      They do plan to do some cast stuff soon which will bring the cost down. Machined models will still be available along side them.

      Yea, that's the wild part! I'm like gee whiz $20k like u said is dern near the cost of a 2nd truck. I think since it's new that costs are always higher and I hope it comes down as time progresses. Beautiful pieces tho

    My understanding is that 74Weld uses straight cut gears, and because of that people say these make a lot more noise compared to helical cut gears. I would go with helical cut portals if I did this.

    • @RodneyStonewall
      @RodneyStonewall Před 19 dny

      I’ve ridden in a Jeep and two broncos on 74Weld portals. We did both high speed and crawling…zero gear noise. The only one that says their gears make noise is some ill informed guy who happens to import a Chinese portal that he claims is superior

    Will be cool if these catch on, 20k is steep but it's new technology and im sure design, testing and production was a huge cost for them. So hopfully if they become a thing a they get the production down, it may be more afordable down the road. 🤞

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah they are pricey. They want to make a cast version in the future and offer both. The cast offering will be thousands less, but still expensive no doubt.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Haha, no sir. That’s an upgrade! Less expensive kits will be coming when they start casting all this stuff vs machining.

  • @johnc8327
    @johnc8327 Před 4 měsíci

    20K is a bit rough. For a wrangler you could buy all new axles and tires and probably a lift kit for the same money. They will have to find a cheaper way to produce these, or it will be a pretty niche product. I love the idea and the engineering behind this though. Great idea for someone that just wants to throw bigger tires on a factory vehicle.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  Před 4 měsíci

      They plan to make a cast version to bring the cost down, with the optional machined version. It will still be quite expensive for a kit I’m sure. If these were a true bolt on 100%, they would be excellent for maintaining resale value of a vehicle since no regearing or anything would be needed, but they do require more work to install than I originally thought.

    • @74weld
      @74weld Před 10 měsíci +2

      We also give you a disk brake rear conversion, larger brake rotor and caliper in the front, and full float conversion with 4340 shafts on the rear. We also give you ground clearance that no lift kit will ever be able to do

    • @mattjurd
      @mattjurd Před 10 měsíci

      @@74weld Not arguing if its good or bad, just genuinely interested in what others are paying to get an equivalent lift and regear. Once that is known we can compare value.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Some people think a solid axle swap is money better spent. To me, if I was building a rock crawler then maybe. But for a vehicle I drive all over the country, that would rule that out for me.
      A long travel kit can get expensive fast. Like 12k or more for a quality kit. Certainly an attractive option, but so many heim joints freak me out. Such a pain to deal with here in Colorado.
      As an overland truck type of traveler, I have to think portals are the better bet. Just because of the gearing, and keeping geometry stock for the sake of carrying the load. The major downside is the weight, but it’s unsprung so 🤷🏼‍♂️.
      I have no experience with any of these major modifications, but portals have always seemed to be a advantageous option for an overland build. Rockcrawling not so much.
      One of the biggest things people bring up with portals is the best build up. But since these are aluminum and these guys are saying these things can do high speeds on daily drivers, they are onto something.

    • @sheerkhanful
      @sheerkhanful Před 10 měsíci

      Given the obvious high quality nature of the design in these portals, one major con of any portal axle is weight gain so it would be critical to know if the total weight gained by going to portals is more than most can bear, especially if we're talking about 3rd Gen Tacomas. Front and rear portals along with the addition of real disc brakes must add significant weight. I would like to know what that total weight gain is.

    they are not recommended for daily driving. Why install a 20-25K upgrade that you cannot use all of the time? Plus there is all of the additional rolling resistance you get with all of the little gears you are turning. No thanks. My 3" lift and regear was cheaper, and gives me everything I need.
