Caged Bearings - Which Direction Do They Go?

- I show how to figure out the right way to install caged/retainer bearings so they are in the correct orientation in headsets, bottom brackets, or hubs. It really depends on the cage as to which way is up and which way is down. It doesn't matter if it is a headset, bottom bracket, or wheel hub. They all have cups and cones.

I have a two hundred dollar mongoose brawler BMX bike and the cage bearings got crushed for the rear hub how should I go about getting it fixed?
@@Drewskii-ridez Replace them. czcams.com/video/8rskB6afPLE/video.html
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! I dont subscribe to many channels. But you saved me from having to annoy my boyfriend by asking him these questions. So I subscribed. Thank you.
This is a brilliant video. You answer not just "what" but "why". You genuinely 'teach a man to fish'. Thanks for what you do.
God bless this man and his teaching skills thanks man you saved me hours of aggravation
Amen!!! the god of internet bike repairs jajaja
Looked at hundreds of videos, my headset was installed backwards it didn't turn smoothly, Finally I come across this simple video. Thanks man, lots of morons out there with click baits.
Very good channel
Almost 3 years now and your video is still useful and will probably be for many years.
Thanks so much for this info, you saved me hours of my time and money thrown at my bike. I had replaced my stem and handle bars but being a noob I had no clue my fork was going to fall out when I took the stem cap bolt out. Bearings, seals, spacers, cups whatever you call all of it when all over the floor. This is the video that got my headset back together without play in it. God bless.
I'm overhauling an old road bike for the first time in my life. Your videos are helping sooo much! Thanks you! Hope you are still keeping it on. Greetings from Germany
Dude, you saved me from caving and getting a Cane Creek 110. In just a few minutes I went from someone just trying to put stuff back the way he found it to actually understanding how the bearings interface with the races. Cheers
Great video as always, RJ! I think understanding the cup and cone concept is all that's needed to get the cages in the correct order.
Thank you so much! Instead of just showing which way this particular piece goes you explained the principle that will help figure stuff out no matter what I'm fixing!
Thank you I’ve been working on these headset bearing for days and couldn’t seem to get it right till I watched your video
Thank you. It’s a nice reminder that it helps to know the role of each component on a bicycle. Cycle maintenance shouldn’t be a prescriptive one-method-suits-all hobby.
I’ll admit I knew about the issues with ball races, and in my own bikes I’ll replace the hub races with loose grade-25 bearings. With headsets it’s easier to keep the races but then they’re a lot more tolerant of wear.
Cheers
RJ the Bike Guy is the go to for us vintage bike mechanics. It's not about how much you paid for your bike ...but how much you'll save.
I would have installed these backwards. Thanks for this!
Thank You for showing me how to reason out and decide which side of the cage bearing to use when servicing the bottom bracket and headset.
thanks so much, I couldn't work out how to reinstall my fork bearings, this teaches me to think about it deeper and you explained how and why
Thanks man, i was quite sure about which way i needed to install the bearings but it's always great to get some reassurance!
Excellent video and description. And now we will have a simple video that should come up when we do a search online when we forget. Thanks.
These kinds of videos are the reason why I love CZcams. Thank you for posting! I'm swapping out a headset tomorrow, and the bit arrived all mixed up. You've just helped put my mind at ease!
Awesome explanation! I needed a video to double check my work for my bottom bracket and this was perfect, thank you!!
Thank you, I literally am replacing my fork, took out all these peaces, and realized these ball bearings had a cage to it and did not know how to put it back together. This helped tremendously!
I’m building up a frame for the first time and was stuck figuring this part out. Thanks, RJ! Your video on a DIY fork crown race tool and star nut setter till were also really helpful.
Every time, and I mean every single time, I wonder how to do something with bikes I try CZcams and RJ delivers. This channel and these videos are amazing.
wonderful explanation, thank you,
Thank you sir, from Philippines🇵🇭
Thank you for not just showing the correct way to do things, but also for taking the time to explain the reason behind it.
Thank you! I disassembled my headset and neglected to note which way the bottom bearing went. None of the other headset service videos go over this so thanks for answering my question!
Hopefully an upside down bearing is why my headset seems sticky..
A very rare, very useful information, explained with great clarity! Thank you so much ❤❤!!
Thank you for sharing R. J., great video n easy explanation 👍👌☺
Your video have helped me for fix my headset problem . Thank you so much ❤️😊
Very useful, especially for the second type of headset bearing retainers which exactly match mine. I thought I had done it wrong and was beginning to doubt my sanity.
Thanks for all your contributions. I keep restoring bikes with your help. Thank you!
hey, found this video really useful while rebuilding a vintage Raleigh mtb! cheers!!
Very well explained, nothing works better than a practical demo.
This video can you a lot of money if you ever need to do this repair! So why the thumbs down people? Great video, thanks for sharing!
I am now a HUGE FAN RJ...I am PJ...lol...Been rebuilding a 1999 Marin Rocksprings, and your attention to detail is sensational...THANK YOU,,,,Those old forks...OMG...What a challenge...LOL
This is the SECOND time you have helped me today!!!!!!!
One of my headset bearings had got knocked out of order and I wasn't sure which way round to put it on reassembly.
I thought I was assuming the correct way and I was, but I had to be sure.
Thanks ONCE AGAIN for helping me!
Subbed.
Great info RJ, on Vintage 70's Schwinns the bearing cages will not seat properly if installed on the wrong side, you will instantly notice the uneven seating against the races, just make sure to test before greasing the surfaces.
Very useful explanation RJ , never thought that there is an optimum way to put the caged bearings. Thanks lot .
Thanks! Explained exactly what I was wondering.
Thanks mate. You just cleared my confusion with the Lowe Bracket bearing.
Thanks for this video! I actually saw a number of supposedly sage bike tubers insert them backwards! So gotta be wary always!
Good job. I've installed a few wrong myself. Never again. Thanks
excellent break down RJ. 👌🏼 understanding the actual parts we have distinguish the direction they must go!
Thank you, RJ The Bike Guy this video helped me out.
Really good and useful video. Thank you.
Thanks bro. That is very clear explanation. Very helpful video.
Thanks, this little piece of advice has really helped, especially as of course I didn’t note which way the parts of my headset were positioned just before they fell out and rolled all over the floor.
Simple clear explanation
Thank you
This is the video I needed. Thank you!
Just changed headset caged bearings today, and I have slight movement will check after watching this informative video thumbs up
Thanks mate this was really helpful!
Really useful. Great to check on something that seems simple but isn't. Thanks for posting.
0.24$ for hub bearing,.... 0.48$ for steering,.... 0.97$ for bottom bracket bearings each near my house in Bangalore,... india,....
caged bearing/zali bearings help for faster assembly, whereas the loose balls setup works just fine,..... just i case they drop down during assembly and we do not have clean ones to spare,... have been doing this self help from age six in my house mini cycles to two wheelers,. so on,.... various gadgets that use them,...
Thank u so much man I was doing this wrong for years today I came to know why my handle was not smooth
Thank you very much. This is a very complicated topic as you said.
Thank you RJ!! Your videos always get me out of sticky situations!
Thank you for all your videos, they helped me so many times
Thanks RJ. Nice, clear answer.
1 minute in I already had the ohhh damnnn moment 😅🙌🏽🙌🏽
straight to the point, great explanations, thank you sooo much !!
as usual, had a problem, typed the problem in and wouldnt you believe it RJ pulls through once again!
Your video was very helpful 😊
Oops. Now I'll have to double check my install. Thanks for the video. Follow up question, It looks like the race on the axle in your example is pitted. Would that need to be replaced? Do they still make that kind of bottom bracket axles?
You saved me again, dude.
Thanks man. I can always use good info. I miss working in a bike shop. Hands on work.
Amazing... Spot on explanation ... Thank You!
Nice job RJ, simple and to the point, thanks!
Thanks R J, always such informative video’s.
Bro u just helped me out so much. Thank u dude .
Got an old school mid 80s bike question for you. Will the bearings on top of the head tube face in towards the tube. The flat part facing up towards the handle bars? On the bottom, the balls will face up towards the the head tube and the flat spot near the wheel? Thank you
Thank you very much 🙏 straight to the point.
Thank you!! This really helped me out!
I have suntour vintage bb
Open original suntour bb and it is the opposite from your example.
whichever orientation allows you to screw more of the cup into the bottom bracket shell is the correct orientation.
Follow the video. Different caged bearings are different.
Thank you so much!! Very very helpful!!!
Thankyou!~ Superb explanation
Thanks for this. Confirmed it barely moves back to front.
Thank you so much! I just realized i installed mine backwards 🤦♂️
Thanks for the video i have a question i have to overhaul my head set and i don't have caged bearings can i use lose bearings and grease? Would that work? providing that I put one or two extra bearings
This video is very helpful .... Thank you
thank youuuu, you just saved my fork! i put the bearings upside down, and it made a disgusting grinding as i turned
A big thankyou man My bottom braket needs repairs
thanks a lot ! i was looking for that information!!!
You saved me from destroying my bottom bracket👍👍👍Thank you so much😎😎
Thank you for the information!
thanks for explanation, it was very usefull.
Thank you for another excellent video with clear information.
Perfectly explained thank you!
What a great video. Thanks so much :)
Thank you so much , forgot which way the bearing should face, now I know!
Thanks for the verification!
I had a problem with a bearing like the second example you showed. The opening was ever-so-slighlty smaller than the original one so it was scratching the crown race... I ended up putting free bearings which I guess is better anyways.
The video is very useful. thanks
Nicely done. Thanks
The best explanation ever!!!!
Thanks RJ, great info and easily explained!
Thanks!
Brilliant, thank you so much.
RJ your the best!
Hello RJ the bike guy. Our daughter blew out the rear bearing in her schwinn elm kids bike. It's an oddball size wheel ("18) but the hub may be a more common size, not sure. The bearing is all mangled up and hard to figure out a replacement size. :(:( Bike shop turned up their nose at us. Gave me some loose bearings but i think they may be wrong size (too small). Any suggestions? TY!
Very helpful good sir
Omg RJ you cannot imagine how much confusion you solved by making this video. Thanks for that but i have one question. Do i have to replace the cage along with the bearings or reusing the old one will do?
I usually replace the whole thing. But it can be tough to find a matching set of caged bearings sometimes, so I have replaced the balls on occasion.
@@RJTheBikeGuy thank you sir!
