  • I have memerships! There have been a lot of you that have asked how you can support me and my family beyond watcing and engaging with my content! Because of your requests, I created youtube memberships for those of you that want to support additionally! There are 3 tiers, ($1.99, $2.99, and $3.99) and they all include the same benefits. These are simply a way for you to support the content I already create! Love you guys! The link to those tiers are below! ♥️

I have been really interested in film photography lately. The one frustration I have with it is how long it takes to get my negatives back from the camera shop. I wanted to take a chance at learning how to develop my own negatives at home! I am a beginner in this world of film photography and I definitely could have studied up a bit more before fully going for it (but that's how I approach pretty much everything else, so this is fitting.)
    I hope you enjoy!

OMG, you started home developing with COLOR FILM?!?!?!?
I studied photography in college (early 2000s), and our first semester was developing (& printing) our own black & white film.
Color film was 2nd semester, and we were required to have it professionally printed! I remember the reasoning was because the chemicals were toxic, but maybe that’s wrong?
    Anyway, WELL DONE!!!!
And THANK YOU - I have (b&w) developing equipment in my storage unit, as well as some rolls I shot but never got around to developing. You’ve inspired me to take another crack at it, instead of paying someone else to do it!

I have read so many more books AFTER Uni, and explored the realm of creative liberty, my artistic legacy is built on that, not the other.

But the third one came out empty, and that devestated me to the point that I never tried again. This video made me want to try again. Still have the equipment, just have to get the chemicals! Awesome job!
Not a big deal, but just to clarify distilled water is extra purified water. No minerals to leave mineral residue on electrical devices or in chemicals it’s mixed with. I’d suggest making your next batch of chemicals with distilled water to prevent minerals from getting on your film. Distilled can be used instead of purified water. Would not recommend the other way around. Hope you continue to crush it with the creative camera journey.

    Dave

I have been a film photographer for over 25 years, it is the only format that I have ever used: in concise terms, I am a darkroom film photographer.
It is great to see you give this process a try.
    Some suggestions:
Your film changing bag was a great investment. Remember to pull the bag's sleeves over your shirt sleeves, you want a tight, snuggling grip around your arms to keep light from entering the bag (if you don't shut off the light).
You don't always have to cut the leader. At times, if you can get the leader into the grooves, you can pull the film through the groves & then advance your roll with back & forth movement, the typical maneuver for rolling film into your reel. You had the right thinking about not cutting the film leader but if you are inexperienced with loading film, I could see why you might have thought the film leader was in the way.
As for temperature control, you could use a Sous Vide or a temperature control device from Cine Still. It would increase or decrease your chemistry bath, precisely.
If you like the process, give it another go, if not, at least you had a chance to try it out.
Success to you & your Life.

    • @shaunla.1098
      @shaunla.1098 Před 25 dny +1

@@christopheroliver148good day & I agree. B/W processing & developing can teach consistency as well.
I love C41 but that temperature control has to be precise & even scanning Color Film can be a whole other science, it reminds me of Printer Lights that cinematographers deal with when they had their 35mm motion-picture film printed.
One could meter Color Film accurately, process & develop it precisely & scan it & still have to adjust the colors despite all of the light specifics they had taken care of before the scan.
B&W is all about the tonal ranges, even when scanning or darkroom printing.

This reminds me of myself. A few years ago I developed an interest in astronomy...then from there telescopes and all the gear...and then astrophotography. All of this happened over the course of weeks/months. I became super obsessed, and ended up with a $1400 Celestron telescope and my first for real DSLR camera (I've been a photography junkie my whole life, but this took it to another level). I got really into it for awhile...and then it just...stopped. LOL. But hopefully you can enjoy this for awhile. PS, glad you're able to enjoy some things despite having a sweet little son to take care of with his surgery and all. I have two sweet sons, one of which we had a heart scare with last year. I know how you feel! 🥰

THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!!!!! Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment. I’ve always gotten really embarrassed to share things I’m currently hyperfixated on but I’m working on sharing them with people and allowing them the opportunity to connect with it if they want or to continue passing through and find the thing they’re looking for. This is so rediculous I know but seeing your last couple sentences in all caps made me have a quick little cry from happiness. It just means a lot, so thank you. 🥹♥️ I love watching content of people that LOVE what they’re doing or talking about simply because they love it, and your encouragement reinforced that in me. So thank you for everything!!!!!!! So much love to you!!!

I learned to develop B&W in high school in the mid 80s, doing the prints too. I loved it, bought the whole dark room set up, used it for a few years until I got married. A few years later we bought a house with the perfect spot but my kids were little and my husband was not supportive. Digital came along and i sold the entire set up. I wish i hadn't.
Never used distilled water as far as i recall. Colour is a whole other animal!!!

True Story. Out of absolutely nowhere in the late 1990’s I developed an absolute crippling anxiety every time I went in a store. The kind of anxiety that makes others call 911. I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on with me until finally, I figured out it came out every time I spent money. Didn’t matter if I was purchasing a necessity or not. After a while it started to get a little better. If you are in any way telling yourself you could be broke soon, that could be what’s bothering you in stores. Or not. Love your video’s, and you are SUCH a good singer!

Proud of you’re for doing C41 before black and white! Next time, if you get frustrated and need to take a break, just put the roll of film into the sealed container and close it, and walk away and come back. My first time developing film myself took FOREVER because of the same reason.
