Mark Devaney is best known for his work with FIAT Dino repair and restoration but as you will see his interest doesn’t stop there. Obsession with classic ABARTH started with his Autobianchi A112 ABARTH, in fact the whole Italian car interest started with that one ! Now heavily involved with classic Maserati restoration and Ferrari. There’s plenty to see on the channel mechanical and body repair. Manufacture of body work and replication of missing parts.

Title FIAT Dino wiper repair.
FIAT Dino Coupe window wipers are the clap hands style. Many Italian cars also use them so this repair might just be of use for owners of other cars. The FIAT Dino Spider has wipers of the more conventional style and are of a totally different design. You can see how the Coupe style works and how I fixed them.

FIAT Dino panel development work.
zhlédnutí 469Před 14 hodinami
The development of the new FIAT Dino Spider rear floor pans continues. I have made these before but I want to make tooling for more consistent repeatability. It’s difficult work as they are factory pressed panels with a relatively deep draw on the press tooling. To make by hand is rather involved as you can see from the video. I’m getting near but not quite perfect yet !
FIAT Dino Coupe v Spider What’s different.

A deep dive into the FIAT Dino platform and how similar the Coupe and Spider are. It’s quite possible to shorten the Coupe platform and create a Spider from it. You could even swap from 2000 to 2400. Certainly a lot of work but entirely possible.

FIAT Dino Spider floors rust! In fact every thing rusts! Well I expect that’s not really a surprise, a Dino has no more immunity than any other car of the era. I will be making new floors for the Spider project. But first I want to adapt the floor pan tooling to enhance the finish on my new floors.

According to the federal HESCHLAVVO law, it is already forbidden in Switzerland to drive combustion engines on mountain passes from 2025. In France, the SCHLABOUBVE regulates that fossil vehicles that produce fine dust are prohibited in all cities from 2025. The BABVVO in Germany will ban exhaust gas pollution control from 2027 and that is what will happen nor the EU tire and brake ban because of fine dust.
Poor Coupe 😢 I much prefer them to the spider…
@@ianxfs The Coupe is a very elegant design. It was the Coupe that switched me on to the Dino in the first place.
gives a deep insight how Fiat was organizing their design companies. They must have had some kind of kick-off meetings upfront in order to have an aligment with Bertone and Pininfarina about what is going to be delivered to both of them and on which basis they can build their designs.
@@gunnarrohde3000 I think a lot of the chassis components and the sheet metal of the platform was taken from the FIAT 125 . The design language not so much the actual parts. The way the coach builders attach the panels is very Italian !
Interesting to know the two cars share substantially same platform under rather different looking bodies. When I first became aware of these cars (rather old issues of Classic & Sportscar magazine...) I remember being puzzled why coupe and spider looked so different!
@@mercury66ut Yes to look at them you would assume that they were totally different cars.
Fascinating, very interesting that Fiat gave the underpinnings to Pininfarina and Bertone. Makes sense.
@@tonysangwine-gould4733 I think that Pininfarina were hoping that they would be able to do the coupe . They certainly put forward a very strong design.
Their design was indeed very attractive but as a 2400 coupe owner I am biased.
Thank you Mark, you saved my a**: I have immediately begun to glue back the roof on my Dino Coupé I had chopped off only this morning, realizing there are substantial differences 😬
@@moritzhummel9747 Well if the roof is going back on how about extending it to create a shooting brake ?

You see the same on the Alfa Giulietta Sprint/Spider. Basic floorpan is the same and was made by Alfa. Chassis number is stamped by Alfa. Then floor is send to Pininfarina and Bertone. They stamp their Job number on the car to keep track . Long story short: The basic core floorpan looks the same and was made by Alfa and then clothed by the design houses.
@@jacohauptfleisch935 Yes this is really just a more modern and production oriented version of how things were done before. In the 1920/30s it was common practice to have a coach built body built for the chassis you had bought from Alfa Romeo ,Bentley or any other manufacturer. Lancia were still producing rolling chassis/ tubes for the Aurelia that could be used this way. I have actually seen an unused one at the Padova show. Even today the large manufacturers are still sharing platforms Ford KA / FIAT 500 if I remember correctly. Probably a more sophisticated interface of adjoining panels, but a recognisable use of this process.
It looks doable but it would take someone with a vast amount of skill and knowledge to achieve that with a professional outcome. I wonder who on this earth would tackle this (O i know a chap call) “Mark”. 👌👍🤣
@@stephenlmckeown1439 It’s a rather involved process but achievable. I was exploring the concept for the 2400 Spider. But it has been decided that I must fix what we have so that is what I shall do. The fate of the Coupe is already decided and it will be used to save another Dino .
Wonder if anyone in the Fiat factory in 68 would think someone would be maping the differences 😂
@@Mitkawatch I’m sure that they would have been proud of their work and the design concept was for this adaptable platform. Old cars were already becoming collectible in the 60s but I expect that these cars were viewed as consumer products and disposable. But some were clearly loved !
Brilliant work - it's coming together very nicely indeed! Why would the design have been stamped into the original factory floor pans in the first place?
@@maseraticc2834 Thank you. So these ribs are used to strengthen the panel. There is quite a lot of shape in this one and that creates stress. Without the rod it might vibrate or pop when standing on it. This is called tin caning . I will make some content about this subject in a future video.
So… do you get knock-off Rudge knock-offs? 😅 Really enjoying your Dino playlist :)
@@mercury66ut Good to hear that you’re enjoying the Dino stuff. Lots more on the channel !
The tooling worked really well, it’s most annoying when the clamps keep vibrating off 😡. That’s a tricky panel to make way outside of my capabilities.
@@stephenlmckeown1439 Thank you I have made quite a few of them over the years. I have developed the tooling over time and I think it’s nearly there. In the past I have actually welded the panel to the tooling and then made repairs to the welded area , This was to overcome the problem of the clamps moving. I’m pleased with how it is working.
Excellent work, very interesting 👍
@@gearhead9828 work in progress but getting there.
Great work Mark and fascinating to watch how you solve these problems to keep the Dinos on the road. It does make me wonder how many classic and vintage cars get a coat of underseal painted on which hides the rust for ever more...

@@G928... glad you are enjoying it
Mark, every time you mention the dreaded ‘R’ word in your Dino videos my blood runs cold! I dread to think what’s lurking beneath the surface of mine but I’m full of admiration for the lengths you go to eradicate corrosion.
@@FiatDino1967 All steel body cars will rust ! It really is a question of what sort of life they have lived. I have seen Dinos that have survived relatively well with little or no corrosion. But plenty have not been so lucky . They are very complex in construction so difficult to repair to the high standards expected in restoration today. With many classics good quality replacement panels are available, not so with the FIAT Dino and this is why they are so difficult to restore properly. Every steel body piece has to be hand formed. Keep watching and I will show the process. Glad you are enjoying the channel.
Mark: After 6 months I finally got mine running after sitting 30 years. Most of the mechanical and electrical issues now resolved. Still lots to do but thanks for the inspiration!
@@user-pw3ji3rn3s well done that must be a great feeling !
Hi again Mark, another informative video. Willl you make floor pans to order? How do I order the paper patterns for the inner and outer sills (so far the only rust I’ve found is the drivers side sill and a shilling size hole, same side between floor plan and rear bulkhead🤪
@@svbreila I might be able to offer various replacement panels in the future at present it’s not something that I am able to do. Regarding patterns for the sills these wouldn’t be necessary unless yours have been replaced or repaired incorrectly.
Thanks Mark, I’ve no reason to believe the sills have been replaced. They have all the tell tale signs of original!@@marksitaliangarage
Its great you are building tools for the reproduction of body panels!
@@bertone83 I’m thinking that it is a good thing as I’m sure that there are plenty of rusty Dinos !

Brilliant!! And typical of Italians that they went to the trouble to teach new drivers how the engine works, whereas over here we just had to answer half a dozen questions on the Highway Code....
