I think the thing being missed here is that the book of Abraham is still being considered scripture. It’s been proven a hoax.

This is one of the BEST explanations of the “curse” that I have ever heard! The mark of the skin may have been an identifier for distinction, but the mark is NOT the curse, the loss of authority of the priesthood is the curse.
You must have not read the book fully. If the mark " skin of darkness" was removed when the people because righteous how is that skin of darkness not a curse?

You can't logically separate the mark from the curse, because it's simply another attribute to the curse. Wisdom of the wise and trying to make everyone feel warm and fuzzy inside is the reason this wokism is taking us over.
@@holyroller4391 I couldn’t agree more that wokeism is a HUGE issue. But like it’s pointed out here, are we using OUR definition of cursed? Or God’s? According to this explanation the definition is loss of the priesthood line and inheritance. The Church has stated that race is irrelevant. Church membership records do not notate race. So if we believe that the prophet when speaking in this capacity is declaring that it’s not about race, will you sustain it? And as a black member of the Church, wouldn’t it hurt to feel like you were “cursed” by something you cannot control? This truth shared here speaks to my soul and when applied to other examples of cursing both ancient and modern(look up the curse on Kirtland) this rings true!
@@holyroller4391 I completely agree that wokeism is a HUGE problem. However, if we believe our prophet to be the mouthpiece of the Lord, and they say that it’s not about race, do you believe it? Do you sustain this declaration? If so, we must let it go. The church membership records DO NOT record race. It is irrelevant. Can you empathize with a colored person of any kind who might struggle because the feel that they are “cursed” because of nothing but the way they were designed? I would think that would be painful. But if you apply GOD’s definition as it is outlined here…It makes complete sense. If the curse is the loss of the priesthood and inheritance - it should apply to both scriptural AND modern day examples. Go find out what the Kirtland curse was…and apply this definition, it’s perfect. A curse defined only by color doesn’t apply or make sense. We oftentimes are misled when we apply modern definitions to times past, often distorting the original meaning…this is prevalent today as the world applies MODERN definitions to yesterday’s cultures. I invite you to apply this definition elsewhere and you’ll have eyes to see.

I think a lot of people have missed the point of this discussion, that when we keep our covenants we and our posterity are blessed and when the covenants are broken we are cursed by the separation that creates between us and God unless we find a way to repent and once again receive the blessings of the gospel in our families. That blessing or cursing has to do with our faithfulness individually and as families, not our looks, and though people may have had specific looks, the blessing and cursing is related to faithfulness. I thought it was an absolutely amazing discussion.
A curse is more like a consequence. When Samuel predicted that king David’s sin would have an effect on his posterity, it wasn’t God or Samuel chanting some magical curse on him. He was just telling him that because he screwed up, family drama would inevitably come.
No a curse is judgment from God.
I have been scripture journaling for several years now, the second Topic the Holy Spirit told me to feast upon was the abrahamic covenant, I research on line what the Jews saw as the main points of the Abrahamic Covenant are, this is what I learned

3. The gift of the Holy Spirit
4. Promised land

17:00 I have been thinking on this so much. When people leave the Church, they lose out on the rich blessings of the gospel for their kids. And then their kids often don’t learn the lessons of good morals the Church teaches.

Yes. That is true. My grandparents left the Church and my dad and his siblings did not get raised in the Church. It made a huge difference in their lives. My cousins on that side of the family had lots of problems and this was passed to the grandchildren also - very big things. I often ask myself why they didn't think this through more when they stopped going to Church.

In fact, LGBT+ members of the church are more protected from suicide and depression by membership in the than the LGBT+ population in general. This data was researched at BYU, but Bowling Green University in Ohio affirmed that the research is scientific and correct (Bowling Green is not LDS affiliated in the slightest). What you're doing is not only false, but insulting.
Wow. This really brought together a lot of puzzle pieces that have been stored in the back of my brain. Everything he said was things i already knew, but he just clicked then into place.
Stephen, when you were talking about the prodigal son, at around 39:37, you mention how the moment the prodigal son returned his father puts a *robe on him. I've never thought of this before but in the context of the priesthood being connected to inheritance it occurred to me that this robe may be symbolic of the robes of the priesthood, especially in the context of what you were just talking about with the importance of doing temple work. (If they repent, are they not brought back into the family of God and have their rights and priesthood restored? (Thinking about what happens when someone who is excommunicated repents as well))
Think of the robe as a covering as well. What does the word atonement mean? “To cover”. All very symbolic and powerful if we have eyes to see.

This makes so much sense to me, especially around the concept of inheritance and how children can be ‘born in the Covenant,’ and they inherit the blessings of the Abrahamic Covenant. However, the children still need to live worthily and go onto make those covenants with the Savior on their own. Elevates the importance of Family History for me. Thank you for the discussion!
Remember that perfection in the scriptures also connotates completeness. Therefore, when the scriptures say we cannot be perfected without our ancestors, that's because the work is incomplete, our family is incomplete and our covenant is not fully fulfilled. The scriptures also say that one day everyone will obey. Until that day the work of creation of which we are a part is ongoing in us (we are not complete / finished / perfect). Father's work is to lift us up and ennable us with all of His power that we can responsibly attain. Joining Him in His work (immortality and eternal life of man) is that celestial goal of eternal inheritance. We become the close family / kin of God and do the family's work.
This episode started off a little slow for me and then at the 40min mark it was like “and boom goes the dynamite”. The Golden Corral iron skillet to the head moment for me as to the reason we do temple work makes so much more sense to me now and has more meaning. Thanks bro as always.

This approach and discussion is very important for every generation of Latter-day Saints right now. When we believe functionally that all are alike unto God, we see more clearly and love more deeply.

I liked how you discussed inheritance somewhere within the first ten minutes. I was taught inheritance growing up, specifically of things like the priesthood and the blessings of the new and everlasting covenant. My father wasn’t a member when I was a child, so I didn’t receive it through him even in ordination, but I inherited all those blessings through my mother and her father, and as I came of age it was then ordained as well. The same framing could have applied with a member father, but I think inheritance is not necessarily what I would have been taught if I had not had a mixed-faith household.
Additionally, I find this as a priesthood power for sisters; they pass on priesthood directly, always.

I am so grateful for covenants and promises. We are all cursed through the great apostasy. Joseph Smith Jr. going into the the Sacred Grove to commune with the Lord was the first step to receiving our inheritance. Grateful for the temple and the covenants. I so desire to be a member of an eternal family. The Official Declaration of 1978 states that "every faithful, worthy man in the Church may receive the holy priesthood." Thank you for this discussion. I trust in God's plan for his children. We need to understand that his plan is just and he will make things right. We also need to remember we are accountable to God for our actions and unrighteous judgements of our fellow man.
Thanks for the way you explained inheritances anciently. My husband and I have talked about it as inheriting the priesthood and blessings of the covenants with God, not other things as well.

Mormon Yeshiva has a very clear understanding of what the skin of blackness means which ties in very nicely with covenants. Relates to the first garments made and given to Adam and Eve = costs of Skin. It the garment represents a covenant and becomes darkened? IE the skin becomes dark (which represents the covenant) it means a person is being cut off from the covenant. Not necessarily literally their pigmentation was changed
It’s talking about skin. I understand why people want to dance around this topic but it unequivocally is what is being said in the texts. A person can be righteous as an individual and still be claimed by the devil which is what the texts say.
Think of it like two different ranchers who have herds of cattle. They put their mark/brand on the cattle to indicate which ones they have legitimate claim on. Perhaps one of the cows gets out and breeds with the other ranchers bull, that calf will have the brand of the bull owner placed on the calf and expand his herd.

If your seed mixes sufficiently with a group that was cut off your seed over generations becomes the race of the other group. This is how genetics works. This is how races form over time to begin with. When a group is separated and in isolation they develop a different phenotype that adapts to their diet, culture, geography, behavior, etc.
So in the context of the BOM, if Nephites breakaway and keep mixing (marrying into the Lamanite family tree) with Lamanites they will eventually become indistinguishable from Lamanites and Vice Versa. Which is exactly what we read in the BOM.

My grandparents lived through the depression, so my parents were stressed and emotionally closed. I'm in counseling to make sure I don't pass that pain, that curse on to my children. It does make sense, and it's unjust now, but justice will come. It will come with the atonement and through my work.

I also teach and study ballet and music. We talk a lot about tradition and inheritance when we study these art forms. There is even a line of authority that we trace back to the first great teachers.
Everyone is invited to study, some will do better than others, some will choose not to continue. Nit as big a deal of course to quit piano as it is to "quit" the priesthood.

I agree. The holy ghost showed me that the word curse is like a negative, natural consequence, not the mystical connotation the world has given it. When Nephi took his people away from Laman and his clan, Laman lost access to the priesthood and the only scriptures they had, thus generations would go without that source of light and truth. Their skin was merely like a team jersey to let everyone know they had chosen spiritual darkness over light. But that meaning was for them, today it doesn't mean that at all.
A brilliant discussion on the understanding of curses. This appears to clarify why Nephi had to return for the plates and why Laban had ro be sacrificed; so there would be a documentable record of their rights to the priesthood.

This is a deep topic and when only points are considered that seem to be connected to it then our understanding is incomplete. An individual will need to learn the Gospel expansively, with depth and breadth, and as this process continues then certain points that don't appear at first to be connected with this topic will actually end up shedding light on it.

I wonder if the increasing disobedience to the Bible and other scripture regarding the nuclear family, male/female divinity, marriage being only between a man and a woman (summarized and reiterated in the inspired words in The Family Proclamation) and shying away from the preaching of solid truth in church will necessitate a loss of priesthood access for a certain section of western culture (that is seeking acceptance from Babylon) members as punishment.
What you speak of we lost in the 20th century already. Leaving God's laws is nothing new. You were born in a wicked generation so you were acclimated to wickedness already. But I assure you it was before your time. They didn't confer the priesthood for almost an entire generation. That's solidified it

The way I understood it was the “skin” spoken of was the initial covenant and covering given to Adam and Eve. When the Fathers had the covenant you are born into the covenant but if not cleansed or covered by Christ it remains unwashed. It may have been attributed or understood as skin color or culture, we adopted that view from Baptist fundamentalist views. Ultimately it is whether we have become washed and refined. It’s covenant over skin color.
Wow! This is really deep. We can’t take any of this for granted. Each of us needs to repent and keep the commandments and seal our family together in the temple. Am I understanding this correctly? This is quite profound. I need to revisit this episode seriously to understand what this means. Whew! I hope I’m getting this right. Wow! Wow!
We are all children of our Heavenly Father, just keep your covenant and bring you ancestor to be seal and restore the inheritance.

In ancient times, the line of Seth recieved the priesthood through the Patriarchal Order; in which order the priesthood was passed on through the concept of inheritance. Those recieving the priesthood thereby inherited a right to the priesthood. In our dispensation, any worthy male can convert and thereafter be ordained to the Melchizedek priesthood without a specific right to the priesthood through his lineage. However, the full blessings of the priesthood are not bestowed upon him untill he recieves the exalting ordinances of the Temple wherein he enters into the Patriarchal Order; and this, too, irrigardless of his not having a right to the priesthood through his lineage. One could say that an unendowed Elder or couples not sealed in the Temple have entered into a lesser order of the Melchizedek priesthood and not the fullness of it. But, once they partake of the Temple covenants, they enter into the Patriarchal Order of the priesthood. Why is it thus in our dispensation? Because we, though we be of Ephriam, are essentially gentiles being that our lineages are both untraceable and polluted. This is the only way we could be recieved into any order of priesthood. Now, to make our priesthood ordinations perfect, we must through vicarious ordinances restore our fathers to the priesthood and thus secure our right to the priesthood.
1 Nephi 14: 1-2, I think this applies here. The Lord speaking to Nephi tells him that the righteous gentiles on the land will be counted among Lehi's children.
Verse 2. And harden not their hearts against the Lamb of God, they shall be numbered among the seed of thy father; yea, they shall be numbered among the house of Israel; and they shall be a blessed people upon the promised land forever; they shall be no more brought down into captivity; and the house of Israel shall no more be confounded.
It seems to me that the 1st thing Lehi did when Nephi and brothers returned with the Plates of Laban was to search out his lineage finding out the Rich romises available to him and his posterity. He was happy to report that's he was a descendant of Joseph, descendant of Manasseh. It seemed to confirm what he already believed. That would be exciting to find out and would have definitely been worth "Laban's sacrifice".😮
A curse is a consequence for bad choices, a concept the modern generation fails to accept. All families, races, nations and or ethnic groups are born into consequences as part of fallings.
Great clarification of the question and solutions through obedience to covenants with Christ and His gospel restored in the fullness of times through His prophet Joseph Smith for the benefit of ALL who choose these blessings (the living and the dead).

My thought is could the curse of Cain or ham be the skin of blackness and back then if you were that "color" It was like as leprosy and you were shunned away. Clearly the lamanites were not black but a darker then Jewish skin So maybe it's our interpretation of color because unless you come from straight out of Nigeria or something, skin color is really not black. So why do we use that descriptive word. And as a Caucasian my skin color is not white. But I'm thrown in this category because of our worldly perspective 🫣
But with the new and everlasting covenant it's not by lineage per se. But anyone that is righteous and repents can receive the blessings of the priesthood.

A little correction, Jesus is not placed as the head of the human family. That position belongs to Adam, the Ancient of Days. From the teachings of the prophet Joseph Smith the Lord reveals,
"Adam delivers up his stewardship to Christ, that which was delivered to him as holding the keys of the universe, but retains his standing as head of the human family."
Now speaking of Abraham, in his blessing its two fold because it speaks of the literal seed and the adopted seed (through the gospel and the priesthood)
"10 And I will bless them through thy name; for as many as receive this Gospel shall be called after thy name, and shall be accounted thy seed, and shall rise up and bless thee, as their father;
11 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee; and in thee (that is, in thy Priesthood) and in thy seed (that is, thy Priesthood), for I give unto thee a promise that this right shall continue in thee, and in thy seed after thee (that is to say, the literal seed, or the seed of the body) shall all the families of the earth be blessed, even with the blessings of the Gospel, which are the blessings of salvation, even of life eternal. "
The priesthood was restored through lineage, for Joseph and Oliver where of the seed of Abraham and Joseph held the birthright as the firstborn, being of the tribe of Ephraim. It is through Abraham and his posterity and priesthood that all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
The sign of the curse was a skin of blackness or darkness. That's just a sign of a curse given but it isn't the curse. The curse unto Cain and his posterity was to not being able to hold the priesthood and officiate in its offices and administer the blessings thereof. But they could receive the ordinances of salvation and enter into the covenants from those who were worthy to officiate those sacred ordinances and covenants.

Is not the priesthood charged with service to others? Do you think that individuals considered slaves in early 1800 would also be expected to serve also thought priesthood? The curse of priesthood restrictions might curse on individuals by not allowing/expecting slaves to also be priesthood servants.

Joseph ordained a black man to the priesthood and I believe he was an apostle. After going to the salt Lake valley, he was never allowed to go to the temple with his wife even after she passed away. The reason the rules were changed is that the general authorities finally inquired of the Lord. They were all one in their wanting this to be changed. But until the leaders were all of one accord and asked…then they got the answer. We were weak saints and we as a people had to do the right thing. It was a stumbling block for me because I didn’t believe the racist narrative and always felt that it was wrong. But there were many in the church who came from the south who joined the church and came west. I think in the early days the church would have died out if they had not taken the stand they did. Because I am a descendent of those people I understood how racist they were, but even as a small child I knew it was not of God. Despite my grandmother’s racism she was a devoted follower of Christ and did have her eyes opened to the wrongness of it on her deathbed at 95. She has a giant posterity and through her ancestors I traced our beginnings to the Mayflower. My 12th great grandmother was the oldest living survivor of the Mayflower and through that line alone I am related to just about everyone!!!
Yes, I do believe many of us who came from people who believed they had the “inheritance” did also error and pass on false traditions of their fathers, such as some thinking they are covenant people and yet being un Christ like by being prejudiced to others because of the pigment of their skin.
We are all subject to error due to false traditions.

Perhaps Brigham was also a man who believed in false traditions of his day ( being prejudiced towards people with skin of color) and so that’s how that “ban” was perpetrated until 1978!
The prophet Joseph Smith DID NOT ban any man from the priesthood due to skin color.
Brigham Young did.
Certain prophets, if they made mistakes most likely relied on the arm of flesh instead of getting the true answers from God and Jesus.
They are not infallible.
Gods truth will still come forth in his due time even when working through man who IS NOT perfect and sees through a glass darkly. ( meaning not being able to see clearly due to false traditions)
B.Y. could have had some issues that were not pleasing in Gods sight, but could still bring about his works even in spite of imperfect and even sinful people.
And don’t we all fall prey to false traditions passed down from our fathers and thus we do error.

His name was Elijah Abel. Bruce Porter has an interesting video on the priesthood ban about him and the church Patriarch. Great theory, not sure I adopt it, but another strong plausible explanation for "WHY?", among a few other good ones.
Unfortunately, we don't realize that we're all cut off from the inheritance. We must all be adopted-in via the Gospel Doctrine. In our day, for us to judge anyone based on race is nonsensical because all races are lost. What happened during the days of Cain are not the same today. Someone cursed from having birthright priesthood via levitical bloodline is a different story than today. Jesus came and completed what he set out to do. We ALL must be adopted in. We need to stop viewing today's Christian Gospel through an Old Testament lens. Christ fulfilled the law entirely.

I think if we are to discuss the blessings of Jesus, we should understand that He is Eternal Life. He is the Eternal Spiritual Organism that we call God. This Eternal God serves us as our Creator and Redeemer. This spiritual organism is the Father, Word, and Holy Ghost which is one Holy Spirit in different functions (Creator, Co-Creator, and Heir). That is, Eternal Life is a Father-Mother-Offspring Spirit. The Holy Spirit is complete within Himself. When a believer is born again, he or she as a biological organism is born as a spiritual organism of, by, and through the Holy Spirit and is the heir of Eternal Life which is the blessing. To go deeper, Eternal Life comes from the Uncreated Spirit who is uniquely the God and Parent of Him. When we think of the triune attributes we have to think Consciousness, Imagination, and Energy. The Uncreated Consciousness (Spirit), Imagination (Soul), and Energy (Body) has Life within Himself and gave Life to His own Offspring Eternal Life. The Eternal Organism who is God was anointed as God with all of His authority in Eternity. Paul in Colossians says "Christ" this anointed Being is the "first-born" of all creation and that all things were by Him and for Him. This indicates a deeper spiritual reality. We have to know Jesus of Nazareth deeper than the biological organism. We must know who He was to know who He is and will be in future Eternity when we experience death. He was God, is God, and will be God. The Holy Ghost is the body of Heavenly organisms and He is the Head of the body; the last Adam as told in 1 Corinthians 15 who is a life-giving spirit. He united the divine and human nature in one body through His bodily resurrection. This new consciousness, imagination, and energy allows us to have true knowledge of God. We as new creatures/organisms now have a new identity that should be synonymous with His Heavenly origin. This is how in Christ we are no longer "male, female, black, white, etc. Christ is all and in all, and He who sanctifies and they who are sanctified all have one Source; the Uncreated God who is above all and in all. It is Eternal Life who is the Heir of the Uncreated Life of the Source/Father-Mother. So we who inherit Eternal Life also inherit the Father and become uniquely children as joint heirs with the Heir. This is depth of the gospel which is Eternal Life through the bodily resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. He already gave us this gift, we have to receive it and enjoy fellowship with Him the Holy Spirit. The depth of God is magical. It transforms the Human into God's idea of what it is to be Human which is seen in Christ Jesus of Nazareth. If you are born again you inherit Him who is Eternal Life. It's the biological organism that is under the "curse" of mortality only to be raised into an immortal state through the bodily resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. The mortal "state" is what is unconscious to the Life of God for a greater purpose of being delivered from it's bondage into the glorious liberty of the children of God. He who prepared His children to this glory is God! To Him forever be the power,riches,wisdom,strength, honor, glory, and praise! Amen.
Need feedback on this theory: The priesthood was first given to Adam. Non-adamic humans around the world were mixed/bred into Adam's family lineage over time. Only literal descendants of Adam have any possible right to the priesthood (citation needed). In 1978 the time had come where there were no remaining humans outside of Adam's actual lineage. Feedback needed!
I haven't seen any evidence for that except the testimony of the high priests of sciencism and their followers. The vast amount of time between millennial eras since Adam is enough to account for all the different cultures, peoples, and so forth, is it not?

Thompson was my seminary teacher in the Bay Area many years ago. I really struggled with seminary that year as he was kind of all over the place. Maybe he's changed, but I'm not seeing much depth here. Where is he teaching now?
