    According to Maynard, "the song is about tendencies not about a specific individual. It's about tendencies of people wanting to stand on a soapbox and sacrifice themselves in some way. We don't need that process anymore. You're on your own now. "

    Hey Saeed, I firmly believe their art was meant to be interpreted by the individual. A great example of that is in the song Invincible. I'm an almost 44 year old woman with a professional systems analyst career and that song has touched me so much;I've sobbed many times listening to it. But when you interepret the lyrics at face value, nothing about the song seems like it could resonate with a 44 year old woman in my position.

    • @jesseturnip
      @jesseturnip Před 5 měsíci

      That's a 47-year-old retired paramedic with PTSD. That song brings me to tears every time. Even though like you said, the words that face value don't seem to convey that message.

    • @GimmeJimmy23
      @GimmeJimmy23 Před 5 měsíci

      Tool lyrics are very seldom meant to be taken at face value. Tool expects a little more of its fans than that. If the song resonated deeply with you, then you interpreted it correctly. 😊

    Some say this is about L. Ron Hubbard, but who knows, really? That's the genius of Maynard. His lyrics are usually oblique and open to interpretation. To me it's about someone of the false prophet kind. Maynard's longest scream is the one in The Grudge, 25 seconds. Superhuman, really. But this one is one of his best for sure.👍🤘

I used to drum a bit back then and when Danny hit that break I was like, Damn! The great thing about a Tool is that it fits the hand which welds it. Maynard gives a premise and lets the listener fill in the gaps. All on a journey if you will, and so far you have been correct about meanings to his madness. You do know Maynard has three bands which are all active. Tool, A :Perfect Circle, and Puscifer.

    Maynard has said in lyrics he'll replace other people for himself. I think in this one he's actually talking about himself. In 1996 this album had an underlying theme of killing the ego. Some ppl think it's abt L Ron Hubbard , that's too simple of an attack for him. Confronting himself plays out later in H., Jimmy, 46&2 , PushIt and Third Eye,...Stinkfist has a little reference also

    His longest scream is in the studio version of the Grudge, 25ish seconds (supposedly he was going for 27. As in Saturn's cycle). You did a live recording. So, you didn't hear the full thing. You should REALLY do the album version.

    I know people are going to come in here with the L Ron Hubbard angle but I always interpreted this as being a about Jesus and religion in general….. especially with Maynard’s early views on church. Who else claimed they would die for you (r sins) etc… He had a very tumultuous relationship with religion because when his mother had a brain aneurysm her church claimed she was being punished for her sins… she never lost faith….. but Maynard did… she spent 10,000 days ( thus the name of an album) in a wheelchair In a bad way…. When you get to wings for Marie and 10,000 days ( which need to be done together) you will see more…. Awesome as always and sorry for being so damned wordy lol😂

    I always thought the song was a sardonic appraisal about the life and death of Jesus Christ. However, Maynard usually writes in metaphors so that could mean that Jesus' life and death are mostly being used as metaphors to more broadly apply it to whomever you'd like. It's no secret though that Maynard is not a fan of Christianity; he has said as much. The song "Judith", in A Perfect Circle, seems to confirm some of those frustrations he had with his mother's religion. BUT, other songs like the 2 part/2 track song 10,000 Days is about his posthumous sentiments towards his mother and her illness -- regarding her as a mother and her stoic battle -- which seems to not be expressing his usual frustration with her religion. Rather, Maynard seems to be respectfully using the occasion of her death to say that if anyone deserved to go to heaven, it would be his mom. It is a heart breaking 2 part song that I cannot listen to without crying -- if I am reading or reciting the lyrics and/or watching someone react to this song on CZcams. It's an amazing composition! I highly recommend reacting to them both in one video reaction.
