  • These videos cover specific cutting techniques, and are supplementary material for our chainsaw safety course. They are not a comprehensive explanation of when to use the cuts, the potential hazards, or the basics of saw use.
    Bore cutting is a versatile and safe way to fell medium to large diameter trees. Not only is it great for felling trees without leans, it prevents your saw being pinched on back-leaning trees and protects the cutter from barber-chairing on heavily forward leaning trees.

      True, but during the face cut I think he was more focused on getting the direction and angle right rather than being kind to the saw. He got it done super safely and effectively IMO. Great vid.

    Very informative video. Just one note, the hinge failed and caused the tree to roll. My guess is the hinge was too narrow.

      Allowed... but, hinge still guided tree sufficiently, I think.agree with you, larger hinge probably better. Loved this demo. Back cut could have been a tad higher?

    Definitely the best I’ve seen yet on video ! I’ve tried a few times with success . Is this necessary even on a tree having a significant lean or is it more for making sure you can wedge it when lean not so good ? Thank you

    How many inches above the face cut should the back cut be? same as normal?

    Great video, but I have one question: At the end it says to cut the holding wood trigger below the back cut making sure not to cut below the wedges but it looks like it was cut below the wedges. Just making sure I’m not missing anything. Thank you for the explanation of the bore cut

      I think he ment to cut below the back cut but to keep the cut between the wedges and to not cut as far as to be cutting under the wedges.

      @@rayl.b.4438 my theory is that the purpose of cutting below the wedges is to not accidentally cut into the wedges. I think 'beneath' in the video should be replaced with 'between', because if you cut between the wedges you will likely hit the wedges... Bad language/explanation from my side, please bear with me.       It's a mix between boreal and more southern hardwood forest. White, red and black spruces, balsam fir, white pine, red and sugar maples, yellow and white birch. Some American beech and red oak, but they aren't as plentiful as they were back in the day.

      The chain doesn't look dull; I see big woodchips coming off the chain when pushed a little into the wood. So I'm guessing you meant to just state that the chain should be sharp before attempting to do this. Which I totally agree with.

      It probably had a side weighted crown or had side lean. He probably should have left the hinge a bit wider on the opposite side to the lean, 👍🪓🌲🇮🇪

    A good demo but I wouldn't stand directly behind the tree when cutting the holding strap at the back. Stand off to the side, 👍🪓🌲🇮🇪
