    Gonna have to disagree.
The fact that it was Iroh explaining Zuko's backstory fit a whole lot better. It wouldn't make sense for Zuko to just randomly open up to people. But because it was Iroh, someone that everyone respects, this allowed for *some* change.
His development being more spread out is what helped things feel more natural. He later does open up to Aang (sadly the kid was unconscious) and Katara, which helped the heroes see him in a different light. But it had to happen naturally. I really don't see why Shouto would've opened up to Deku when he did. They don't know eachother that well and his stoicism and general persona would indicate he doesn't need/want sympathy from others.
That's why it was so weird when Neji started telling his backstory for Naruto and everyone to hear during their fight.

    • @glanni
      @glanni Před 5 lety +84

Also, it feels more impactful to have another character sympathize with the tragic antagonist (of book 1 that is) because Zuko doesn't seem like a pathetic manic villain who whines about his tragic backstory.
Iroh is the guy who puts in a good word for Zuko in front of us, the audience, and through that we feel much more like Zuko has enough dignity to carry something where people who love him suffer just seeing him (or rather *the one person who loves him)
I love Zuko more than any other character out there, after all this years still.
This great character guided me through my difficult growing up, he provoced my thought about what really matters, and i was extremely obsessed with destiny at the time.
Not forgetting Iroh though. But as a very emo teenager i naturally identified with Zuko.
      Zuko is best.

Like if you write a redemption arc better than Zuko's you are actually a god.

@@lillianb1516 I think one thing is to remember is that Todorokis arc is not a redemption arc. He was never the main villain we were suppposed to dislike. He was part of the good guys, Zuko wasn't. In "The Storm" we get insight and a reason to look at Zuko as more than just a villain. Hell the the crew is a vital part of that episode to our understanding of Zuko. Considering the reason he got banished in the first place is cause he spoke up to save a bunch of new recruits that was gonna be sacrificed in battle.
His care for others (that he was probably told was benath him and it's disgraceful that he did care) is what got him banished, and after all this time you, the audience, get to see, at the end of the episode where he chooses the crew over chasing the avatar, that that care is still not lost. I think its a vital part for the audience to see and it was all masterfully put into the episode "The Storm".
Honestly i do not get why people are comapring Todoroki and Zuko, Beyond their fire powers and burn marks i wouldn't say they have that much in common. Todoroki hates his dad and wants to pove a point which is "i am not my dad, i hate that im even slightly connected to him" while the only thing Zuko can think of is how to prove himselft to his dad. Thats like the complete oposite of Todoroki, and it sets up to completly different character arcs, which i think are incomparable to each other.
Last thing is i don't think trying to argue that one exposition style is better than the other. Preference is one thing but saying that becasue Zuko had slower development with more flashbacks it means BnA did it better is not a fair argument imo. Then trying to support that point by comparing Zuko and Todoroki, two charcter with almost oposite character arcs.. it just doesn't work that well.. imo at least.

But I seriously get offended when people say that he's better than Zuko, because honestly, no matter how lovable of a character Shouto is, he doesn't hold a candle to the emotional depth/character development that the viewers get to see in Zuko. There's something about the character of Zuko that seems more relatable, more humane, makes him seem cooler by comparison, imo. Idk. Love them both.

She was calling her mother with a want to get out of that house, presumably so she wouldn't potentially hurt her children. She also made comment on how the kids are looking "more and more like him." Endeavour had abused her. In the moment when she poured boiling water on Shoto, she didn't see her son, but rather her abuser.

Shotou's mother wasn't suffering from a mental illness. She was suffering from the abuse, and so stressed/scared that even her son's left side terrified her.
That's why Endeavor is only the second among the heroes. It's because his actions and underlying selfish character show through to the public, while All Might's genuinely good/helpful/friendly character shine through brighter.
Shotou's mother was in an arranged, forced marriage. There are some VERY horrible implications there, and I think one of the future events will be Shotou calling out Endeavor, either in public, or in private, and forcing Endeavor to retire.

I think zukos burn just makes more sense than Todorokis. Like his mom just went a bit crazy and was like "man, half of my son sure looks like that mean guy, so i guess ill dump so boiling water on it", while zukos was set up well and made sense while also introducing the audience to the ideals of ozai. Not to mention further building the world. Idk i just think its better written than "she went crazy"

    • @RelativelyBest
      @RelativelyBest Před 4 lety +70

Actually, I think Todoroki's case has a lot more interesting and complex subtext. Writing it off as his mom just "going crazy" is overlooking the deeper implications.
See, Ozai just decided to burn half of Zuko's face off because he was huge bastard who only respects strength and thinks love is a weakness, etc. It's relatively simple and boils down to Ozai being a supremely shitty father and Zuko struggling to accept that he's wasting his time and hurting himself trying to get Ozai's approval.
With Todoroki, the implication is that his mom went nuts because half of him kept reminding her of Endeavor (which prevented her from completely loving her son even though he was innocent of his father's actions) and she was under such mental strain from Endeavor's abuse that she eventually snapped and tried to destroy the Endeavor part of Shoto. Despite his age at the time, Shoto seems to have understood this perfectly, which is why he specifically blames his father for the whole event.
Now think about that for a moment. This also implies that he sorta agrees with his mom regarding his left side: Shoto doesn't just hate Endeavor for being a shitty dad, he also hates the part of himself that is the same as Endeavor, to the point where he won't even blame his mom for maiming him. Like: "Yeah, I totally get why she did that. Sometimes I kinda want to destroy the left half of my face as well. It's a natural reaction when you have to put up with my dad every day."
This probably a big part of the reason Shoto refused to use his left side: It wasn't _just_ to spite his dad, he actually couldn't stand being half Endeavor, meaning he was trying to reject part of himself.
That makes him quite a bit more messed up in the head than Zuko, who simply wanted his abusive father to accept him. To complete his arc, Shoto has to accept the part of himself that is the same as his awful dad, and that's harder for him to deal with because it's literally a part of his genome and something he is reminded of whenever he looks into a mirror.
In this sense, Shoto's complex is basically an upgrade (downgrade?) to Zuko's. It's almost as if Hirikoshi looked at Zuko and was like: "How can I do this, except _worse?"_
And none of that is overtly stated, just heavily implied: The reader/viewer is mostly left to infer it from the context. It's not even clear if Shoto himself realizes just how much his own self-loathing plays into it.

I think we forgwt that the two MAIN figures in Avatar is Aang and Zuko and not Aang and any of his other friends. We see Zuko develop and change and we see the desperate rage filled outcast turn into a principled man who changed as time grew under the care of Iroh. Aang and Zuko are the same but slightly different. Of course they are presented as contrasts but Zuko and Aang are both taught how to be at peace and taught balance. Aang is taught to balance the elements while Zuko is taught to balance himself. Streamlining something doesn't make it better or worse. Only different, Zuko was not a plot device, but a character.

Lol. You simply can't compare Shouto and Zuko-the gap is too big. Zuko's story is 10x painfully more impactful than Shouto's it's not even funny. I love Shouto to death but he doesn't compare to the complexity of Zuko's character and how endearing he becomes to the audience.
I'm sorry but Shouto's story seems just like a way to make the main character "shine" and to show that he would save anyone at all costs. It seems dry tbh. Zuko, on the other hand, shows a person experiencing so many events in his life that eventually shapes him up to become the best person he is. I'm disappointed that so many people say that Shouto is on par with Zuko just because BNHA is so mainstream, so "in". They have to watch Avatar first before saying that.

Blue Lightning zuko feels so much more real and humanized as a character too. Todoroki feels like this God-child that has little limit. Zuko, although very pitent in combat, is a perfectly incapable character and couldnt even beat his sister. Hea much more relatable, and more well written. I do feel like were being unfair to My hero, because cmon, comparing almost anything to avatar makes the contrary look garbage. MHA is a great show.

Zuko on the other hand lived his life and grew from it, and his coming into contact with the main character was a consequence of his growth rather than his growth being purely because of the main character being a part time therapist.

Zuko is hands down a better character. Shoto is a kid with daddy issues. Once you remove his father from the equation then he’s another normal boy. Even if you remove Zuko’s dad out of the picture, he will still be complex because of his connection to both the fire lord and avatar. He’s had good and evil playing tug of war in his mind for years. He admits at the ember island that he’s no longer mad at his dad, but at himself. Zuko has multiple layers to him; whereas Shoto is more of a flat character. I still love the socially awkward candy cane, but he is definitely not on the same level as Zuko

It's probably here somewhere, but apparently not within the first... 30 comments... and I'm too lazy to keep looking. I don't come CZcams to read the comments so I'll restate what is probably already here.
ZUKO IS A VILLAIN!!! Or at least he was for MORE THAN TWO-THIRDS OF THE SHOW!! Zuko has more flashbacks because he's the proud owner of "The Best Redemption Arc in the History of EVER" award. On top of that Zuko is actually a main character, while Shoto is not.
Shoto's got a metric shit-ton of character development that happens in the Tourney Arc and the Stain Arc... but that's kinda it for a long ass time. I mean he's memorable in the Kidnapping Arc, but he's not central to it. I guess you could say the License Arc has him coming to a memorable point, which I won't argue, but he's kinda there to have issues to flesh out SOMEONE ELSE.
Zuko, on the other hand, is a developed character by episode two. We know EXACTLY what he wants, his main reason for wanting it, and how much he's got going for/against him at any given time. THIS BOY HAS A EPISODE ALL TO HIMSELF! AN EPISODE WHERE THE MAIN THREE CHARACTERS MAKE NO APPEARANCE! Why? Because he fucking needs it. This SIXTEEN-year-old child has the impossible task of trying to capture a legend, and has been trying nonstop for THREE YEARS! The backstory was not going to be something that they could do in exposition, this boy doesn't open up in any way- no fault to him or the show, that's just fact, that's just how he is- with that known there really wasn't any other way to handle him.
When referencing the Storm- I know someone else says it- you really should've remembered that Aang and Zuko are supposed to have parallels here. That's the whole point of the episode. Not to mention Iroh may start with an exposition with the crew that then turns into a flashback, but the crew was hearing this as exposition, so I'd say that doesn't count- if they were flashbacks that the characters didn't see (like in Zuko's memories of his mom and sister in Zuko Alone- this also doesn't really count, but it was the only one I could think of, since he's not telling anyone and is either suffering from heat stroke or mulling over his memories with nothing else to do) then I'd agree, but since they do understand there is no problem.
    Okay, I'm good.

    • @blankness8
      @blankness8 Před 5 lety +33

I don't hate dub, just prefer sub, so I'm probably not the best person to answer your question but here's my take. I tried watching dub to see what the hype was about but I switched back to sub because:
      a) I have no issues with subtitles being “distracting” as some people say; I was an antisocial bookworm as a kid.
      b) The sub just seemed more impactful -- a lot of the dubbed screaming (anime screaming is very frequent lmao) grated on my ears, whereas subbed always gives me chills. Then again, this could just be because I cringe easily and if it's in English it seems more “cringey” because I know the language.
      c) The way English VAs say Japanese names sounds kinda wrong sometimes, and because a lot of the emotional moments have people screaming Japanese names, it doesn't work all that well.
      d) Because I watched dubbed after watching subbed, I realized there's a lot of story/implications lost in translation (oftentimes I see dub-watchers have oddly different perspectives on the same scenes than sub-watchers and vice versa), simply because you need to cram English where Japanese was. The translators do an awesome job, but it's impossible not to miss some meaning.
      e) Japanese humor/way of talking is extremely different from English humor/diction. (E.g. You don't see people in cartoons fainting with a "ding" sound or bursting into tears at not-so-tearful moments or go into that chibi form thing; it took me adjusting to understand why it was funny when I first started watching anime -- call me slow, but eh). So when English people suddenly start talking with the Japanese humor, I think that's when my cringe-factor is triggered haha. (Again, I cringe easily -- can't even watch my school's plays without wincing, so I'm sure this doesn't apply to everyone).
But I can see the appeal of dub, especially if you find Japanese cringey. “Haters” probably are just hating because people like to bandwagon hate-waves.

    @nah3551 Před 6 lety +529

I don’t really understand how you can say My Hero Academia did it better when Avatar was the one that actually moved you.
I can certainly see the argument that having Zuko’s backstory exposited to some random crew members is underwhelming. But comparing the two’s backstory exposition is really a bit apples and oranges.
The purpose of having Iroh exposit Zuko’s backstory wasn’t simply to get the story to the audience or instigate change with random crew members. By having Iroh tell the story instead of Zuko, it helps establish the shame and self-blame Zuko carries in that he CAN’T talk about it, and is more content to just have his crew think he’s a jerk. It also shows us more of who Iroh is, in that he wants people to have compassion and understanding for Zuko, even though Zuko rejects his help. If Zuko were able to explain himself, it’d undermine his entire character. This also characterises the entire conflict between Zuko and Aang as being people with conflicting goals who could potentially get along but for some major emotional roadblocks and complications in their circumstances, rather than being a good and bad side as they've seemed to be up until this point.
And while there’s no change in the relationship between the characters since they’re no more aware of each other than they were at the start of the episode, there’s a major shift in how the audience perceives Zuko’s pursuit of Aang after seeing both of their stories. And the fact that their relationship is the same but we as the audience have new context for it creates a sense of dramatic irony and powerful desire for them to FIND that change in relationship, rather than having the story hand it to them before we even know to care about it. And with Zuko’s issues, it’s clear that it’s going to be a major challenge.
Zuko’s half of the episode is also in stark contrast to Aang’s half, in which Aang DOES tell his story directly to Katara, which fosters a change in their relationship, because Aang’s emotionally capable of doing so.
By contrast, Todoroki is more than happy to lay everything out in the open. He knows that what he went through was wrong, and far from hiding it, his refusal to use his left side is his way of publicly shaming his father’s actions and goals. So it only makes sense that he’d tell Deku straight up, and just as it’d undermine Zuko’s character to talk about his past openly, it’d undermine Todorki’s character if he wouldn’t.
As for Todoroki’s story being more streamlined, this is just my opinion but to be honest that just made it feel incredibly underwhelming to me. If a story’s good, why would you want to get it out of the way as efficiently as possible rather than spending time to really appreciate it? Certainly not Naruto-tier time, but I think My Hero Academia’s ninja-sprinted way too far in the other direction, to the point that it barely even introduces a conflict before it’s all resolved.
The fact that Todoroki’s flashbacks were so short just left very little to emotionally engage with. It felt more like reading a wikipedia synopsis. And if all it took for him to change was one fight and a few words from Deku, a kid he barely knows, then it just feels like it can’t have been a very strong issue for him to begin with. I'm reminded of when Jimmy Valmer reconciled the Bloods and Crips with “I mean, come on.”
By contrast, Zuko gets multiple chances to reject his father and empathise with Aang but turns them down time and time again, even when he wants to take the leap, because his desire to please his father is so powerful. It's not just that he doesn't want to reject his father, it's that he can't. That’s what makes it so engaging as he struggles with it, and what makes it so powerful when he finally overcomes it.
Zuko’s father is such a powerful figure to him that we didn’t even see his face until season 3 (at which point he’s revealed as a mere man, showing how much the characters have grown by comparison since thinking of him as a distant warlord in the Gaang’s case, or from the perspective of a traumatised child in Zuko’s case). By comparison, Todoroki’s father’s just hanging out in the open from the get-go with his goofy little moustache, and Todoroki’s comfortable enough with him (and comfortable with himself enough to deal with him) that he even interns with him shorty after Deku’s little pep talk.
What’s funny is that Deku’s perspective of All Might is actually more akin to Zuko’s perspective of his father, in that it begins from a place of extreme, untouchable reverence and slowly progresses to a more level footing as Deku grows stronger and wiser. So it’s not as if the show isn’t capable of this sort of long-form character development and perspective shift.

Some of the people only get their backstories explained. Like Twice, he doesn’t get any character development really. Most characters go through their change in a few episodes which for a supporting characters ark is fine. But for a main character to get a big change in a short span of time isn’t great writing. But MHA doesn’t have too many more mains than ATLA.

I guess the scar is not something that holds Todoroki in the same way it holds Zuko or you could say Zukos scar holds him stronger and deeper than Todoroki with his scar.

@@clickbaitmullings It is poor because you compared between two flashbacks that serve entirely different reasons. Zuko "flashback" wasn't just to show his past. It was to show two things: First is that Zuko is internally conflicted and confused. Zuko is, in fact, a moral person who is abused by his father without knowing that it is abuse. Thus, he internalizes his pain, goes out his way to search for his honor, without knowing that it is just for approval from his abusive father. Secondly, it shows why his uncle is there for him. His uncle understands Zuko struggle and wishes to help him see the truth. Iroh cares for Zuko. Not only did that flashback from Iroh speech tell us that Zuko doesn't know why he is miserable and conflicted but also tell us how much Iroh cares for his nephew. The story gives Zuko his character depth but also builds up the dynamic between Zuko and Iroh. It created the whole redemption arc for Zuko and allowed growth. If we are to compare them, icyhot is just an angsty kid from an abusive family who became nice after some talk-jutsu. For Zuko, his arc lasted freaking seasons. It went from him going from mad for blood to giving up, back to going mad for blood, to the point of betraying his own uncle (Literally the only one left that cares for him), becoming prince once again but still conflicted; slowly realizing his mistake and confronting his father. I have final right now so this is a shitty ass argument but to dumb down Zuko's flashback is extremely short-sighted or intellectually dishonest.
TL;DR: Zuko had a fking arc while icyhot is a generic angsty kid (arguably a better written sasuke).

It's hard to see the reason for labeling this as a comparison about which is better if you are only going to compare the series at two points and admit that the arguments are arbitrary. All it's going to do is create flame wars and confuse your audience as to whether you're serious or not. I'd be way more interested if you went into the effects of the different methods or the reasons for their approaches.
For example: Todoroki explaining himself to Deku acknowledges Deku as a human being/worthy adversary, shows how he feels that their fight will validate part of his identity by denying his father, and prepares the audience for a dramatic shift in character that can be spurred by logic. He is concious of what he wants and knows why he wants it.
Iroh explaining Zuko to a soldier (and not Zuko explaining himself to the Aang) shows how Zuko views the Avatar as an object/macguffin for his redemption, shows how he is searching for validation from his father but does not know it and only sees it as "regaining his honor," and shows the audience that Zuko needs to entirely rethink his identity/go through a journey to redeem himself that will not be solved by those soldiers. Avatar's method also shows how Iroh sees Zuko's pain while Zuko doesn't really know what he wants. Due to this simple difference in who tells the story Heroaca builds a substantial problem with a quick solution for a character who has established his identity and needs to become more comfortable in it, while Avatar builds a monumental identity issue for a character that requires seasons worth of development to solve.
See how this approach is more informative/useful/nonflammable?

the purpose of the video wasn't to make a direct comparison between bnha and avatar, he was explaining how the character development was pulled off well while using avatar as a point of relation akin to something like "hey, these two things are similar, that's fun". If he was truly doing a comparison between the two then he would have gone more in depth with the detail from how Zuko's development goes in avatar. The fact that the video title says ft avatar instead of bnha/avatar comparison should be evidence enough that it's not a comparison about which is better but rather an analysis about how it was pulled off and why it works so well.

Zuko on the other hand connects better than anyone else because he doesn't just give you a glimps into his life. You experience his pain, struggle and growth right along side him. Chazoo it might be harder to make an original backstory, but it’s still possible. Especially with characters with all kinds of powers. The abusive dad-loving mom trope is common, and I can’t say how often I’ve seen it. But nothing is really added to MHA’s version of it other than quirks. And I don’t really feel bad for Todoroki. My love and sympathy ends for him after the fact he’s probably the best looking person throughout the series. He doesn’t really have emotional turmoil or a real reason for me to cry over him. He’s just edgy and can’t get over himself sometimes.

    • @solitas5636

I mean, when your forced to stay away from all your siblings because your father said their not to be meddled with, and soon your mother becomes insane because your father is too abusive, and then she says your left side is unbearable and pours boiling water on your face, and then you’d have to love your life alone, with the only person you trusted and loved was split away from you, and you having to go through immense pain and loneliness for years until you’re able to leave that damned place you call a home. That’s kinda sad, and there’s no way you can’t say that’s sad, it may be unoriginal, but it’s still sad as fuck, I have a tip, out yourself in Todoroki’s shoes when she was a child, also known as empathy.

    I would say Zuko's was done better...would.
The problem is that technically IcyHot's character development/story isn't really finished yet so it wouldn't be fair to compare what we've seen so far to the entirety of Zuko's character arc through the entire Avatar series...
I'd say in the end Zuko's will be better, but I have a bit of a bias in that I really hate the character design they went for with IcyHot. His character is supposed to look 'cool' I guess, but he just looks stupid to me. It's like someone read a "Duality for dummies" book and based his physical appearance off that.

I'm one who prefers the slower development of Zuko's backstory, but your absolutely right about the delivery of the burn exposition. At the end of The Storm I could honestly care less about Zuko's relationship with his crew, who are less than minor characters and never touched on again, but with Todoroki telling Deku telling the story mattered to more than just the viewer and actually fueled future character relationships in a meaningful way.

I don't know that I'd say that MHA handled Todoroki BETTER than TLA handled Zuko. I think they took two very different approaches to their characters, and both did their respective approaches very well.
Zuko was intended to be a slow burn. We were supposed to learn more and more about him as time goes on until he very gradually became a sympathetic character. As we learned about him, Zuko would likewise learn about himself, and these things would slowly build until his betrayal as he joins the avatar's side.
Todoroki, on the other hand, was supposed to be a quick change. They didn't have a lot of time for him and had to make do with what they had. This was, however, doable: the most noticeable difference between the two being that Todoroki was never a villain, only a rival, and he never had any personal vendetta against Deku... I mean you might say that Deku's relationship with All Might created a personal vendetta, and you would be sort of right, but I don't think it's really animosity so much as a spark for rivalry (see Bakugo to understand what I mean.)
Todoroki could be afforded a quick change, since he was never evil or anything. It's not like they're trying to get the audience to see a villain as sympathetic, understandable, AND give them a reasonable reason to turn PLUS a redemption arc, a la Zuko. If they handled Zuko the same way they handled Todoroki, it wouldn't have worked at all given Zuko's inherent opposition to the heroes on every ground at the start of the series. Likewise, handling Todoroki like Zuko wouldn't have worked because it would have dragged on way too long, and made a character that really wasn't doing anything wrong or bad have way too much time to redeem himself, despite not really needing to be "redeemed" in the first place.

    So.
    I love them both.
They have crazily different stories despite so many similarities. Zukos character arc, instead of his emotional awakening at the end of season two, it was his lowest point. Todoroki learns to trust someone and through that he realizes he’s his own person. Both end in them letting go of pent up anger.
They’re equally impactful in different way, everyone calm down aren’t they both precious children?

I do definitely believe that Todoroki was based on Zuko, this is interesting because ATLA was hated severely in Japan (because of the fire nation and the parallels to Japan's war crimes, also season 3 didn't even get dubbed in Japanese due to how much it was hated) whereas Korra is adored and is a cult classic~
