    Hi Connie. You’re totally right about the paper variations in Johanna’s books. I noticed it in my copy of Small Victories a few months back, and thought I was seeing things. I’m glad you’ve noticed it too!

      It's strange, isn't it? And paper can make such a difference when we're colouring - it's a good thing to know about, I think. :)

    I love the Neocolor 1s and find they leave a smooth saturated finish with minimal effort and less mess. I use them for backgrounds and coloring large areas. I find they blend well with the Derwent blender pen /Derwent blender pencil and prismacolor blending pencil. They also can be blended together with my prismacolors. My only complaint is there are only 40 colors + Metallics.

      Definitely a smooth, saturated finish! They're so beautifully pigmented. And I blend with the Derwent blender pen, too. :) And I wish there were more colours, too - maybe Caran D'Ache will come out with more in the future. :) Thanks for chiming in!

    I jest. However, that shine that you achieved with the Neo-Color I metallic set is no joke...it's AMAZING! I love it when people in this community find new ways to use our artsy tools, so thank you. I honestly didn't even know they made a metallic Neo set. 🔮 I foresee another purchase in my near future.

    Hi Connie! I colored in the mini secret garden and i colored the name page plate which are verry tiny spaces. In a few places it went trough the paper on the other side, but i put 3 really smal stamps of butterfly’s over it and the page went out awesome! But you are right, in my copy i had the same different paper. In the back it feels smoother, so weird…..and i thought i was making to much layers, well…. maybe i did 😂😂. Thank you for the explanation!

    I absolutely love these informative videos!!! I'm going to order the Staedtler soon, hopefully amazon will have the price lowered for prime days. BTW, I bought an empty copic marker and filled it with Gamsol. It works great. I use a pipette to fill it with.

    I recall hearing that magenta-ish pigments are often more staining than others, which might be why those pink leaves didn't work out quite the same way as the green ones.

    Thankyou so much for your reply, I really appreciate it and I love your odds and ends videos.
    See I'm struggling with pencils due to my arthritis and fibromyalgia, I will keep trying but I want to make nice natural colour pages, and I think after watching you my only solution is pit pens and staedtler pens.
    Can I ask do they last long?
    I loved the way you explained about johanna basfords mini books which I have and I tend to agree with the quality of the papers, oh and they are called signatures not folios, I used to make junk journals and sewed the signatures in.
    I brought last month the carandache nouns 2, and still trying to get used to them.
    Just as a heads up, you are the only colourist on youtube that has replied to me, I've messaged about 4 colourists, and felt defeated with no reply, as how can you learn if no one replies to a specific query.
    So thankyou so much for taking time out of your day to reply.
    Kind regards ❤️

      @colouringchemist  Před měsícem

      Thank you for giving me the correct word! :) And that's unfortunate that you didn't get responses for other colourists - I'm glad I could be of some help. :)
      The Pitt Pens and Staedtler pens seem to last a fairly good amount of time - like anything, they'll eventually run out of ink. It can take some practice and trial and error to learn how to blend them (and you'll definitely get better blends on good quality, smooth paper :)) but keep trying and practising - you'll get there! :)

    I’m from the USA. I got Small Victories by J Basford when it first came out from Amazon. I’m almost done with it and really have enjoyed it so I was going to pick up a 2nd copy at a big Retailer. When I picked it up I noticed the weight of it straight off and looked closely at it. No stitching, paper was gray’ish, super rough and thin. To notice all this without my 1st book next to it shows how horrible the quality was or what a great job you all have done in the Coloring Community to educate us. Now to be fair I have purchased 2nd and 3rd copies of J Basford books on Amazon and all 3 of the same Title where different so it’s now just Retailers that could have different quality.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  Před měsícem +1

      That's so odd, isn't it? One would think that the paper would stay relatively consistent. It's a good thing for colourists to remember, I think - particularly when trying to reproduce a technique that we've seen someone else do. If we have a book with different paper than theirs, the technique may turn out differently through no fault of our own. :)

    The other mini Johanna Basford book enchanted forest, the pages are way thinner.. and I do imagine that the pitt would go through those for sure..

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  Před měsícem +1

      Very interesting! It's a good point to remember when we try to copy techniques we've seen on CZcams, I think - the paper that one colourist is working with in a particular book may not be the same as the paper in the book we're working in - even if it's the same artist/publisher. :) Thanks for chiming in!

    I have colored with Pitt pens in two copies of Rita Berman’s Europa. In one they blended like a dream and in the other they were extremely streaky. The only difference I could find was that one of the books was printed a bit later than the other

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  Před měsícem

      It's so weird, isn't it? One would think the paper would be relatively similar with the same book - maybe they had to switch paper suppliers? I've noticed that colouring with Pitt Pens is more difficult in Rita's newer books - they worked wonderfully for me in her Die Welt unter der Lupe - zu Lande book but I struggled with using them in her newer books. Did you find that the Pitt Pens worked better in your older printing or the newer one?

    Hi, Thank you for permission to use my Pitt Brush Pens lol. I have always loved the brush end but felt they were cheating, and I should be blending 5 shades of coloured pencil to get the best result. Someday, you don't feel like spending hours blending/adding colours.
    Also, I am testing the use of Copic ink clear refill to bring the Derwent Blenders back to life. It is hard to refill them even though it has a refill nozzle, but it was recommended by a staff member in an art shop here in South Australia.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  Před měsícem +1

      If using Pitt Pens is cheating, then most of my colouring is cheating. ;) :) I have trouble with my right hand and using pencils can be difficult and painful for me. Discovering that I can get nice blends with Pitt Pens and the Staedtler Pigment Brush pens was game-changing for me. :)
      And that's an excellent idea with the Copic blender solution! Let me know how it works! :)

    Is the miniature secret garden smaller coloring spaces? As in, has it been shrunk down or are the pictures the same size as the original book just with an excerpt? I have rheumatoid arthritis and have trouble coloring in tiny spaces, I’d like a smaller page area in books but not decreased size of the pictures. (I hope my question makes sense, sorry about that, but thanks for any feedback you can give.🙂)

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  Před měsícem

      Your question makes perfect sense. :) The two Johanna Basford miniature books are both just shrunk-down so the details in those books are TINY. I think that's why they didn't really become as popular as her full-sized book - you can really only use super sharp pencils, fineliners, or other tiny-nibbed markers in them. You'd probably prefer Johanna's Small Victories book - smaller images but not smaller details. :) Hope that helps!

    Wow, that mirror background looks fabulous! How do you manage to get up to the edge of the fish without getting the Neocolors onto the fish? I'm having a very hard time to colour backgrounds of detailed pages with crayons or gel sticks. Of course, at least you can sharpen the crayons, it's even harder with the gel sticks. Great info on the Pitt pens too, thank you!

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  Před měsícem +1

      Glad you liked it! :) I sharpened the crayons - that's how I got close to the edges of things. :) I definitely can't get close to the edges of things with gel crayons - that's where using masking fluid and covering the edges helps. You can then use the gel crayons, remove the masking fluid, and your edges will be nice and crisp. Hope that helps!
