I filmed this vlog over the course of two months. Originally, I set out to just capture the creation of my crochet sweater from start to finish. While the camera was on, I ended up capturing some of the highest highs I've experienced on my journey to understand my issues with mental health. Working with my hands and crocheting has healed something in me I didn't expect, and I am grateful I get to share this journey with you!

My mom taught me how to crochet over the summer when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. When I told her I was pregnant a few months later we decided to make a granny square baby blanket together. My mom passed away two weeks ago and continuing to work on the blanket has been really powerful for me so when you say it's not just a sweater (or a blanket).... I FEEL that

use a smaller hook (at least a whole size smaller, maybe 1.5 smaller), attatch your yarn right to the sweater, chain as long as you want the ribbing to be and then sc along that and slip stitch into the next stitch, then back loop onlysingle crochet along it and back to the sweater, slip stitch into the next stitch on the sweater. Using a smaller hook will bring the bottom of the sweater together.
    love your final outcome though!!

Okay I would totally wear this if it was a cardigan! It’s the perfect length and looks nice and cozy to just slip on anytime around the house and of course, it’s adorable! It can go with anything…..except the Florida weather I live in! Okay so if I lived in the mountains & need a cardigan that is one of a kind, I’m calling YOU! ❤

    "I love being alive"
I saw the realization on your face after you said that. That little voice in you that says "I don't want to wake up today" finally has something to wake up for. (as if waking up for your husband and beautiful boys isn't enough.) I have that little voice too. Daily it says to me "nah. You don't want to wake up. Let's just give up this time". I try so hard to keep that voice down. I can feel the emotion that slowly starts in your feet and moves up through your body then envelops you in the realization that you are wanted. You are needed. You are loved. You have purpose. Thanks Elyse .
Andalsotoo "In 1829, the first crochet pattern was written by Mademoiselle Riego de la Branchardiere. The daughter of a French father and an Irish mother, she is known as the mother of crochet and said to be the creator of the Irish crochet style! At 18 she published her first book about fiber and needlework."

As someone who has spent the last 9 months working on my first ever granny square sweater, I feel all of this in my bones. I did the repetitions of all the little hearts to keep myself chill during stressful meetings, and seeing my progress on my little tracking chart go up felt like such an achievement. And now my lovely partner gets to wear something I made just for them.
I may have honestly done something completely too much for my first sweater since I was pattern-smashing together the granny square (with custom modifications) and the construction method. I missed my new years deadline goal, but fuck it, the sweater is done and now I need to start another big project.

As someone who has also been in and out of an unbearably dark place, that moment when you realize you're in a place where you actually love to be alive, is such an invaluable one. To go from it being legitimately impossible to feel a sense of appreciation or any spark of joy in your existence, to tearing up at the feeling of sun on your skin and the smell of flowers in the wind.. it's the greatest freedom. This video captures so much so well - mental health struggles and the beauty within them, the tornado process behind doing (or learning) something creative, that is rarely shown, and overall just the sense of 'we're gonna do this thing because we want to. And if we make mistakes or it's not what we want, we'll do it again, and that's okay'. That is so encouraging and real. Just, thank you!

Elyse, I have watched you since TT and I have to say, this sweater is gorgeous. It's a perfect labor of love for yourself, and I absolutely felt when you cried over being happy to say out loud that you love being alive. There is so much to love about this. You learned so much, challenged yourself, agonized over the color scheme and arrangement of your handmade blocks, shared with your following and cried with us! Also, you can tie your sweater to the realization that you felt beautiful while making it and there is nobody else in the world like it Or you. I have enjoyed seeing the progress and all your real outtakes. It's been an honor to have found you over here on the tube. Now my son also loves it when he saw it on his dad, and has ordered one😂😂I’m crazy like that, cause I think I’m a crochet addict!…for the love of crochet! “Living by grace, not perfection”. If you’re interested in the history of fibre art, would definitely recommend looking into nalbinding! It’s kind of like the forerunner to crochet and knitting, it’s super interesting to see a method that’s SO OLD still being loved by people today even if it’s less well known than crochet or knitting. One of my favourite things about nalbinding is that there’s no ‘tension’ set by the tools like in knitting or crochet with the width of the needle/hook. With nalbinding the size of the stitches depends on the size of the crafter’s hands, so every piece is totally specific to the person who made it ❤

So, funny story, as I was watching this, I completed a final step on a sweater I'm knitting, decided I didn't like the fit of the bottom ribbing, and ALSO ENDED UP CUTTING IT OFF. I felt so connected to you in this video because shortly after I did that, you decided to rework the bottom of your own sweater. Loved your video! I like the little moments inbetween that you captured, like getting a meal together. Must have taken lots of work.
A couple of tips when crocheting Granny Squares: When you want to add a few ros to widen a square, just add them on ONE SIDE. That way the rest of the square won't be out of guage.
The other thing I do is when I wet block, I spray the piece thoroughly (don't wet it all the way through), pin them, then use a hair dryer to dry them at least half of the way if not about 90%, then I let them finish normally. Don't hold the hair dryer too close to Acrylic yarn or the yarn can start to melt. This cuts your blocking time in half.
