www.bbc.co.uk/5... Fridays at 2pm on BBC 5 live. Mark Kermode reviews Top Cat: The Movie. Made by Mexican animation studio Anima and based on the classic Hannna Barbera cartoon.
The animation was done in Mexico, the 3D was done in Argentina and the script was done in the U.S.A. I haven't seen the film in English, but let me point out that I found it quite funny in Spanish. Actually the original dubbing of the cartoon series for Latin America was done in Mexico, as many other cartoons such as The Simpsons, as well as TV series and films. What makes Mexican dubbing great is that the script is adapted to add cultural characteristics of Latin America, such as phrases, but also its done with a very neutral Spanish, in other words no Mexican or any accent from a specific Latin American country. I've watch The Simpsons in English and I don't laugh as much as when I see it in Spanish. By the way the original Top Cat or Boss Cat as it is called in the UK still airs on local television in Mexico, perhaps that's the key of the success of the film in Mexico, because not just the older generation, but younger generation as well went to the theater to see it, which clearly that was not the case in UK.
GIC81 The real problem is a film that wasn't technically made by Americans at all (aside from translating/dubbing the film). The reason the film was made at all was due to Mexico's fondness for the original Top Cat series (or "Don Gato" as it was called down there) and simply wanted a film with the gang again. This was all there's (and Argentina's).
To be fair I'm young and I know lots of people who adore TC my age. The theme song has become legendary, similar to the connection people have with the Fresh Prince theme.
The problem is that the movie should have been made for both adults and kids, since Top Cat was quite big with mostly adults, who saw the show as kids back then. To have them watching their favorite characters doing stuff that not even kids find funny is quite frustrating.
Going on the asumsion that you'r the same person that is in this video, to answer you question on wether or not they still run TC's show I have to say yes. Granted I haven't seen him as offten as I used to but I do still run across him form time to time on the bummerang channel and do actuly like him. Also you should know, I am in my late 20s.
Even if it did, still doesn't change the fact that it's for kids not adults. I'm not stating that this is good, but being successful or not is not indicative of quality.
He fails to realise top cat was repeated on bbc2 after thunderbirds repeats in the summer holiday in the early 2000’s that’s how I know it and plus repeats were on boomerang all the time Also they made this for the same reason as many other films like yogi bear, flintstones, alvin and the chipmunks, to introduce these vintage characters to a knew audience as well as cash in
Wow, never heard of this! Anyway, as long as the audiences in Mexico liked it. But Kermode's point about who remember's Top Cat is irrelevant, since if the movie's good it;'s good, and if it's bad then it's bad even if everyone remembers it.

Saw it on Boomerang late at night a week ago.
I'm Mexican, and I can vouche for Top Cat. Indeed, it was very big here. They already had their own names in Spanish. And the movie tanked here too.
Did you know that close friends get to call him TC?
It's kind of his job. He isn't just some youtuber that posts reviews on a whim.
Actually a small amount of research reveals it had the biggest opening for a Mexican film in history.
Never thought I'd see the day when Mark and TC would collide... with 3D.
I'm sure you'll be able to find Top Cat on Boomerang!
I loved Bilko, and Top Cat, in the summer holidays when I was a kid. This movie seems to me like being punched in the soul.
rob schneider was in it, btw.

The movie flopped in Mexico too. Not surprised at the least bit.
Apparently Top Cat is huge in Mexico. This was made for Mexico and then dubbed into english. Us Brits don't want it.

I thought Top Cat was the most effectual

I agree that Top Cat was originally aimed at adults, but since then it was mostly aired for kids, much like Bugs Bunny or Tom&Jerry.

How do you make a 3D cartoon? It's a 2D drawing.
How old are you and did you ever see the old TV show?

So, you're lukewarm about it then, Mark?
ok, i give them that... but that only
Sure, on its opening, but thanks to word of mouth it sank.

Top cat the tv series was crap and boring.
