    One of the main reasons to consider the Ford F-150 PowerBoost as an all-around, daily driver truck is its potential fuel economy, thanks to its hybrid powertrain. But how well does it actually work in the real world? Can you achieve some considerable savings over getting a conventional 3.5-liter EcoBoost? Andre covers his fuel economy after a full year of ownership!

    I think more people need to do the math before getting too wrapped up in worrying about mileage. People talking about trading their truck to save a couple mpg which calculates approximately to around $3-$400 a year with $4 gas with the average driver. Which would obviously be less if gas goes back down. Don’t spend $15k or more on a new truck to save $4k and justify by saying you’re saving so much $ on gas….just admit you want a new truck.

    The biggest advantage I can see with the Hybrid is having a built-in battery and generator for a travel trailer. If you're going to do a lot of off-grid camping hauling generator and fuel for it, just being able to use the truck for your power needs is a big plus. I would love to see someone do a Hybrid in the Heavy Duty segment with a diesel. It would be a great truck for people who live full time in a camper.

    I just took my 2 month old powerboost on a road trip from southern CA to almost the Oregon border around 1700 miles. Conditions were pretty ideal. Hot, low wind and mostly flat. I ended up getting right about 23 MPG overall, as advertised. This was with my wife and 2 younger boys and about 500 lbs of stuff in the bed covered with a hard tonneau cover. I was pretty happy with that.

    I finally went from a V8 5.4l triton 4x4 to the 2.7l ecoboost 4x4, and I love it. I live in SW Oklahoma and drive all over north Texas and Oklahoma, and so far I actually get the mileage that was posted on the sticker, if I’m pushing into the crazy wind it gets couple miles lower doing 75-80 mph, but with the wind pushing me I get what it says sometimes a little better, except when I’m pulling my pontoon boat (which is like dragging a deployed parachute) I get around 7-9 mpg doing 60-70 mph which I’m fine with. When I am doing just nice easy country highway driving, usually at 63-67 or 53-57 MPH, I am getting 22-24 mpg in my XLT with the 5.5' bed and a tonneau cover. But if I drive 70 or 80 MPH, then MPG drops a bunch more, down to 19 or so. I always use 87 octane gas. Overall, having got the truck in late October, driving through the winter with tires aired down a bit for traction, my total is 19.9 mpg. I am seeing MPG go up since I aired up the tires last week.
    Aall that being said, MPG isn't the reason I got it. Being able to idle with the engine off, or stop and go when I pick my daughter up from school, with no exhaust, is more important to me. Also, when working on things outside, I can keep it in Generator mode and be running a refrigerator or tools, and it only comes on for about 2 minutes an hour to recharge the engine. I plan on doing that when camping this summer.
    I am also glad that I won't have the sides of my truck rusting away like so many drivers do here in Wisconsin, from the salt on the roads. Aluminum siding = peace of mind there. But I did have the undercoating put on mine, due to Ford's track record with rusting undercarriage from the moment leaves the factory.
    Lastly, sometimes on an empty road or when getting on the freeway, it is fun to just floor it and feel the punch of speed with the e motor and the turbos!
    So I think there is more to it than just the numbers. For someone needing best freeway driver, Silverado would probably be better. A plug-in hybrid truck would be my ideal I think, as wouldn't worry about running out of charge when camping, but could drive pretty much just on electric for daily driving.
    Either way, I am polluting significantly less than I was driving my Ram 1500, and that is the most important to me.
    And, as the last poster noted, I wanted a new truck!

Although city driving is very bad, as we all drive too aggressive to get any real benefit from the electric side. The best ive seen mpg-wise was 26-27 while drafting a semi at 70mph. For now the Hybrid F150 in Lariat trim with the tow package trim AND the 7200 WATT Powerboost option is the BEST DEAL out there for ANY truck! You get incredible bed payload, great towing and that VERY NICE worksite/campsite/home-use capable on-board generator! No other truck can do that!
      I would PERSONALLY like the PLATINUM or LIMITED edition trim but it's getting up there in price when you get all those interior luxury niceties loaded on-board! The Lariat Edition has the best balance of price vs utility! If you want More Luxury but not the massive price tag of a PLATINUM or LIMITED edition, the King Ranch is your better bet.
      Out of the RAM 1500, CHEVY/GMC 1500, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan truck series, the OVERALL BEST BALANCE between interior/exterior features, towing/bed capacity AND decent price point is the Ford F150 Lariat Trim level with 7200 watts Powerboost and the towing package option. You get a LOT of truck for your money!
      You can then spend the money you save on a nice thick Aftermarket-applied Line-X branded Heat and UV resistant coating for the full underbody, all wheel wells, engine bay walls and an extra layer of bed liner coating which will protect your investment. I would also spend $2000 USD to get a heavy duty front bumper and bush bar (coated entirely with Line-X) that has an onboard 16,000 lbs winch and add in TWO 20 Gallon (75 litre) Jerry Cans to ensure LOOOOOONG driving range between fill-ups!

    A lot of it can be linked to your commute. I recently got rid of my '15 Ecodiesel with a 3:55 ratio 4x4 due to my new longer commute and it hated it 18 mpg, but when I lived in Co 22.5-25 mpg all day. Was $130 a week and thankfully before the $5 gallon diesel arrived or it would be nearly $200 a week. Even my "long term rental" '22 Elantra does 33-38 mpg rated at 41 mpg hwy which is 90% of my driving still cost me $70 a week now. I didn't need my truck every day of the week like some do so get it if you can't do this, but also remember it isn't worth trading in for 2-4 mpg better and starting all over in a new loan for $15 a week. I do 85 miles just on my commute closer to 100 or more daily for runaround and errands. If you want a new truck just wait for them to catch up production and get a discount.

This truck is beautiful inside and out, LOTS of power and pep for this little turbo engine, and the gas mileage is the best I've ever had with any vehicle - even my wife's Kia Sorento. A tank of gas will cost me around $250'ish (in Canada), and will last me IF I push it for 4-5 weeks, compared to my Atlas, this is huge considering I was filling up every week (about $90 at the time) this is a daily driver -- grocery shopping//trips//family dinners//kid activities//work etc.. etc.. I highly recommend this engine if you're looking for a truck that doesn't need a lot of towing power.

      If the towing and payload meet your needs, the 2.7 is the best 1/2 ton truck engine on the market in my opinion. Absolutely love mine. But make no mistake, what it can tow, it tows better than my old 5.4 did or the current 5.0. Can't beat the low end torque of a turbo when you're hauling. Ford handicaps it with a light duty rear axle for better economy and cost savings. After owning it for 5 years now I am convinced it could otherwise haul much more than it's rated for.

THis truck is very powerful, torque is excellent so I am loving it, it does cost more than 2.7l but the 5-8k worth to my understanding. You have suggested premium octane, any specific reason or just better fule efficiency.

    • @that.schamp
      @that.schamp Před rokem

      @@buildingsalvage It depends entirely on the manufacturer's recommendation, because that recommendation is based on how they tuned the engine. For the F-150, the recommendation is 87. Using a higher Octane rating is unlikely to cause problems, but is usually a waste of money. And of course, you should avoid fuel with a lower Octane rating than the manufacturer recommends (ie 85) unless you have a carbureted engine at high altitude.
      That said, modern engines will often adjust their timing and/or fuel mixture based on sensed characteristics of the fuel, adjusting the vehicle performance to the fuel type. According to tests done by Car & Driver, the ecoboost engines are some of the best at this adaptability, with the 3.5L delivering an extra 20hp and 0.5mpg on 93. Which is very impressive - but totally not worth the cost under normal operating conditions. If you are towing near the limits of it's capacity, then you mind find some value in the extra performance.

My thoughts are, my Power Wagon on 35's gets 17-18 hwy, my old '14 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 V8 got 21 hwy, your hybrid gets mid 20's, honestly it doesn't really matter. The difference in mpg is negligible no matter what brand you go with, they're all very close ( go figure ), and there's no free lunch. So anyways, unless you're driving a million miles a year it really doesn't matter. Andre,
    On the previous Gen of F150 ('15-'20) there is a way to correct the fuel mileage estimate (lie-o-meter). The vehicle can be put in "engineering" mode and the correction can be made. There are many videos on CZcams in reference to this.
    That being said, I have no idea if this applies to the current generation.
    Just a thought. Otherwise, great video as always.

    • @JuanMartinez-gu8sh
      @JuanMartinez-gu8sh Před 2 lety

      It does. Just a slightly different way to access the engineering mode. Hold the OK button on wheel for 5 seconds, then apply brakes and start truck while continuing to hold both. The dash should go into engineering mode. Use arrow keys to cycle through different screens until you arrive at AFE Bias. Stock is always 1000/xxx. calculate new number by dividing your actual (hand calculated) mpg by what the dash mpg reads. Every truck is different, depending on gear ratio, tire diameter, and even how the computer has 'learned' your style of driving. My AFE bias is 963 which took a few fill-ups to calibrate. HINT: Do your calculations and check your dash numbers BEFORE resetting to zero. If you need to tweak it, make your changes and it will change what your current dash readings are. That will help you know you are going in the right direction. E.g. dash says you got 22.8 but the math says 22.3, adjust your bias a few numbers down (about 3-5) and check the dash. It's never perfect but pretty darn close. Do this a few fill-ups and you will be within .2-.3 mpg all the time.

    Andre, spaciba for that long term update! I have an 18 F-150 3.5 ecoboost with 3:21 gear ratio, and I love this vehicle. I live in Wyoming, so it is all open road and small town driving. Mine usually get's 20.5 to 21.5 on the highway depending on wind and whether It's winter or summer gas. I usually get @ 19 around town. I was really interested in what you were getting, as my highway mileage is almost the same as you get. I never use premium, always 87 octane. I don't tow much, but the one time I drove to Longmont and picked up a 22' camper trailer, I only got @ 8mpg going back to Casper with the usual wind. So I have been wondering about upgrading to a new truck in the next year or two, but I can't see much advantage to the powerboost for me in terms of mileage and greater cost to have it. And I can't see any advantage to the new hybrid Toyota as far as mileage is concerned either. Again, spaciba for that long term update.

    Andre, I like your truck. It’s simple, but has everything you could really need and want in a truck. 21mpg seems solid for something that size. That’s an expensive fill up, but it’s getting that way for everyone and every vehicle. My suv has a 24.5 gallon tank and needs premium too. It’s not too cheap to fill. Even a half tank is still $55-60. Fortunately, I get 24mpg on the highway. It’s a 2015 MB ML350 and actually gets pretty good gas mileage for the power it makes. I’m always impressed with it, considering how quick it is and for weighing in at 5,000 pounds with just me inside and a full tank. I still think you’re doing pretty good with the F150.

      You are right. I was stunned to find this out in my thermodynamics class in college that higher octane gas does you no good if the design of the engine can handle lower octane. From what I understand you only need high octane when you have an engine with high compression ratio. The gas explodes near the end of the compression stroke and to avoid that you use higher octane gas, without it you get engine knocking. I never bought premium after that and I avoid cars that require it.
