Totally agree with how much your expertise in carpentry and building have grown exponentially. I hear you be reminded to get jobs done by the Missus and I feel for you how very hard you work as a one man band. You never slack off and you continue on and on to get the jobs done. I believe your CZcams is so popular because you are so hardworking plus watching your skills develop and your manner of quiet presentation is enjoyable.
Also the way you build is with as much skill you have developed in a short space of time day in day out and you are patient to make sure you don’t make mistakes. Congratulations! Love your work.

I was also wondering if you are using the compost from your compost patch to add to your flower and vegetable garden beds to build up the soil fertility. You are doing all the right things to be sustainable in your home and back yard. Well done.

    That deck is pure genious!
The mosquitos in Southern California are super bad this year, too. Along with a bug zapper, maybe try growing a few of the plants that supposedly repel mosquitos in pots where you'll be sitting outside? Better yet on rolling pot stands? Lavender, bee balm, lemon grass, catnip, basil, marigolds, rosemary, peppermint, mint, garlic and sage. We also found out in absolute desperation that grated citrus peel rubbed on our arms did a good job of stopping the itch and repelling the bugs.

Plants that do well in shade include hostas, heuchera, pulmonaria, various ferns and columbine, depending on your planting zone and whether they would thrive in Japan. The only issue would be to find varieties that stay compact. 😊🌸

I like how your going to improve the house energy efficiency. I watch a few of these Japanese country house fix it uppers channels and the trick most of them miss is double/treble glazing and decent wall/roof/floor insulation. It baffles me as one of the complaints why Japanese don't like these old houses is because they get very cold in winter yet the new owner thinks a very thin layer of Styrofoam under the floor will be all the insulation needed for a house in the mountains.

    • @commentarytalk1446
      @commentarytalk1446 Před rokem

Solid observation. Insulation increases comfort, reduces energy expenditure/waste and reduces CO2 footprint too and cost !

it flowers from spring to autumn (in sweden at least) and has some variety of colors (yellow, white, red/orange, were yellow (again, in sweeden at least) is the most common) it is a fantastic "shrub" that I think would do wounders on your deck. :)

You should leave extra length on your decking then come back after and cut the edge with a circular saw. It makes the edge straight and uniform. It also saves time because you don’t have to line each board up. You should’ve just made the removable piece hinged so it swings up and away. You wouldn’t have to lift it out to gain access or cut it in half.

I highly recommend snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) and Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ) for your north facing planter boxes because These plants are not fussy about soil conditions and tolerate a pH range of 4.5 to 8.5, with 5.5 to 7.5 being optimum. Space multiple snake plants between 6 and 36 inches apart, depending upon the mature size of your cultivar and how thickly you desire to populate the area, and in between each Snake plant the trailing pothos for a dramatic effect that requires minimal maintenance.
    I hope this this helps!

Unrelated but I wondered if you knew of the name for it: traditional Japanese architecture often had cuts made on the end of wood beams, which appear decorative, but are actually to force rain water to drop off the beam instead of running down all the way to a column's head causing rot, as the water is unable to go up the cut and hence will just fall.
Love seeing the progress as always!

Hostas usually do good in low light and are pretty. Mostly green but have some colorful varieties

Blue is one of my favorite colors and that tarp was not a bad shade at all ;D
But I understand how it would be eyesore more most people and honestly even I was feeling sad for that roof - because it must've been a beautiful roof before you saw it.

As they say 40% of your heat disappears out of the roof, I'm sure you'll notice a huge difference once it's done.

I heard lavender was a good plant that wards off mosquitoes and they are pretty. Maybe you can consider putting some of those in the planters to enjoy your deck more.

I'd like to add some more lavender though they need a lot of sun and don't seem to grow that well in our garden.
