      I think the only fair thing to do now is to set it up similar to a chess tournament. Round robin to start, where each line battles every other line twice. 1 point for the winner, 0 for the loser. To possibly cancel out any weedeater bias, they fight from both weedeaters; round 1 from the left, round 2 from the right. After the round robin round, you advance the top half of the field into a bracket where they battle for 5 rounds in each bracket; first to 3 wins and advances to the finals. Finals is a first to 5 for the win.

    Y'know what I want to know? I want to know how companies that make weedeater string test it...what do THEY think is important? Do they have neat testing setups like the tire companies use for testing tire endurance? Have you tried to get in touch with them? If you're lucky maybe you could film their test setup in high speed too...it'd be a neat comparison with your own.

    • @veespa_

    What intrigued me about your video was that the professional weed eater lines (the crossfire, stihl green line, and the husky titanium force) all had more “noodleing” my hypothesis is that the professional lines have to have more flex because you want durability around hard objects eg: trees and houses. It’s all about economics on these things and the more line you save the more money in your pocket. The downfall of the stiffened core lines is that they do not achieve a cleaner cut that is expected when maintaining properties as a professional. They are used in brush cutting applications. I also noticed that when the crossfire line broke, it was a tear at the base of the head. That was more of a head problem than a line problem. There are many different professional products that combat line tear at base like the echo speed feed 400 heads. It would be really cool if you could continue the lawn equipment series and maybe get it touch with the guys at scag mowers or walker mowers and do a video on the incredible engineering of a commercial mower deck. I love your vids and this one was especially amazing!

    • @mavericktn999
      @mavericktn999 Před 3 lety +1

      I also noticed that some lines appeared to be thicker than others, most line is available in multiple diameters so I wonder if they kept it constant across all the lines tested.

    • @benkohler3671
      @benkohler3671 Před 3 lety

      @@mavericktn999 the only problem with thicker line is that it’s very brittle, I’m surprised that it didn’t break first.

    First off I have to say I thoroughly enjoy all of the varied content you provide. You make learning things (that the average person would never expect they wanted to learn) a completely engaging experience. With that out of the way I think Trent may have been robbed. In the 2nd round of the battle between the sharp sharp square & the gray round it was determined that the gray round “broke” the sharp sharp square at the root. I believe what really happened was that the sharp sharp square was simply unwound from the spool since there was so little line left “in reserve.” Ultimately I think this would have had little impact when facing the lines with the solid core but the gray round was surely not the definitive winner in the aforementioned round.

  • @aMEWzed

  • @_Bumby_

    The interesting thing is that the losing weed eater is the force breaking the line, not the winning one. When the lines collide, a knot/twist is made, the weed eaters then need to pull that knot loose, the line which can continue the original path of the rotation the best should win most of the time because it isn’t being yanked by the weed eater to return to the original path. I think that higher density lines will ultimately prove better in this experiment simply because they will have more momentum.

    Did the footage @51:30 pinpoint the "wrapping" failure mechanism you were seeing?
    1) impact: then the more compliant line wraps around the stiffer line/object
    2) perimeter failure: as the compliant line bends, it creates a stress concentration at the outer perimeter of the line at the tight radius, pushing the outer fibers past the ultimate tensile strength.
    3) momentum increases: during "unwrapping" the end of the compromised line gains angular momentum, increasing tensile force on the line at the weakened point
    4) tensile failure: the axial force created in the line at the moment the unwrapping completes causes tensile failure (perhaps there's also a bit of a shock/fracture type load too).

(We never had one that had a pivoting head like I do now.) We also had weeds and grass that constantly grew between the cement curbs and asphalt road. This always ate through a ton of line! Often swords will have a hard edge to better keep the sharpened edge with a softer spine to allow for some flex along the length of the blade. The solid core provides extra strength while the outer material is responsible for the cutting action.

    So what you need is a Razor core vs Blob test.
    And every one of the 3 is good.

    Hi Dustin,
    Greetings from Las Vegas. 25 years in the maintenance industry, I can tell you of course the Core line Would be the better choice” 😋 but the methodology of having two Weedwhacker‘s attack each other it’s just wrong on so many levels LOL, but because of different RPMs and angle of attack, and which string Got to hit first, would determine which one would win. Should’ve attacked a nail
    Better yet a piece of chain-link fence, or a pile of dirt, and that will tell you which type of string to use and which type of situation. And when are you coming to Vegas? And when are you going to do some thing On street sweepers? And I bet you 50 bucks that you can’t find too many regulations for the darn things. Have a good day. Hug your family, And enjoy this day God has made.

    It's funny that Destin is causing an unexpected demand shift in the market through these videos. People will definitely decide which line to pick based on these videos.

    So if you'd put a solid core with the best cutting coating, you could make a tougher and more effective line.

    If any of these string producers are paying attention to these videos and the product development. Do you have the bend tinsel strength for each, and the pull apart strength. Then how close and how many hits to a solid object before it brakes. You should be able to design the perfect string.

    So what we really learned is that the best weed eater cord to use is; the cord that has a solid inner core, and the sharpest edges.?
