terrorist supporting nation that has little regard for international law or peoples lives.
maybe, but dont forget the USA and my nation the UK lied to sell a war in Iraq! the leader of the UK since has been knighted and given title of SIR, G-Bush and cheeny never held to account for the lies, nor was the intelligence leaders who lied.
Other nations across the world see us in a bad light too. Maybe not as bad as Russia, but truth is, other western nations including France and Germany at the time called out the invasion of Iraq as illegal. the UK and USA went into Iraq with no plan for what came after, which resulted in ISIS running riot in the middle east, with the fall out still happening to this day! So always remember how we see Russia, other nations see us in that vein! making up claims of WMDs to invade, remove and install a pro friendly Government. And while politicians in the UK and America who call for Putin (and rightly) to face criminal charges they are the same people that supported and still do BUSH and Blair- more than 1 truth can true at the same time... Russian leaders need stopping and held to account. But when you ignore your own leaders that commit war acts on lies it comes off as 2 faced
Same should apply to China
Money talks
Hopefully, this insanity is over soon!
I support Latvia's view. TV Rain has made mistakes and tried to manipulate in a way that was not acceptable.
*To ignore the role that CCP has played in exacerbating this situation, is to completely ignore the situation as it stands.*
Like how? China says they were remaining neutral.
@@JaneDoe-tn8tn
Far from it. China has been undermin sanctions, blocking at the UN, and indirectly funding what Putin is doing.
Just love this guy. What a brilliant speaker.
It is not an overreaction for Latvia to take the license from a station that has a journalist that invites Russians to give help to the soldiers who are ill equipped. While we may feel for the soldiers, every hardship they face will weaken their military and inspire a mutiny. No independent tv station should allow that kind of reporting. They have freedom in another Country and anything that smells of help for Russians is just wrong when Ukrainians are dying and suffering in the cold and dark.
IDK, but I was watching some non-political video's from inside Russia....and there seems to be no complaint about the economy....
