- David Suchet may be best known as TV detective, Hercule Poirot, but there’s a lot more to the man who spends most of his life revelling in being other people.
In this interview, which first aired in December 2017, he talks to Jane Hutcheon about how Hercule Poirot has become darker over the years, playing an Islamic terrorist in Hollywood blockbuster Executive Decision, the amazing true story behind The Last Confession, and playing the baddie in Harry and the Hendersons.

He personified Hercule Poirot the way that it was never done... Simply, one of the best actors of our generation.

Amazing David Suchet in "The Way We Live Now"
I wish Hercule Poirot, a Walloon, had a Flemish partner.
One of the best actors? You are very short sighted. You should get a job at their ABC

What caught my attention was David Suchet's humility. It's so refreshing, compared to so many other famous actors. Also, the interviewer was delightful!
No one will out-do Poirot's humbility!
Exactly. Beautiful interview n. Delightful persons. Thank you very much Mister Suchet for your wonderful work
Most actors are humble and hard working.
Humble and smart - I personally love his articulation : smooth and straight 🤗🤠

What a delightful man David Suchet is. So likeable.
Indeed.
Yes, such a lovely man. So full of class.
I love Agatha Christie's books! To me David Suchet is the ONLY Poirot!!
I think Peter Ustinov did alright.
...oops, I thought Hercule Poirot was the only David Suchet...and the delight when she presented him with the book...cheers,
PERIODDDDD
John Moffet made an excellent voiced Poirot for BBC radio Poirot series. They are some episodes available online.
Andrew Blair Yes, that really tickled me. David Suchet is quite a thoughtful, engaging man. Best interview of him I’ve ever watched.
I can't resist to smile when i scroll down and can't find a single negative comment. Feels great to belong to this fandom.
Do you want a negative one about kenneth branagh? 😂
@@quents How about Jane Hutcheon? That's way too much cats.
Indeed. David's portrayal is a jewel in the UK crown of cinematic excellence. The time period, the atmosphere...so attractive and deliciously romantic.
And yet many of us come to love and caring and compassion without having to read someone's private 2,000-year-old mail.
@AMT congratulations on your opportunity in meeting David Suchet. I would enjoy such an opportunity myself.
Suchet has such a great natural voice. It's ironic that he is so well known for not using it. He was the best interpreter of Murder on the Orient Express.
Definitely agree.
He is the best Poirot, by far....exactly the way Christie describes him
Murder on the orient express was awful
Murder on the Orient Express. To me, that one was poetic.
How ever much I loved him as Poiroit, I must confess to liking the actor himself BEING himself even more!
I totally agree! I feel the same!!!
He is a sublime human being.
A humble man. Better than 99% of the actors we've been force fed over the years. Well done David.
Most British actors are like this: respect for the way they perform their difficult craft, from their audience and their fellow-professionals, matters more to them than 'celebrity'.
Totally in awe of the dignity and eloquence of Jane Hutcheon and David Suchet. What an interview - no cheap gossip or braggadocio.
Braggadocio ...ive not seen this word in a long time
I had to use my dictionary to understand 😁
Me too. ❤
What a beautiful voice Mr Suchet has, and how charming the interviewer is 😍
David souffle
Agree...
he sounds like E. A. Poe's "never more" to me :D ... i like the actor's voice, who speaks him in Czech - Jaromír Meduna (omg, he was born the same day like me :D ) ... he also speaks the redhead man in CSI Miami or what ... Horatio Caine ... when David Suchet played Reacher Gilt, i didnt recognize him, because someone other spoke him :D ... hm, David Caruso was born on January 7 :D ...
Oh yes! I listen to him read scripture and he's so soothing!
I saw Murder on the Orient Express on DVD. I was so taken by it that I read the book for the first time. What absolutely stunned me as I read the end scene as Poirot walks off, was the description of his inner turmoil which I could vividly recall being exactly expressed on David’s face during the scene. It remains the most remarkable piece of wordless acting I’ve ever seen.
In total agreement with you
Same!
Surprising, a complete change from other Poirot movies, where he spools off judgement at the end of the movie.
Yes I know but that’s because he read all the books and really did his research into the character and stories.
@@suzie_lovescats Knowing the character, and being able to portray the character's emotions without words.are very different things.
Such a ‘professional’ interview, thoughtful, intelligent and more importantly, humane.
This was the most interesting interview we have ever witnessed. Jane Hutcheon was sincerely engaged with David Suchet, having throughly done her research, to the point of presenting him with a book that he obviously will cherish through the years. Her questions about his finding faith in God, were heartfelt and in earnest. We were blessed having watched this, indeed ❤️
Jane Hutcheon is a true empath. She has even cried whilst doing her interviews as she has been so moved by the responses and her interviewees often congratulate her. She no longer presents One Plus One and the two presenters who have taken over are nowhere near as good. Often I don’t bother to watch anymore as it never reaches the same emotional level.
I am humbled to add to your touching sentiment. She was well prepared and lovingly interested. He is true a Gentle Man. We all should have his loving disposition and faith in our God of choice. Would if we could, help our country's people to all try to approach this special
attitude that Mr. Suchet comes from the story by St. Paul as Love. Oh gosh, I feel so lucky to have seen this. God Bless America and all our fellow travelers in this topsy-turvy world.
This is the LIE sold in these present times. As one commenter responds right here, 'our God of choice'...! Impressionable words. Add to it 'love' & the 'special attitude' David is supposed to have personified, it just about sums up the whole thing best. For this has nothing to do with the Faith - which is the True Knowledge of God and hence also called the Gift of God. This is merely an expression of blind-faith to condone with all the rest of blind-faiths people boast of. The more recent modus operandi of having wolves infiltrate the flock to plant their lies and lord it over them! Therefore, it is no coincidence he is the chosen man to advertise the latest edition of the NIV - an absolute act of subversion of God's Word by the worst of corruptions done to it yet! The right hand of Babylon, UK you have done it again.
Patti McQ I enjoyed the Poirot programmes very much. But the religious twist turned me off. How can a man with such intelligence to play that role believe in the existence of some kind of Super Being in the sky? There has never been any evidence for any sort of God. Human beings came about through Evolution which is even taught at Oxford and Cambridge.
You are sadly mistaken. He has not said at all that he believes in God or even in Jesus Christ for that matter. He is merely fulfilling the 'new age' agenda of promoting imaginary love and more imaginary faith in whatever it is you 'super-intellectual' lot call love and faith, to rope in 'Christian' fan-following! The Godly have not fallen for it. How come you've been so gullible?
Of the nearly 35 odd interpretations of the character of Hercule Poirot, Mr Suchet is undoubtedly the closest. As the world celebrates the 100th year since the character was created, for many of us who have read the books David ‘Poirot’ Suchet’s interviews, each and every one of them, have been so engaging, entertaining and educative. This is a must watch...
The interviewer is brilliantly prepared.
This man is so good that when I see David Suchet I don't see Poirot and realizing he is David Suchet when I watch Poirot Suchet disappears completely now that is a great actor.
It is one of those rare instances where the value of being an intelligent person in the entertainment business clearly comes out. Such clarity and powerful articulation.
One of the kindest host/interviewer in history. Thank you for the thoughtful questions.
I highly agree💯
Simply a woman to fall in love with....
Tom Welling once said that he hesitates to sign the contract for Smallville tv-series because it was for six years and he would be locked in a contract. So, I understand why David would hesitate. Imagine being locked in a character for 25 years and not be able to take on any other roles. The reason why British actors are so good is because there are always going back to the theatre
Jane Hutcheon, you are a perfect interviewer. One of the best I have ever seen.
Couldn't agree more. Some interviewers hardly read necessary materials and always try to convey their egoistic points' of views. And they almost never listen to the person who is being interviewed. So this interview was very refreshing.
What an extraordinary talent is David Suchet! A classy Man, a fascinating Actor, a great Artist!
What an exquisite interview, done in an absolutely attentive, respectful and competent way!
It was quite awhile after I had watched David Suchet as Hercule Poirot that I heard his actual speaking voice. I was completely mesmerized! He has such a beautiful voice and a wonderful smile! Loved this interview!
He does -- and moreover, I think that he works continually at his art. His voice, when Poirot, contains so many subtle changes to convey surprise, disbelief, humor, regret. David Suchet is such a genius of theater and art.
I just love this man. I can listen to him talk for hours. How he did Poirot talk like that with such baritone voice amazes me.
He was once interviewed by Margaret Throsby when he was doing a show in Australia and she asked him about this, he said of course he naturally talks from using breathe and deep from below when he had to play Poirot he knew he used his brain so got the accent and pitch from the brain rather than chest
These australian shows treat the guests so kindly and with such respect. I wish British and American interviewees would learn a lesson from the Aussies.
👍👍👍👍👍
Not all the of the Aussie shows, some commercial TV is very heavily influenced by tabloid style . Our ABC is the gold standard of excellence in this field, investigative journalism, drama and comedy.
God save the ABC, cause nothing will save the Murdoch tabloids.
I totally agree, this lady is intelligent, has researched her subject fully and is simply the best interviewer I have ever seen. British TV could learn a big lesson.
@AMT Thank you, nice of you to say. I hope with great fevour, you might have noticed.
The way most interviewers treat guests depends on whether the guest is a Jordan Peterson (non woke) or a politically correct game player. David S is altogether different, and commands respect.
David Suchet's Poirot was like the character just walked straight off the pages. Perfection. And what a delightful man he is 💜
And yet he wasn't. Book Poirot didn't act like David Suchet's version and didn't look like him. How can you say Poirot "walked off the page" when Suchet's mustache was too small, Suchet is balding (Poirot was NOT!), Suchet is a bit too tall, Suchet's accent was wrong, and Suchet's mannerisms aren't like Poirot in the books? This is confusing.
All the players in those stories are just fantastic.
"I am honored to be remembered at all."
God is with your heart, my friend, and resides in peace .
David is really a treasure.
A beautiful, evocative interview. David Suchet has a beautiful smile and, watching this, I realized that I never saw it when he played Poirot! Though the character smiles, he never, ever shows his teeth! Additionally and so charmingly, Poirot squints his eyes when he smiles in delight. These tiny details are crafted by Suchet in order to enrich the little Belgian. The end result of this and a myriad of other subtleties is that marvelous, marvelous character.
I did see it when he played Poirot, he frequently used it to take the sting off of some of his difficult questions.
Very true and a great observation ☺️
He is so charming. The interviewer was wonderful-I love the fact that she gave him that rare and important book.
So far in my life, I have never watched such a delightful interview. Both interviewer and interviewee were smiling, and totally on the same wave length if I may say. Both were enthusiastic and everything was harmonious. It was strange for me to hear David Suchet speak in perfect English when I am so used of hearing him as Poirot with a French accent. By the way, David Suchet never mastered the French he was speaking and yet to me he is the best Poirot and an excellent actor. Also, Poirot had tastes more of a French man than of a Belgian man. I guess Agatha Christie did not make the difference. Yet David Suchet was too good in the role to stop at those details. He was so humane. We have to watch many episodes to see how Poirot is discreetly very generous. Thank you so much for this uplifting interview.
I live in Southern California, in the U.S. I've never been to Europe, and i doubt I'll ever go, but im intrigued by your comment about Poirot having French tastes not Belgian. What are the differences?
Mr. Suchet is a first class human being and has earned the public's trust and respect. He is an excellent actor and is missed in the theatre.
He has SUCH a beautiful voice, and spirit. 💕
What a lovely interview. David is delightful and definitely THE Hercule Poirot.
Now that's what's called a perfect interview 😇 one can listen to them talk for hours and hours ❤️
Been fortunate to have met the man and cannot speak more highly of him. A really nice, genuine person.
I met David taking my boat licence in France, a wonderful human being, we both passed.
Congrats and WOW. Lucky you met him.
Jane Hutcheon giving David Suchet that book by Vyvyan Holland was the cherry on top of an absolutely first-rate interview!
David Suchet once said that Poirot is the series people watch when they feel good, when they feel bad, well, looking at him in his natural emploi it's clear why it's like that - he puts all of himself in all of his roles, 101% dedication
What an interesting interview. One thing I don't think people appreciate is how important a good interviewer is to bringing out the best in a guest. As a broadcast journalist myself I really applaud both her excellent preparation and her great talent in the moment of conducting a great interview. Bravo!
A lovely interview with a fine British actor. Thank you Jane Hutcheon.
David is by far one of the greatest and underrated actors of all time.
I agree completely
Suchet is successful, admired, respected by his peers, knighted, easily recognized, an award-winning actor, and in demand. He's got $15 million in his bank account. How does that make him "by far one of the greatest and underrated actors of all time"? The "underrated" label seems to be applied needlessly and incessantly to give the impression that highly regarded and famous artists are obscure, niche entities who only the hip, cool kids know about.
probably he is not as well known in America, but not the case in England, - it can seem this way to Americans of non American actors, but it's not the case in their own country, or even world wide. Some younger people in the US don't know who Catherine Deneuve is, but she's hardly underrated! or Even in some Americans of any age have never heard of Midsomer Murders! that's been going still for years and years....
@@TheStockwell he’s literally unknown outside of the UK. He should be a household name across the planet as far as I’m concerned.
His Bible readings are so wonderful. He brings a freshness and a portrayal of the Bible that only a true believer could deliver. I have never heard it better than what David presents in a series of beautiful renditions of the Holy Book 📖
Thank you 🙏 Mr Suchet

I agree, just recently discovered his reading on YT. It is amazing to leave it quietly playing all night, his voice is so measured it doesn't disturb your sleep at all
So much respect for David Suchet and love to watch Poirot episodes over and and over!
What a delightful man; HE is what made Poirot so attractive and likeable.
What a brilliant interview. I feel that we've learned more about this great character actor from Jane's gently probing questions than from anyone else. She has brought out the very best of David Suchet for his devoted fans, and I am tremendously grateful.
I love David Suchet. God blees him. He is the best actor.
Thanks for this interview.
What a wonderfully warm and heart-felt interview with David Suchet. I agree with so many other comments that Jane Hutcheon did a perfect interview..Bravo, Jane..!! And yes, David Suchet...WAS...Poirot. I have seen Mr. Suchet in a number of different kinds of movies; even a Western, and he always made an impression.

Lovely and refreshing to see a fine interview like this one, one with genuine interest, a genuine human exchange, well-informed, full of intelligence, sensitivity and warmth.

Mr suchet seems like such a nice humble gentleman so different from many famous actors and celebrities who are pompous, arrogant and preach their values to others- what an interesting man and career- this interview is a breath of fresh air

Remember, according to the Revelation of Jesus Christ as Written by Saint John the Divine (who I reckon is the same Saint John who Wrote the Gospel of Saint John, My Favourite of the Canonical Gospels) during His Exile on Patmos, one of the First Big Events of the "Rapture" is the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Revelations 19 7-10 (Note, My Personal Bible is a very Elderly King James that has been in My Family for Years, so the Verses are King James) , "Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me , Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage super of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God") when Our Lord and Saviour gets Married to the Church.
So there, You will get to Eat with and Speak to the Lord Jesus, to Your Mom once again, to Sir David Suchet, to Saint Peter, to Saint Paul, to Ancestors who Believed in Christ, to everyone who Believed in our Lord and Saviour! *and* the Old Testament Saints like Moses, King David, Joseph, Abraham, Noah, and Ruth as well, all! what a Wonderful Meal it is going to Be :)
Take care Now, and I hope that message gave You a little Extra Encouragement.
I love David Suchet, but this interviewer is the best! I think it's the first time I've seen her! Her gift to him was so touching.
What a beautiful soul this man is. His story of finding the Christian world view- viewing and relating to others through the lens of Christ's love- almost brought me to tears. What's more, the interviewer effortlessly leads us down beautiful paths of this man's professional and personal life, even managing to be creatively thoughtful and kind, with a well-received gift, to boot! Brava to her! Just beautiful!
What a voice! What a lovely man. Great interview, well done. And yes, THE definitive Poirot!
Exceptional interviewer and of course David Suchet , Poirot, is a rare artist. Thank you for this treat.
My Grandfather too (on my mother's side) was the closest male to me in my whole life, he fought against Rommel in North Africa during WW2. I have fond memories of our evening walks and whole day rambles. What a great all round guy.
David Suchet is always just so wonderfully articulate. Such a pleasure listening to him.
He is so adorable and Humble. One of the best actors ever!
I accidentally stumbled onto “Poirot “ series about three weeks ago. I have been binge watching ever since. As a fellow actor I am enthralled by Suchet’s work as Poirot. I cannot think of many actors who understand and is thoroughly comfortable with allowing the moments to unfold in real time …regardless of how long it takes. It also helps to have a director who is wise enough to allow an actor that kind of freedom. Those moments when Suchet is staring into the camera and the “little grey cells” are hatching behind those marvelous eyes and expressive eyebrows are my favorite. So much so…that I fall in love with Poirot a little more each time. Hopefully Suchet will come to New York and I have a chance to see his other work on stage.
What a dear and sincere man!
To be frank, the first time I heard him speak British English I was shocked and searching if someone else is dubbing. Poirot was so strongly embedded in my mind.
He is so charming and the most wonderful Poirot ever !!
An astonishing actor. His Freud portrayal is unmatched.
Such a lovely, decent man. “Poirot” has always been one of my favorite shows (it started when I was only 7), and David Suchet is the primary reason for that.
Well, that has to be one of the most sympathetic and interesting interviews I've ever had the pleasure to watch, with one of the best prepared interviewers. Great to listen to those two sweet, intelligent persons.
Agree entirely.
Very good interview. Both the charming actor and the intelligent lady that conducted the interview.
What a great interview! Sadly, it seems strange to watch an interviewer at work that actually did some research. Plus, I love Suchet and Poirot!
Props to Jane Hutcheon for this interview, one of the best-conducted interviews I’ve ever seen. I will definitely be watching more.
I so enjoy David Suchet, as a person and as a performer he is just lovely.
One of the most glorious voices ever.
Absolutely lovely video! Wonderful see David Suchet and listen to his journey as an actor and how the role of Hercule Poirot found him. I think he is no doubt an excellent actor and a brilliant man with a beautiful personality and a beautiful heart-when I think of his involvement with poor people and feeling so sorry for their situation. This is most commendable. I also just loved listening to his search for a deeper meaning of life which led to him reading the bible and finding answers in Romans 8 - this is admirable and so wonderful to hear - how much he has appreciated this part of the bible and the impact it had on his life and eventually his faith finding a resting place in Christianity. God bless you David and may you continue to live a joyful and healthy life and enjoy every one of Gods blessings on your life. You are indeed one of Gods most treasured prizes and definitely His masterpiece!
What a lovely, lovely man! Agatha Christie's books were my first adult books, I went from Nancy Drew to Agatha Christie, and I think that David Suchet is the very best Poirot of them all. I really think that he understood the character completely and played him beautifully. I've seen a lot of interviews with David Suchet, and I find him a fascinating and very kind person. I love to see him as himself even though he doesn't think that he is very interesting. I just love him, and this is a fantastic interview.
I was lucky enough to see David Suchet in Amadeus (My favorite play.) in NYC on February 27, 2000. My tactic after a show is to quickly go get a rose from a corner shop. When I return to the stage door, I let all other fans get their autographs first. After Amadeus, I had Mr. Suchet (He wasn't Sir David at the time.) all to myself! I gave him the rose, and I told him, "I only wish it could be dozens and dozens." He said, "That's so sweet, give me a kiss." I kissed him on his left cheek! We talked for about 10 minutes or so. I told him I'd seen him in King John at the RSC on a 1974 trip to England. At that time, I had no clue who he was. I only found out I'd seen him when I saw his name in my RSC program years later. He is a Sweet, Kind, Humble Gentleman and an EXCELLENT Actor...one of My Favorites!!! This is TRUE and NOT made up! Lora B. Ross, Hampton, VA

I used to watch him on Blott on the Landscape, that was the first time I saw him. Young and older he truly is quite superb. God bless you David.
Indeed that whole interview has a flow and a rapport that just raps you in the very exceptional exchange of information! It‘s 03:30 in the morning and it kept me from retiring without regret and if it lasted another hour I would gladly stay up. Just yesterday I have seen his Murder on the Orient Express, having seen the Hollywood version not more than 2 month earlier. But I did not mind, since for me Suchet does not play Poirot, he just IS Poirot! And I was amply rewarded, although it is the same story, it is a totally different film with so much more depth and the end leaves you with so many thoughts about a man who struggles with himself and his faith. Much unlike the Hollywood version.
She’s great! This is the first interview that I’ve seen with either of them and it was very well done and a pleasure to watch!
Hecule Poirot is my favorite of the Christie characters ( followed by Miss Marple:) This beautiful actor bought him to life precisely as I saw him in my mind as this wonderful journalist does justice to this legacy.
