    What’s goin’ on people? Mark from DCAR back with another review video. Today I am doing a 2-year ownership review of my own personal 1990 Mazda MX-5 Miata, otherwise known as the "NA" Miata. I give you a full tour, show you all of the in-&-outs, explain the few yet still features, and then I take it for an absolutely righteous rip!
    I also explain how at first, I wasn't a huge fan of this car... But then, I had the privilege and pleasure of taking it on many spirited drives on tight, curvy back roads. Now that I have thoroughly enjoyed this sports car legend on roads where it belongs, my opinions have certainly changed...

    It's recommended to unzip the rear PVC window window panel so that it lies flat, before lowering the roof. This prevents it from creasing and cracking over time. Nice looking car BTW 👍

      OMG! That is brilliant!!! I wish I knew that! I’m going to try that out when I get home from work today. The previous owner must not have known that either, because he never told me anything like that. Thanks for letting me know! Knowing that would’ve significantly helped during the times when I left the top down for an extended period of time and it got kind of creased and it was hard to put back up.

      @@DoubleClutchAutoReviews My pleasure. Just remember to unlatch the hood and crack it open an inch first, in order to release the tension on the zipper. Also, it's better to store the car with the hood raised. This helps prevent the material cracking and tearing down the line. I have a very early 1989 Mazda Eunos (MX5) I've owned for 11 years, here in the UK.

    Nice car. I have a '97 and I love it. I'd recommend you check your alignment and suspension components and tires. That car should go down the highway without any shimmy or shake. The little amount of money you spend to fix that will be well spent. You can drive that thing for another 30 years. Happy motoring....

    My experience was similar to yours. I was looking to learn engine repair, and wanted a project car that would be inexpensive to make mistakes on. The only reason I bought a Miata was because I read it was easy to take apart the engine. Nothing todo with the driving experience or styling. My goal was to buy it, take stuff apart, maybe fix some things and sell it off for my REAL project car.
    Then I drove it on a nice day with the top down. Then I whipped it around a few corners. Then I couldn't stop smiling, and still own it three years later. Sure it makes no power, looks like a metal jelly bean with eyes and screams at highway speeds: that's all part of the charm. It makes the whole experience hilarious. I won't be selling off my bean anytime soon.
    Bonus points: the "cute little face" makes it much more wife/girlfriend friendly than more aggressively styled cars.

      That is awesome! I’m really happy you love “your bean” hahaha it really is a great car for tinkering willy-nilly, AND for driving spiritedly!
      That’s a very funny point you make though. I totally agree with your mindset that that would be the likely case most of the time. However, it’s very ironic that my girlfriend feels the complete opposite way! She is also definitely not a girl that’s into cute or tiny things. Which she would prefer is a big fancy truck, In particular a late model F-150 King Ranch, or a Tundra 1794 Edition. Nonetheless, no one can deny how fun it is to carve corners in this car with the top down on a beautiful day!

    Took my ‘92 for a 10 hour road trip (both ways each)
    And it was absolutely amazing, never had any issues, was awesome to drive, my sister came with me and she agreed that it was a great ride. It’s a true testament to how reliable these machines really are.

    Great video, Mark, I didn't realize how simple and clean your miata is. The condition of it looks perfect from the inside and out. Even the seats aren't even ripped which is awesome

      Agree u don't see them clean anymore , mine was clapped when I bought it to restore n mod but that y I got one that was not nice , so I did not mess up a mint model.. peace and love brotha

      That’s awesome! That is actually really low miles too. I bought mine with about 140k lol. I’ve seen some for sale lower than yours, but people are asking 20 to 30k at that mileage… Nonetheless, enjoy my friend! It is an awesome weekend warrior.       It certainly is! Timeless I would say. I’m very happy I bought this car when I did. It has been so much fun! It also has been really reliable too. It truly has been a great car to own.
      If I had to have a critique, I just wish that the car had more power, and felt tighter/more solid at times. However, I know that can be fixed with some proper upgrades. One day, I would potentially love to fully go through the car and upgrade the wheels, tires, suspension, brakes, bushings, bracing, and potentially even add forced induction or an engine swap too! I know I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but that would be a dream build! It would make this timeless classic also into a corner carving monster!

      @@DoubleClutchAutoReviews some great ideas there. Id keep the original engine as the distribution and short gear ratios are perfect for the car. Its perfection. Hit the twisty roads and you will have a huge grin! Dont ever sell it! Awesome car!

      @@zooks3894 I hear you mate! As of right now, I am certainly not selling it, and I will most likely be keeping it stock for a long time. I may want to do some things eventually, but as it is right now it really is a great car. The only things that I can see myself most likely doing in the future are wheels, tires, suspension, and bracing. I feel like that would be all the car needs to really liven up where it truly belongs, on a twisty back road!!     Great vid fam got cpl things tho 1 the mocho guys u talk of i lobe blowing there doors off in my 91 miata (sleeper lol) and 2 the hey issues I was able to solve with 205 tires and lowered the car but thats not for everyone 😅 otherwise great vid bro and also I agree a roll bar is best safety thing u can do to miata ... peace n love bro keep it rad stay safe and build on l8z

    The shake at speed is the tires, if you still have this car try and find a set of the 15” stock wheels because the tire selection on 14” wheels is horrible unless you want to import them from overseas! The 5 spokes and the 95 m edition BBS RZs pop up on redline auto parts every now and then if you are interested. The key is to get lightweight wheels whatever you do! Miatas hate heavy wheels! Also if you want to fit in there better and keep the airbag supermiata has a spacer for stock steering wheels. Its one of the best mods you can do if your knees want to be where the wheel is! I stuck an NB steering wheel on mine because I prefer the thicker wheel, if you have the spacer you don’t need to drill holes in the back of the wheel for the clock spring so thats nice.

      @@Theweouthereforrealclub- I really appreciate the advice! And you are absolutely right about the shaking. Want to know why I know you’re right? And the craziest part is that this literally happened to me just about two weeks ago; longgggg after I filmed and posted this review on my Miata…
      I was driving it on a good clip the highway to actually meet a friend and film his beautiful fully customized rebuilt M3 Comp (video will be posted probably later this month or August) and I noticed on the way up in the morning that I had a pretty significant shake (way worse then this video) at around 70 ish MPH. It kind of came and went, so I didn’t think anything of it. I carried on with my day, filmed the car, my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and I headed home.
      On the way home, it started off that I was cruising in the passing lane with no problems. Suddenly, I get some really bad shaking between 60 to 65 MPH. I start to worry a little bit… Then I noticed that it starts to get really bad even between 30 and 40. I’m starting to think that this is not good. It got to the point where I could barely keep the car under the control it was so bad.
      I pulled over multiple times, checked my tires, and they all had air in them. I even pulled into an empty parking lot and “ghost rode the whip” very slowly just to see if one of my wheels was wobbling like crazy as if I busted a wheel bearing or a tie rod or something like that. I really had no idea what was going on.
      I kept going very carefully, and I make it to about 5 mins away from home on 1.5 hour+ drive, when suddenly I hear a “phamp phamp phamp phamp” and that’s when I go, “Yep, that was my tire the whole time.” I pull over, try to change it myself, realize that my tire iron I had in there (that came with the car) didn’t fit the lug nuts properly. Thankfully, the first person‘s door I knocked on happily came out with his 2 young kids and helped me get the tire on with some of their tools. Couldn’t have thanked them enough. Next day, I was at Town Fair Tire!
      I ended up just getting some Falken Sincera all seasons because it was kind of an emergency, and I needed to drive the car for the next several days. Obviously, the stock wheels needed a new set very desperately anyway. They seem to perform OK so far. I plan on getting a set of 15” aftermarket wheels eventually though. When that day comes, I will definitely get a set of lightweight wheels with a good set of summer/performance tires to really bring out the best of that car!

    Don’t know what it is but I have a soft spot for little cars and pretty much all things Jdm, I’ve personally got a 1990 eunos roadster which is the Japanese version and it’s been a great car for the year I have owned it and think it will be one of those cars that I will never sell and am thinking of going turbo eventually. Yours looks great, not many nice ones around now but I’m proud to say I own an original tidy example… for now.

      Thanks so much! By the looks of your profile pic, yours doesn't look to shabby either! Hahah and same here my friend. It really is a fun car. I'm hoping to keep mine indefinitely, and I'm proud of it being mostly original too. However, I do consider the fact that mine isn't a garage queen with 30k-or-less mile example either. It's had 3 owners including me, it's had a respray, 145k on the clock, and I drive it spiritedly every time I take it out lolll
      Part of me wants to just keep it stock for the nostalgia value and fear of ruining it. However, if I have the proper funds and inclination, I would absolutely love to go full send on this car with a high quality track-spec build one day; engine swap (probably a high-revving 2.0L Honda motor) with a turbo making maybe between 350-450 wheel, full suspension including coilovers, sway bars/end links, bracing, rollbar + seats with harnesses, wheels/tires, big brakes, LSD, the whole 9... Another dream of mine would be to get (in addition to keeping the Miata) one of my favorite JDM cars ever, a 1999 S15/200SX, and then maybe eventually throwing in a RB26 or even a 2JZ engine swap into that!

    invest in some coilovers,front and rear sway bars,good endlinks,some 18's tyres...that takes the mx5 to the next level

      I 100% agree! Certainly one day... She's going to be kind of tucked away in a semi-storage situation for a little while because I plan on moving to Florida from Mass very soon. However, when I can figure out how to keep/store it properly wherever I end up, I am considering doing a full-blown build with this car. First and foremost would be pretty much everything you just mentioned, and then eventually an engine swap + an LSD. I don't know if I would go with 18 inch wheels though... I feel like I would stick with 14s, maybe go up to 15s or 16s, but I'm not sure yet. Thanks for watching the review though, and I hope you enjoyed it!       @@DoubleClutchAutoReviews 15's are the way to go. More tires choices, not much available in 14 inch wheels. I got a 92 last year and wnt with 15's, 205 X50. I put Koning yellow shocks and Flyin Miata lowering springs instead of coilovers. Dropped the car about 3/4 inch, nothing absurd. Really helped the handling and made it even better. Then I bought my son a bone stock 91 with on it. He plans to keep it that way.

    Yeah, the manufacturers don't do manuals any more.
    My first car was a chevette. I want a small car with a manual transmission again.
    Probably going to get an NB2, but if I can find a good deal, an NA has what I need.

      I know!! Their production numbers are dwindling down ever so slightly day-by-day as we speak. It's quite unfortunate, but that's just the way that the car market is going these days! Practically no one is buying manuals new, so the manufacturers are not making money, and they figure it's better to just slowly stop making them. That's why I feel like it is SO important for us enthusiasts to keep the spirit alive of what a true sports car should be.
      I think any Miata really is an EXCELLENT platform for you if you want a small, super fun roadster with a MT. To be honest, the best deals might be on the NC, as it's the least popular Miata. However, that doesn't mean it's a bad car. It's heavier, and a little more bloated, but it still stays true to it's MX-5 badge. I recommend looking at pretty much all generations of Miatas in your area. They all have their own unique quirks with something great to offer. Best of luck in the search!

    Ok so you dont throwback the top because its "reckless" so you're saying karate chopping it is better!? lmaooooo that was funny. It looks like a super fun little car, I didnt expect the horn to sound like that. I remember your detailing video about the water splash. Seeing the part with the twisties at the end just ripping thru the forest is sooooo cool. It looks so satisfying. And shoutout for taking it out to the castle/church! Amazing setting

      And yes, lmaooo I'm sure you will understand my reasoning behind that because if I just throw the top back without karate chopping it, it will fold and crease in places unevenly. It wont fold down as tightly as it should, and then it looks messed up with a weird crease or two when I put the top back up. This might be because this isn't the original soft top.
      Funny story... The former owner of the Miata, my old Chief, now retired, had Dom Corey (the guy that does upholstery professionally and let me review his super sweet 1930 Buick if you remember that video) install this new top when the old one started leaking. The top works great though and has held up very well, I just need to do that so it folds the right way. Tim, the former owner/my old Chief showed me that trick himself! Hahah

      And absolutely. All I can say is I am so glad I didn't just sell the car quickly. I am very lucky to have been able to thoroughly enjoy this car after experiencing how fun it is on roads like that. I'm also very glad you liked that part! I was a little worried how the voice-over monologue style was going to be, but if you thought it was cool to watch, then I am happy with that!
      Those are some the best roads around here. Look up Myles Standish State Forest if you would like! Truly spectacular roads for a car like this, and motorcycles as well!
      What's funny is most of this footage was filmed at multiple different points in time. The main part of me walking around the car was filmed in early March of last year! The GoPro driving footage was filmed last Friday! Lol
      I don't why this took so long to finish... I kinda just got caught up with other stuff, but I am happy I finally finished it. This car deserved a proper review!
      And yes, the horn is absolutely hysterical, isn't it?! I find it so puny, yet still so funny and fitting for this car. Thanks as always for watching and commenting bud, and happy early b-day!!!!

    Hey man, just wondering how tall you are. I’m curious because I am thinking about buying a Miata as my first car but I am worried that it will be a small fit for me. I am 6 ft tall. Thanks!

      Not a problem! I am also 6ft, and I weigh around 200 lb. Unless you weigh 275+ lb, I think you would fit in one just fine. The guy I bought it from, who is also my former Fire Chief actually was around 6’ 2” and 260 lb. Surprisingly, even he fit in it! Sure, he squeezed, but he made it work. The best advice is to just sit in one, and test drive it yourself! I always recommend test driving a car before buying it, because you will never know if you like it or not until you do.

    wheels should be balanced at specialty shop, night and day difference. (look for a Hunter balancer)

    The NC PRHT is the best series. More refined, better engine and better everything. I am on my fourth NC. I have driven the NA and NB and will never own one.

      Do you own an NC? It's so funny that you say that. A lot of people actually say the NC is the worst generation. However, I think people give it a lot more flack than it deserves. It is the heaviest/biggest of the Miatas, but it is still an awesome driver’s car in my opinion. If you own/owned a Miata yourself, tell me more about it!

      Hello there! I feel like the Miata can be not just a great first car, but one of the best first cars. Yet, that’s only if you consider the following to make sure that it’s right for you… Please keep in mind though, this is my own personal advice, and some people will certainly think differently. However, I have owned 6 different vehicles over the last 14 years, and this is my experience that I have gained.
      First and foremost, you absolutely want to do your best to find one that’s not necessarily in perfect cosmetic shape, but in excellent, if not damn near perfect mechanical shape. It’s your first car, so there’s a very slim chance that you won’t have a nick, a scratch, a dent, a scrape ir all of the above while you’re learning how to drive in the first 2 years. It happens to the best of us, and to all of us, so don’t worry about it.
      Focus on finding one that runs extremely well, doesn’t overheat, blow any smoke, or leak any fluid from anywhere. You do not want your first car to be a reliability headache. Unless you have a handy dad, or some good buds that will definitely help you fix up a project, you do not want a first car that’s going to give you nothing but problems. Nothing is more annoying than trying to hit the open road as a young lad/lass and you can’t because something is broken on your only car.
      Secondly, you have to consider what you plan on using your first car for. Are you going to be doing a really long commute back-and-forth to school, or a job? Are you also going to want to be able to take more than one friend with you for a ride? Are you going to ever need to be able to transport large items, or even tow anything? Owning a Miata is not necessarily conducive for all of those things. It’s not the most comfortable car on the highway for very long rides, and storage/cargo space is extremely minimal.
      However, don’t let all of that scare you away. If you have the right mindset, and plan on using the Miata for what it was built for, it could be an absolutely fantastic first car. Are you a driving/sports car enthusiast that wants to have a FANTASTIC first platform to learn how to drive a true analog manual RWD car? You can drive this car very spiritually in tight corners, and it’s also forgiving enough for a less experienced driver because of its very low HP. Do you wanna classic car that will get tons of positive attention at the gas pump and at car meets? Do you want a car that you can make simple starter content with and build up your own social media following? Do you want a car that you can modify very easily and learn how to work on cars, or just simply spiff up and keep in great condition that will appreciate in value over time? Then the Miata can be a great first car for you!
      Sorry, I decided to write an essay, but I feel like that was a great question that should’ve been answered properly. I hope that helps, and good luck with Miata hunting!     What is the highest speed this car has reached?

      On a closed course, of course lol I’ve gotten it up to 115. However, at that speed, the engine was screaming at about 5000 RPM and it did not feel stable or comfortable at all. My Miata can probably use some new tires, wheel balancing, and an alignment though. However, even with all of that, I don’t think this car could get past 125. I would say 120 at best without any performance mods.

Although, I will tell you that I bought it from my old boss who is a trustworthy older gentleman that took good care of it and drove it lightly compared to your typically Miata owner. I also bought it right before all of the price hikes on every used car, especially Miatas, so I feel like I got a steal on this bad Larry. 😉
