I had never thought about blowing into the combustion chamber to help determine the value positions.
Mark, you do such a brilliant job of explaining your methods in such a friendly way. Love it!

Yes it’s a good little trick that one.
TDC on the crankshaft pulley tells you where the piston is but not the camshaft.
So you can be 180 out . Especially if you have the cam cover on. So if it’s about to fire on compression the valves have to be closed ie you can feel resistance when you blow down the pipe .
Obviously it needs to be seated well where the spark plug seals.
But it’s a good quick way to establish your timing is where you want it.

@@marksitaliangarage Absolutely! The old '180 degs out of phase' situation has probably caught a few people over the years. I would always try to identify the direction of the cam lobes. But using gas pressure as an indicator of valve positions is just very good thinking. Brilliant! :)

I just finished a belt change on a 328 GTS Ferrari wanted 20K, ordered the parts from AWItalian parts in Eaton Town New Jersey $600 bucks and a couple of days later done! Thanks to Mark it's not that difficult. These cars are fairly easy to work on.

I love the way the tensioner is designed. Way better than a lot of them I see in cars

The 308 engine first went into production in 1973 so was probably designed in 1970 or there about. It’s a nice bit of design.

I owned a 308 GTS for 20 years, RHD carb Eurospec, the air con never worked very well, and was quite useless on my own car, like a " mouse farting over an ice cube" is the popular analogy, even when they were new they were rubbish and they are not compatible with currently available refrigerants , on its first cambelt change I didn't re-install the air con, I just left it off and stored all the bits in a box, don't really need it in the UK anyway was my thinking and it made further cambelt changes a bit easier, I know that in the USA there are aftermarket air con units that are direct replacements and super efficient which would likely be of help if you lived in Texas or somewhere similar, some of the very early euro cars didn't even have air con, it was very much an after thought for the US market, but taking it off and leaving it off was one of the smarter things I did with my car.

      Yes a flatulent mouse !
I think that the best way forward would be one of the systems that Chris at Classic Retrofit does for the Porsche 911 it’s fully electric and the compressor is mounted up front next to the battery.
He already makes a good fuse box upgrade for the 308.
I think it’s probably something that I will leave for the future maybe when it gets am engine rebuild.

Not saying this isn’t a skilled job but I believe that appears to be easier than mitsu engines to do

It’s a lot better to work on than the front wheel drive stuff from the big manufacturers . MacPherson strut and inner wings then packaged in with no space to work. Functional design but dreadful to work on!

I studied Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 1 and Part 2 at university; it was interesting enough, but your Part 1 & 2 Timing Belt Replacement was far more compelling. Fascinating. CZcams at its best. Many Thanks.

Could a car like this be driven everyday?

  • @anidiotinaracingcar4874

You don't need to check the proper timing (with a comparator) on these?

    • @marksitaliangarage
      @marksitaliangarage  Před rokem

On an engine build I would set it up with a degree wheel and a dial gauge.
But for the timing belt change on a service it would not be necessary.
Just do what I do in parts one and two you will be fine.
