Enya was born Eithne Ni Bhraonain in Donegal, Ireland. Enya studied classical music at college under private tuition. On leaving college she was asked by Producer Nicky Ryan to join her siblings in their family band. She did so for a short time, but found it too restrictive musically, and so in 1982 she joined Nicky Ryan and Roma Ryan in a creative and business partnership. Enya's first commission was to write a score for Sir David Puttnam for his film "The Frog Prince". Then, the triumvirate secured the soundtrack to the BBC documentary series 'The Celts'. Enya was then signed by Warner Music and all three by EMI Music Publishing. The first album of this contract was "Watermark" with the hit single "Orinoco Flow". This was followed by "Shepherd Moons", "The Memory of Trees", "Paint the Sky With Stars", "A Day Without Rain" which produced the single, "Only Time".

Old news, of course, but undeniably true. The absolute best decade of latter half of the 20th century and beyond, especially for those of us in mid-teens to mid-twenties. In general, a time of peace and prosperity and a refreshing reboot from the disappointing 70s. Trends and fashion styles-most notably Ivy League rebranded as prep-were great and the output from the contemporary performing arts complex was the best it has ever been. What a time.

Back in elementary school, my art teacher would play Enya while we painted. Sadly, I have forgotten her name with time, but I thank her for playing it.
I was 6 years old when this song came out. I vividly remember watching the music video, and being completely captivated by the tune.
They played this at one of my school assemblies when i was 8. I remember walking in, in single file, with this irish banger going off in the background. Special memories!

I first heard this song when I was about 7. Back then we would pile into the station wagon to go visit Grandma and Grandpa, a 10-hour trip. Since we were little, my parents would split the trip into two days - leave in the evening, get a hotel room part way, finish the drive in the morning. I had the wayback in this huge station wagon all to myself because my brothers would get carsick facing backwards. I remember rolling down the dark highway, curling up on the seat and falling asleep, hearing this song playing softly on the car speakers.....and thinking, what a great song and what a shame it was that it was on the radio so we couldn't just listen whenever we wanted. (Not being aware at the time that my parents had bought the cassette!) Ever since that first time hearing it, I've loved it maybe more than any other piece of music ever written. Sometimes it's hard to pin down a favorite song, because there are songs for every occasion, but I always come back to Orinoco Flow.
Songs bring back such great memories of time and place.
I gave my copy of the Watermark CD to a French girl I was seeing in 1989….we were both 19. the entire album is do damn sexy, like the French girl…… now @ 54 years old & hearing this, it reminds me of when she had to go back to France & the mixed pleasures of the beauty of the song & the sadness of her leaving……. 😢

This was the very first song of hers that I heard and I actually called the radio station to find out who she was. She is just amazing and her singing is ethereal.

Ironically, I was serving in the US Navy when this came out in 1989. That year, we spent over ten months at sea in training and two deployments! When we returned to our homeport that November, I was done. I left the service, and never looked back.
35 years later, I want to sail away again, but this time to a place I won't have to leave. Ever! I don't know where that is. I'm just FED UP with all the corruption in the world. There is nothing "civilized" about the world today!!!

This song was the one I used for the funeral service when my husband died. It was used when his coffin was taken aaway for cremation. it felt so appropriate. He loved Enya's music, as I do. That line "Carry me on the waves to the land I've never been/seen", just says everything. Thank you Enya from a very sad man, thank you Allan Brigg. Continue your voyage!

Absolutely beautiful rendition of a completely different genre in a league of it's own, a timeless masterpiece that gives me the feeling of something bigger and greater out there, I first heard this as a child in a Crystal light commercial and finally found it today at 40 years old!

I also heard this in a crystal light commercial as a kid, and I immediately called customer support and asked the guy. I remember to this day he said "let me see if I can find that information for you" then put me on hold, then came back on after a while and gave the artist and song! I have been disappointed with customer service ever since.
We had an Easy Listening FM station in San Jose, California until 2003 or so. The jockeys at KBAY 100.3 FM played this a lot just after Enya released the album.

I’ve heard Enya’s songs before in movies and else but I didn’t know who she was until Prince Harry in a documentary about Princess Diana and mentions how she used to play this all the time and I’m just upset that I didn’t know about this music before but I’m certainly not disappointed. Makes me feel so classy and relaxed, I’m sure this is what heaven sounds like.

I love the Orinoco flow the first time I heard and I'm a trained musician and somewhat of a music snob.. My only complaint with Enya is too many special effects and computer tricks.. The Celtic Women do a beautiful version of this song and it's just straight ahead music.
