    Been growing out small plots of Cascade Ruby-Gold (flint) and Magic Manna (flour) field corn varieties in alternate years to increase my seed stock. Hubby likes to grow a hybrid sweet corn in the main season, so I start my flint or flour corn in trays inside to get a month's head start on it, and transplant it outside at the time hubby is seeding his sweet corn. That way they don't cross-pollinate, and my field corn is already beginning to dry down while the first planting of sweet corn is just starting to set its ears. It's working out well. (Also, our bees enjoy the extra window of pollen availability.)

    Last year I bought some hickory king form ya and planted about a half acre as a test/seed plot. It did great to spite a wet spring and DRY summer. It ground into some of the best whole ear steer feed we have ever made. The cattle went to it over commercial yellow corn feed every time, it even improved their coat. I'd like to step up to about 6 acres this year. But my question is, can the long skinny cobs stand up to a new idea picker? We just hand picked the small plot last year.

    I finally got a rototiller so I'm going to give corn a proper try. I tried it a bit last year but it came up very small, like 4 feet tall, I think due to overcrowding and not fertilizing. But I did get some cute little ears. Do you keep spraying the corn for pests until harvest when you let it dry like this?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Your question is hard to answer. My soil and your soil are not the same. Nutrient load is different, Cation exchange value is different.
      You will need to fertilize according to your soil and the crop your growing.

    So corn needs a lot of fertilizer, how much is a lot? As a potato farmer my idea of a lot is probably two or three times what the average home gardener would think. For my spring chip potatoes grown in Florida it was 300-180-300 lbs per acre of N-P-K.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  Před 9 měsíci +1

      The kernels of field corn are darker yellow and are larger than kernels of sweet corn. Field Corn kernels have a dimple. That dimple is also called a dent, and field corn is often also called “dent corn.”
