  • Touring a forward deployed professional arts and crafts woodshop available to Soldiers deployed to Camp Arifjan Kuwait. This woodshop is run by contractors to provide recreation for Soldiers that are stationed or deployed away from their homes. When Soldiers use these shops, they continue to receive funding, when they are not used, they are determined to be unnecessary and shut down.
    Note: I received permission to record this video while the shop was shut down due to renovation. Although in uniform, I was off-duty and acting in my personal capacity.

      Thanks for watching, Michael. Clarifying, certainly proud of my uniform and service, I just want to steer far away from Hatch act and not use my position for personal gain.

    Not too shabby there! Camp Humphreys had a nice shop but they spent my entire year there without a contractor to run it. Very frustrating!
    Welcome home!

    Thanks for letting troops know about this stuff. I spent a year in Iraq 04-05 and bought my digital camera at the PX in Arifjan. LOL They did not have this stuff then for sure. We were lucky to get MRE's then....LOL.

      Faded Prodigy, I thought the same when I learned it. Really glad to know there's one at that location. Sad to see that they're closing at a lot of places in US.

    Thank you for serving and I am glad you made it home safely.
    I enjoyed the tour, including the business discussion. I am glad that the military provides the nice facilities for the warfighters. I hope they take advantage of the opportunities.

      Those poor recruits! I wouldn't trade 9-12 months in Kuwait for access to that shop.

    Man I had no idea you were the boss lol. Also had no clue Arifjon had a shop. Passed through there on a couple of occasions and also did my BLC there. The place sucks but the shop looks legit.

    Nice video, I didn’t realize that shop was on AJ.
    DPW unfortunately won’t give lumber unless it’s an “official project.” Had to sweet talk the Class IV yard into a couple 2x8s.

      Josh, great to hear from you! I think they likely re-opened after you left, unfortunately. Pretty cool to know that it exists! I hope lots of folks take advantage now that it's open again.

    A few things. I would have loved to seen what kind of dust collector can pressurize a 12-14" trunk. Also, I totally agree with you - Why is there no (optional) outfeed tables, at least for the table saw? Lastly, you very politely brought it up, but I suspect you were screaming on the inside like I was about the lack of care on those cast-iron tops and cutters.

    • @benchtopwoodworks
      @benchtopwoodworks  Před 2 lety

      JD, I wish I would've followed that trunk to the collector; You and me both! I was very disappointed in the maintenence. I talked to the lead carpenter after. This contractor has only had the contract since the beginning of 2021, so hopefully, they improve the situation. Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your very thoughtful comments!

    Thanks for the info and tour...do you know if these (stateside) facilities are available to retirees or family members to use? My husband is retired USAF and we try staying Space A or use the FamCamp when traveling; these facilities would be great for him to check out if open to retirees. Stay safe and welcome home!

    • @benchtopwoodworks
      @benchtopwoodworks  Před 2 lety

      Patricia, I don't know for certain, but I assume they are open to retirees. Most on post facilities grant full access for retirees. The location at my current post (stateside) closed this past year so I won't be able to check with them, but a friend confirmed they were open to family members. Thanks for watching, and the comment. I hope you have a facility available to you. Thank you for everything your husband and family have done!
