I never look at the color of the silks. I simply count 20 days after the silks emergence before harvesting the corn.
This method has worked perfectly for me for 14 years

Last season i waited a day too long. In the morning when i went out to pick corn the squirrel s had beat me to it. My corn patch look like a bomb literally had blown everything up.

I never grew corn before, but I did this year. I know you should direct seed, but I started mine inside in cups first. I transplanted into garden (a really poor soil site). It grew amazingly well and produced very good. I listened to your recommendation and grew AMBROSIA corn. I have never had such sweet and tasty corn in my entire life. Everyone I shared the corn with said the exact same thing. THANK YOU for your tips and next year acres, lol, of Ambrosia corn !,
Really well done video. You've got not only a superior crop of corn, you're speaking skills for keeping a captive audience entertained is a big plus. My complements also goes out to the videographer. Note: I've learned a lot about corn I never knew the why's or where -fore. Having only an acre of land for my garden, any info I get is another tool for the following years. Thank you...
Waiting till the husk is yellowing a bit on its leaf edges might ripen the ear and sweeten it better

Nice corn and good info. I tried the aztec flint corn this year instead of sweet corn and it hasn't even tassled yet and no corn forming. Everybody around me has sweet corn ready and I'm sitting here waiting. Might have been the weather. Summer was extremely cool and rained 3 out of 5 days and very little sun.
Usually corn won't tassel and silk until the night temps stay in the mid 80's . That's
a problem we don't have here in the South. It's always hot enough, but this year the weather has been different than normal.
I have found that allot of the heirloom varieties of corn do not produce as well as the hybrid varieties. I have heard 30-40 percent less. Just depends on the variety. Also more insects and disease. For sweet corn I like Candy Corn. Also Shoepeg Corn also known as Country Gentlemen is also a great variety, it produces well at least 2 ears to the stalk.

What's the minimum number of rows for good pollination, and likewise, minimum length of the rows?
Basically, would the conventional packet of 10-14 grams be enough, or would I need more, for a family of say 4? Or would I need more? Got 4 packets at the moment - a Yellow, a White, a Bicolor, and an Ornamental that can do double-duty as a sweet corn.

Another question Luke...did you use an organic pesticide on the silks as they were forming corn? Also, did you fertilize with a commercial fertilizer or something else to keep the corn from getting nitrogen deficient, as they are heavy eaters.

Gmo isnt bad for you, its genetically modified to be better not to kill you. The ones saying gmos are bad are farms with organic produce so people will buy theirs instead.
This fall I am starting my winter corn. I garden for taste, food and looks so I plan to grow a bunch of corn in order to give some hight to the garden when it's all covered in snow this winter.

Your corn looks great. I'm near St Louis and our corn was nothing. I did use a new method and I am not doing that again. How and what did you add when you planted your corn? I will use what ever method you tell me for next year. We were so hungry for corn on the cob fresh from the garden. Thanks Luke

Peel back and puncture a kernel with a fingernail or knife. The juice will be milky on sweet corn when it's ready, clear means too early, none means too late. ☺

I planted just two corn stalks. The stalks grew big then spider mites got into the stalks. When it was time to harvest the corn didn't look right. Maybe poor pollination. Not growing corn next year. :(
Oh, I wouldn't give up on corn. Spider mites can be controlled with dish soap & water. And, I'd bet that pollination was the problem. I'd grow a few more stalks in a bunch and when they are pollinating, on dry days, go out and them a shake to help with the pollination. Some people even break off a piece of the tassle and "feather dust" the silk by hand. Don't give up, give it another try. :)

Hey Luke :-)..Kool video..awesome harvest! This season is my first ever to grow corn. A small crop of 12 stalks for testing my abilities, and didn't do to bad. Now I know when to harvest. Question: what do I do with the corn stalks? Dig them out or??

Is their a critter that likes to eat the tassel?seems like it ..as I heard that when the tassel is gone the corn won't mature any further?...its almost finished growing but it didn't really have a chance to dry out...should I leave it on the stalk and watch if any more corn gets bigger on the cob?thank you ....happy growing.....
After I grew about 20 stocks of corn, and found that the second harvest was mealy A grocer told me to harvest only the top 2 ears because the bottom ones will be mealy

do you leave on to grow bigger even if the silks turn brown or does that mean their done. Where did you get your seed. So how far apart did you plant so I can do it next year. did you start in house or plant direct. My first batch I started in house and planted and then something came and ate it all right to the ground. second batch I started in house and planted and it all came up nice and tall. do you spray with anything. so what do you do at the end of the year with the actual stocks? Pull up entire plant? chop and drop (or take to compost pile)? Will the roots decompose enough by next spring in a no till garden to just leaven them in the ground?
John Desroches I never leave anything like corn setting all winter. The plants will be chopped and dried for Halloween, and then tossed in a slow composting pile and will eventually make their way to the garden.
I was wondering the same thing! So after the stalks are removed could I use that area to plant for fall crops or should I plant a cover crop?

Do you have to re-seed year after year?
so what variety of corn did you grow in the garden? It is a hybrid or an heirloom? The heirloom variety I grew this year got to about 10 ft tall but we were not all that thrilled with the amount of the harvest or the taste of that variety? Yours looks to be a bicolor which is what we like but I really want to be able to leave corn to dry on the stalks for use as future crops and to feed our chickens but it needs to be an heirloom.
cswhitmore It was Ambrosia, it is an F1 hybrid. It is simply delicious!

yes, for popcorn you want to let the corn dry right on the stalk. Jut stop watering, and let nature dry them out. Then when they are 100% dry, pop the kernels off.
Great! My plan is to cut them down and use them as decorations for Halloween and Thanksgiving to let them dry longer then harvest the ears after the holidays. I am wondering if that was the origin of decorating with corn stalks. Love your videos. Keep them coming.

Hi Luke, can you please give me some advice?I'm a new gardener and have bought kale seedlings, they have been planted for 4 days and are growing but every two millimetres they grow they seem to get a dead leaf. I've been taking the dead leaves off. Am I doing something wrong to cause them going dead so fast

How do you know if you have left the corn on the plant for too long?
It depends what u want to do with it... early corn you eat it, (is soft), dark yellow corn for animals or flour.
To get it in soft state, the silk on top shouldn't be to dark, the outside cover should be green, you should use your hand to test, if is full and how hard is the corn inside, if the corn inside is to hard to break/press it down, maybe is to late to eat, and should be used for what I said on top.
