- In Thomas Cochrane: Scotlands Hero at Sea, Scottish history tour guide Bruce Fummey gives a summary of the life of Lord Thomas Cochrane, the greatest Scottish and British sea captain. A Scottish hero in Chile, Brazil and the Napoleonic wars, yes, but Sir Thomas Cochrane was so much more.
More tales from Scotlands history than you can shake a stick at. Thomas Cochrane, christened the Sea Wolf by Napoleon was the scourge of the French Navy, but also a South American freedom fighter, inventor and writer

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As one of Scotland history tour guides people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So from April 2020 I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.
you should have mention the incredible capture of the Valdivia fortresses in Chile, he managed to capture everything with only 250 chilean volunteers against 2000 spanish
I just started this video as i read your comment. How does it not mention valdivia? Probably won't bother, as what he did at valdivia was fucking epic!
It's sad that the history of Scottish heroes has been suppressed. Well done for bringing these people back into the light
His gradfather supported the british crown against the jacobite rising in Scotland and Thomas Cochrane was a british aristocrat in the british navy. Nothing scottish about him.
@Hoa Tattis He wasn’t around in 1262, being scottish is in the heart and mind. His family had supported hannovarian brits for generations. I’m not a jacobite fan but they’re miles better than the hannovarian brits
@@rmac8378 What a load of nonsense. The Jacobite rising was not a Scottish thing any more than it encompassed other parts of Britain. Away and learn some history. Scots that defeated these rebels were working for the majority of Scots and the victory over this minority was extremely popular. It established a platform for the greatest political Union in History. God Save The Queen!
@@daviddougall5122 ...and Scots get ruled over by Tories that we never vote for. Fuck the union, it's anti democratic. The coat of arms for the UK shows a unicorn in chains... Scots who want to be slaves are amusing
@@Harrier_DuBois Right now we are are getting ruled over by a SNP/Greens cult that spends nearly £10 million of our money on spin doctors fannying up things like the covid passport and smoke alarms. Plus their green friends want this warrior nation to basically have security guards as out Armed forces. Magic.
Sydney Smith also Scottish with Cochrane arguably 2 of the 4 greatest ever British sailors/captains. Another one worth reading about.
Wasn’t Sydney smith born in London ?
@@blade5896 Yep, born in London to English parents and educated in Kent.
Sydney Smith was English
Love the little jokes you throw in to the tale 😂
Another famous Scotsman who I never knew anything about from school days history classes.
Aye, but don't forget every day's a schoolday
Try reading more, rather than plugging into social media...
He got buried by popular history because he was a rebel, and made Nelson look like a partimer, his whole life deserves a movie/ docu tv drama.
When I was a bairn, scottish history was very limited, mainly because wastemonster set the studies and scotland's heros and inventors were 2nd class in comparison to the english.
As a result, cochrane, maxwell etc. were played down.Only relatively recently has it become possible to easily learn about our great women and men.
Thankfully!
I’d never heard of him. So glad to have you to tell me. Enjoying watching 💜
Some interesting characters coming up
Another great adventure Bruce. I have passed the bust many times when in Culross and had no idea who the guy was. Oh, if only we were taught Scottish history when in school...! 🤬 Keep 'em coming!! 👏🏼
Thanks mate
Yeah, iv'e known of ''the sea wolf'' for many years.......he deserves a mention
I only know of him because I'm related to him lmao

Fantastic read
I found this in a 2nd hand shop in Cape Town...new nothing about him, great story, great book.
I've told lots of folk about this genuine hero/nutter,haven't bumped into a fellow fan once.
Im from Chile, and i can tell you that there are lots of monuments & places named after "lord cochrane". His exploits arent taught in school or anything tho... but when i found out who he really was i was blown away! 🤯
Brilliant
I am so so pleased you have done this video. In fact you could have spent so much more time on him as he was truly an outstanding individual. It is to our shame as Scots that his memory is not immortalised as it should be. The guile, courage and size of the stones on this guy was unparalleled. He was born only a few miles from where I grew up and I only found out about him decades later. Never mentioned in school and yes his derring do exploits stolen and transferred onto fictional English Napoleonic sea captains.....oh the gall! Not just wily, but a man who drew his sword and plunged headlong at his enemies overwhelmingly outnumbered. Treated as a pariah by an arrogant admiralty who tried to rob him of the vast sums of prize money he was due......as a Scot I fully understand where he got his get it up ye attitude. Nelson could never have achieved what this man did, yet Nelson got the plaudits. Hey, he was English after all. As my mother used to say, “there’s nothing like blowing your own trumpet”. Anyway I could ramble on but would just like to say thanks again - Lord Cochrane was a true hero.
Aye, but I already ran way over time with the stuff I mentioned. It's not easy to do it in ten minutes
As a descendant of this mad lad, I am thankful to be a Cochran. He will be forever immortalised If i can help it. Just to add, I reckon mixing scottish and viking (as a viking founded the clan) is wht creates such a breed of hero- they call my clan the Fighting Cochranes for a reason.
Getting better all the time, heavens I sound like a Beatles lyric, absolutely fascinating. I had know idea about the staggering amount of history behind this amazing man. Some mire research on my part, thanks as always Bruce.
Don't do 'mire' research June, you're above that😜
Bruce brought this story to life for me
Yay
Methinks Cochrane deserves a BIG statue or two. WHAT a LIFE - what a story!! 👍
I've read through the Aubrey-Maturin series several times and really enjoyed this video. Shared with my Aubrey-Maturin Appreciation Society fb group. Thanks!
Thank you
I have also read the Aubrey-Maturin books, all of them twice. The history of this guy is more amazing than the fictional Aubrey.
Cheers Bruce
Delighted Matthew
Thomas Cochran was such a unit
another great video, thanks.
Thanks. Keep watching and spreading the word and I'll keep trying to find more😘
Thank you for another wonderful video.
I’ll comment to show support. Your humor is Spot on! 😂
I thank you
Brilliant information again Bruce!
Quite a character eh?
The main inspiration for Jack Aubrey, one of my favorite literary characters!
We all love Cochran’!
Thanks for doing this one
Only that one?😁
What a boy 😲
This man is 1 of 1,000,000 reasons i am proud to be a Cochran
Love your style

Great video as always
I had never heard of him, his life sounds like a movie, superb 👏
Aye, and several books an a'
The problem is if you include half his exploits people would believe it fantasy.
One could argue that John Paul Jones was Scotland’s greatest sea captain! Well, maybe the Scotland’s second greatest sea captain!

As usual a fantastic video. I have heard of Thomas Cochrane on many occasions and only today do I learn he's a fellow Scot.
There ye go
fantastic man a real life hornblower

Hope you do a second (and even third) video on Thomas Cochrane. His story is so remarkable it deserves more than one video.
Have you done a video on David Livingstone? He's another Scot with a tale to tell...(and statues on various continents).
Aye, the Livingstone book is sitting on my kindle. There's just not enough time Douglas! I'm going as fast as I can

brought up in Culross and it's an amazing place, and these videos of yours get better and better !
Thank you very much!
Ok Bruce, How about making a video about the two Scotsmen who became Admirals in the Imperial Russian Navy. Thomas Gordon was born in Aberdeen in 1658 and Samuel Greig was born in Inverkeithing in 1735. Both men rose to the rank of Admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy, and they'll make great subjects for your Scotland History Tours channel.
Love your story telling style. Hope you do some of heroines too.
D'ye ken, I filmed one aboot a lassie yesterday. It's due out a week th'day. I'm also re~doing one for Ethel MacDonald coming soon
I think you mean Commander (as in Master & Commander) at 2:28, rather than Commodore (back then a temporary rank between Captain and Admiral), but your inspired use of Lurpak butter to give an idea of how small the broadside was on HMS Speedy more than makes up for it. As always, a riveting and enthusiastic trip through another important bit of Scottish history. Pure. Dead. Brilliant.
Thanks Bruce. I think that you have found a worthy candidate to replace that character on the column in St Andrews Square!
😂Aye maybe that's an ideo. I'm sure someone would complain of Cochrane's imperfections as well right enough
Thomas Cochrane? Totally going to watch this. One of my all time fave (🇨🇦ian) musicians is Tom Cochrane. :)
A bit unfair on Horatio Nelson at the end there, especially because he was pretty much Thomas Cochrane’s hero. Thomas like all young naval officers of that time admired Nelson. He even met him once where Nelson gave him some hyper aggressive advice about always attacking the enemy or something. So yeah the two got on well. The only reason Nelson is better known is because his battles were on a far larger scale both physically and in importance, especially the Nile and Trafalgar of course. Shame history didn’t get both of them serving side by side in a naval battle would’ve probably been brilliant especially because both were highly talented and aggressive frigate captains by nature.
I know
Stumbled across the video Thomas Cochrane, the craziest sea captain in history on youtube a few weeks ago. Well worth a look. I have now read the book Cochrane The Dauntless. Its brilliant. I have sent a request to the heavy metal group SABATON who do videos on war. (they have suggest a theme for a song). I really hope they make something about this mans life. He should be heralded for the achievements he attained.
Very interesting.
Ah Vida, lovely to hear from you

@@ScotlandHistoryTours 😉😂
@Kings & Generals did a tremendous video about Thomas Cochrane - it's an hour and a quarter long, so it goes into more detail - highly recommended.
Certainly one of the most talented and daring men ever to wear a military uniform. Cochranes' abilities cannot be overstated. If you like great British naval stories set in the Napoleonic Wars, try the Bolitho series by Alexander Kent. Well written stories with tons of action that covers the entire gauntlet of naval adventure from small and large sea battles, to cutting out ships in harbor to attacking coastal instillations. They're great books.
Great scot!
Oh WOW! WHAT a guy! 😮😅😂🙋🇮🇪🏴🙏👌
you should do a story aboot Preston and some of the people he brought to Valleyfield and Fife
It's interesting to me that you even had to CUT OUT some of his exploits, because there were just too many of them to fit into a video of this length. Some men just don't fit into the box we've set for them, and Lord Cochrane is such a one. I knew his story already, but you told it especially well.
I would’ve loved to seen a naval battle between him and John Paul Jones.
Napoleon was more scared of him than Nelson. But the English surpress this man's life and success. There is statues in South America of him.
Well, he was mostly a small unit commander during the Napoleonic Wars, whereas he basically founded and led the whole Chilean and Brazilian Navies. So it’s not too surprising if he gets bigger memorials in South America than in the UK.
You tell a good story Bruce and you did not overstate the case. I read him up some time ago and if you do another video I'll watch it too. Have you done John Paul Jones?
You mean this one? czcams.com/video/H3rMtMJfewU/video.html
can you do like two more hours.on cochrane? your storytelling is excellent
Aye, you may like it, but I think some would get bored
A hero from a time gaints.
Even tho I'm learning (kings n generals' 1.3 hour video on Cochrane, with respect, is also excellent) everytime you say, "Anyway..." I think of the 2 brothers from burniston on (tv) telly in the ice cream/convenience store/truck (lorry?)
Dammit I'll have to stop myself

Thomas Cochrane is one of Britains greatest Admirals. He served in the British Royal Navy.
This channel only covers Scottish fowk in the British navy😜
I've always loved Cochrane's story. Bruce, have you done or would you be willing to do a video on Admiral Sir Andrew Wood from James IV's reign?
I haven't, but good point
@@ScotlandHistoryTours I love hearing about Scotland's maritime traditions. Also, after years of reading Scottish history, you truly bring it alive like no other I have come across. Thank you.

OK, so I have found a way to machine translate. I don't know how accurate it will be, as I don't speak Spanish. I hope this helps
John Paul Jones should not be forgotten. No, not him of Led Zeppelin fame but the USN and Russian Navy officer. Leading a raid on England during the war of Independence and later serving in the Russian Navy.

What an amazing individual he was. I wonder if he had any interesting hobbies?
I cycled to Culross last month for the first time and seen the bust with the Chile flag nearby. I was surprised to see it. I thought this local Culross guy must be liked in Chile and didn't think anything else about it. Didn't bother to do any research. Then I see this video and think how ignorant I was. I'm gonna go back and be a bit more respectful.

the wolf.....can you imagine the sheer terror if you were in a spanish brig and you hear that the wolf was on your tail.....it was said that upon sighting the wolf, many spanish blockade runners jumped off their ships and swam to shore, or died trying.
Oooft
I first came across Cochrane some years ago. While reading about him mounting raids against coastal fortifications my thoughts were that what he was doing was very much like what the commandos did in WW2. Definitely the role model for special forces.
Apparently he was so successful at capturing enemy ships that he once sailed into port with a large, solid gold church cross attached to the top of each mast. Now that, in todays modern parlance, is bling.
It must be in the blood 😂😂and along comes a young man David Stirling
And like a lot of effective special ops troops, he was maybe a notch too crazy for his superiors. The Navy decided not to put him in command during the Crimean War because they were scared he’d risk the whole fleet doing something daring.
thats my ancestor
Thomas Cochrane is a true British legend and hero even more than Nelson.

I think Cochrane is possibly more famous in England - a BRITISH hero where Royal navy heroes are perhaps more appreciated. i live in Plymouth and a lot of my family were RN .. the only reason he may not be so famous now is because ppl have largely stopped about reading about British heroes thanks to the loons on the left trying to accuse everyone from the past of being non-PC... too many people want to tear down heroes rather than learn about them. we are all products of our age .. in Cochrane's age the Navy were expected to be bold and aggressive and were rewarded with prize money for taking enemy ships. so audacity was well rewarded.. they had no time for "equity" 200 years ago. it was get what you could, while you could..
Stay safe in tier 2
Lord Cochrane's going to help me escape😜
I've been told that I'm somehow related to this guy I would love to know if it's true
I know a genealogist www.unlockyourpast.co.uk
Cochrane's career is too incredible to be true, and yet it is.
He’s one of those people who looks like he thought that he was a fictional character, and acted accordingly.
I knew much of Cochranes exploits mostly cause of his being the one of the real life individuals, whose life and exploits, were adapted for Jack Aubrey in Patrick O'Brian's books. I notice he's usually only referred to as British in anything heroic or sensational that he accomplished, but becomes a socially awkward Scot for things the English deem as negative. Interesting that!
This guy was like Khalid bin Walid I'm British and I never new about this guy. He was a master of deception one of the arts of war and he was from his actions criminally minded. To achieve what he did wow what a guy but he failed against the ottoman muslims Islam will live forever and the whole world is our home
