The Birth Of A Tool. Part 2. Chisel Making (by Northmen)

  • This is the second part of a short documentary movie that shows the whole process of how Northmen tools are being hand crafted.
    "It is a tragedy of the first magnitude that millions of people have ceased to use their hands as hands. Nature has bestowed upon us this great gift which is our hands. If the craze for machinery methods continues, it is highly likely that a time will come when we shall be so incapacitated and weak that we shall begin to curse ourselves for having forgotten the use of the living machines given to us by God."

    This almost makes me regret what I've been doing with my life - my childhood dream was to be a blacksmith, and seeing you two and the level of skill that you have...I only wish I could have spent more time developing some sort of skill, something that I can proudly say I was good at. Amazing video, you are truly artisans of your craft.

      Only bearded men in sweaters

    • @LostInTheClouds
      @LostInTheClouds Před 5 lety

      @@sharonsharon2604 From my perspective the only reason that it shows a bearded guy in a sweater is that he's the one making the tool. If it was a woman making the tool I have no doubt it would show the woman. What these videos focus on is not the patriarchal tendencies of contemporary society; these videos focus on the process of turning raw materials into tools and buildings. If you desire to see women featured in these videos i suggest checking out "The Birth Of A Wooden House." which is also featured on this channel, it details the crafting of the house in which, Jacob, the founder of Northmen, his wife, and their daughters, live. Though there are no female woodworkers shown, it shows both splendid craftsmanship and a deep love of family that shows us why men and women go to the lengths they do in order to cultivate human connection for both themselves and their children.

    Just a suggestion, when hardening the blade portion it would help a great deal with the strength of the tool if you quenched it so that it's not just like 1 section were it's hardened and then it's just normalized at a sharp line like what you've done. That would be a very weak point in the tool. Try to elongate the hardened portion by heating less far up the blade, only heat what you need hardened, then quench the hole thing. This will make it so that there is no such thing as a weak point in the tool and it will last through much more use.

    How do you even put this through any sort of hard work? Their such a piece of art, labor intensive art. Crafted with the upmost care and precision, how do you expect me to get any sort of work done with this. I would be so worried I'm using it wrong and chip an edge, or snap the handle, or who knows. If I owned one of these I don't know how I could ever bring myself to using it. But as a builder myself, I understand that if a tool is made, it is to be used. And these tools, these individual masterpieces, are dying to be used to the best of their abilities. I need to see one in person. I hope that they start taking orders again soon.

      @carrotsporks Před 8 lety +3

      +Adam Slater I see what you mean, but I almost feel like they are a blank page, and the chips or scratches tell a story and it grows and personalizes the tool for you as it stays with you for your life. Eventually it will show your wear patterns in the handle and will become one of a kind, like your leather jacket and baseball glove. You can't ge tthat out of a $10 tool you can replace at Menard's.

    • @resipsaloquitur13
      @resipsaloquitur13 Před 8 lety +3

      +Steven Micko This is the truth. Yes, tools of this kind are meant to be used, but also cared for. Hit an old nail in an old timber and chip the edge; craft a new edge. These tools are timeless so long as they are owned by a craftsman who appreciates fine tools and knows the true value associated with them. Use them indeed. When their broke, mend them with your own hand with the care only a true craftsman can apply.

    • @resipsaloquitur13
      @resipsaloquitur13 Před 8 lety +2

      +Steven Micko Also, there may be times where for instance a slick can no longer be used for that purpose. However, that tool can be repurposed and made to do other things such as chiseling or hell maybe even splitting kindling to start your forge to make a tool of your own. Tools like these have a soul. The purpose isn't always what defines them. These don't come from Home Depot.
