Very cool. The collection of equipment of a Soviet soldier during the Afghan war corresponds to reality by 100 %. These items are becoming rare while they can still be found, but after a while they will only be seen in a Museum.

wow! great collection! downloading 9th battalion now. I was a kid in the eighties and always fascinated by the USSR. I have a few Naval items I got from a Ukraine ebay seller that had stuff from Sevastopol, home of the black sea fleet, including a 2 meter long naval ensign that looks very weathered
Though not perfect, this should at least be the bare standard for everyone wanting to get into Soviet-Afghan war reenacting. The only thing "wrong" I can spot is the lack of emblem on your collar but everything else is considered acceptable for the period. I am jealous of your community, being the only guy that gets all the correct gear is pretty boring where I live.

@@humansvd3269 you know airsoft or cosplay it’s not problem,but in “reenactment” or “collection” it become problem. Why so many ppl still misunderstand is people only research in English and hardly ever to contact any Russian sources. Well I think it’s common problem among many country.

They were widely used when they looted them off of enemy forces or they crafted their own chest rig
@@frostydrifter ok if you were US soldier of vietnam war,you have captured ak47,which is good competitor of m16. wll you and your collague use ak47 instead of m16? maybe not. it's same as 56 chest rig in afghanistan. soviet soldiers may sometimes use 56 rig or home made rig but it was not "widely".

My father was there as an NCO of VDV recon unit. Participated in raids to eliminate or capture Mujahideen personnel.
He once told me about the same Mujahid that he personally captured four or five times. You see, Soviet troops (as per protocol) were handling captive Mujahideen to local Afghani authorities, which just so happened to be extremely corrupt and kept setting guerrillas free for a bribe.
On fourth or fifth time, that Mujahid was injured and bled to his death in the convoy truck.

Glad to have finally found a video on this. I don’t know if you were there, but there’s a tank show in Virginia every September and I went there about two years ago and met and spoke with a few of the guys I’ve seen in the “Red Divide” video. I’ve been assembling an Afghan and Chechen war kits for a few years now and would always like some pointers. I’m not a serious impressionist I just use the kit for airsoft so I don’t have an RD-54 or E-tool (maybe in the future), as well as the winter Afghanka. A few questions I have though are on the Afghanka uniform. Mine in particular I was able to find at a surplus store a few years ago and fits perfectly. My only question on it though is that it appears to be a much darker shade than the normal M88, almost like a brown. Do you think it’s a post war or late war production or just discoloration due to age? And for Chechen war kits are they relatively similar? For mine I use a set of M88s in VSR 93 pattern, and then all the armor and web gear from the Afghan kit besides throwing a KZS helmet cover on the SSh-68. Sorry if I’m spamming the fuck out of your comment section with an essay but I haven’t been able to find much help because I deleted my Facebook a few months back.
Not the dude who posted the video, and I can’t really help too much, but uh to me your Chechnya kit sounds pretty accurate, I’m not too sure about the helmet cover though. The discoloration may be due to age or it’s possibly a repro, but it should be ok. And yes the Afghankas will work for Afghan and Chechnya. For additional help, I’d recommend asking on r/reenactors if you have Reddit, there’s many people on there who can help.

where did you find your oversuit?
KLMKs are pretty common to find on Ebay. Usually go for around $30-40
the rd54 backpack is setup very poorly.
its a rare sight to see an unmodified rd45 backpack in afghanistan, almost every soldier added more pouches to the outside of the pack either by sewing the belt pockets to it, or most commonly another rd-54 on top of another one.
besides that the sternum strap is mounted too low and the dangling straps would be removed in most cases and used as utility straps for the backpack as means of attaching the poncho to the pack, since it was too big to fit in a side pocket.
also armor vests were not very common, mostly spotted are either chicom rigs or improvised chest rigs made with the rd-54 pouches sewn together.
the uniform cover or partizan suit was only worn in the hot weather since it provided more ventilation than the afghanka uniform.
in conclusion: soviet gear in afghanistan was anything but stantard, so you can pull out your sewing machines and start sewing shit to other shit until you achieve your preferred kit.
In my opinion this theme is a very interesting one because it lets you tailor your gear to your preferences while being historically accurate.
I was wondering what the field radios you see them with are called, the ones with the really tall antenna. I think it's worn on the back, I'm not sure though.

I did look on eBay but to be honest I found it difficult to find what I was looking for. I had a look for helmets and I'll need to find out how sizing is done as my head is on the larger end of the spectrum if memory serves.

You're probably not gonna find it all in one place. Ebay is a great source, as are Russian surplus websites. Facebook Marketplace is also very good.

Hmm, does a KZS-1 suit work as well? I've seen them pop out in Afghanistan with the KLMK oversuits as well.

I have been interested in building out my soviet afghan uniform so this video has been helpful. However i have seen that the fitting of russian clothes is quit different than that of US. Does russian clothing run big? Where is the best place to look for russian afghan war uniforms online aside from ebay? Just wondering where you have found most of your gear.

All Grey Shop Afghan era surplus is overpriced garbage in my opinion. You're much better off hunting down the real items. Will also save you money

Well, I would say that the invasion was a result of the incompetence of the Politburo during that time. Many innocent Afghans and Russian conscripts lost there lives so it's important to take note of how conflicts like these can be avoided.
@@_xleepy_ The Politburo were initially hesitant to intervene in Afghanistan (despite the wishes of Taraki, and later Amin himself) because they realised it would be costly; not just in economic terms or in blood, but also politically. Brezhnev in particular was concerned about the effects it would have on Soviet-U.S. relations-no doubt détente would be scrapped, as would SALT II-but considering the U.S. were already stoking the Afghan flames as early as May, it meant little in hindsight.

It's camouflage. Soviets issued oversuits instead of camoflauge uniforms.

Same but SVD rifle instead of AK, or VSS if special unit. And often no bulletproof vest, cause to big weight. also the soviet pouches for svd mag’s.
@@gopniksraena8080 VSS appeared in the late 1987, so it will be really hard to see some during the Afghan War, but you can see pleny of them during the 1st & the 2nd Chechen War.

Česť práci! In-between WWII and cold war the tactics and concepts of Soviet snipers changed quite a lot.
The WWII version of mostly stationary sniper waiting for valuable targets still existed, but the primary long-range combat role was put on the shoulders of marksmen.
Marksmen were part of every unit. They used the exact same gear as other soldiers, as they had to keep moving with the unit and blend in so that the enemy doesn't notice them at first. That's why the only major difference was the weapon - SVD. The marksmen also sometimes chose to carry less gear to allow them quicker movement and less potential for giving up their position. It's not a rule though, as it was more of a matter of personal choice.
Marksman's role is to eliminate enemy soldiers, ideally at this exact order:
1. Radio operators and officers
2. Machine gunners
3. Snipers, rocket launcher dudes and other dangerous specialised troops
4. The rest of the enemy's unit

I got a reproduction 6B3 vest and it doesn’t have the cut out for the equipment belt. I’m going to modify it so I can use the belt, and I was wondering if you could give me any information on where the cuts behind the magazine pouches should be, and how the belt will go across the back of the vest?
Those repro 6b3s from greyshop are honestly pretty shitty. They're made of the wrong material and are easy to spot. You can get a real one for the same price as those

They are considered to be heroes, respected war veterans. The monuments are built for died soldiers of Afghan war.

They got treated like crap form what I read: Pretty much like Vietnam. It went from being a patriotic war to the new generation treating them like they shouldn’t have been there.
Corruption was rife in the army, recruits were hazed relentlessly and families often got little to no closure.
Though much of my knowledge comes from The Boys in Zinc and Afghantzy which, being popular enough to be translated as mainstream English books, are probably skewed somewhat.
If anyone knows other books with accounts of the average Russian soldier (past or present) then please let me know. It’s hard to find as many accounts as there are ones of nato troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Original soviet laceup boots are fairly uncommon here and tend to fall apart easily so these are just stand ins

Don't buy the 6b3 armor from grey-shop though, it's not even made in the correct materials.

That was and Is a word for a form of relationship between those servicemen who almost done their tour and fresh cherry meat. Why you wearing KLMK on uniform? Soviet soldiers wear only maskalat or only uniform, because in Afghanistan is hot, sometimes trousers from uniform and smock from maskalat. Belt is incorrect, should have copper buckle. Boots is incorrect too of course, but i understand, original boots is very rare.
I have many reference pictures showing vdv wearing there klmk over the uniform. Also subdued belts were preferred to the parade belts with the copper belt buckle because of the non-reflective coating
@@_xleepy_ Not exactly, soviet soldiers not used belts with camouflage buckles except a few cases but Afghanistan DRA army wear a soviet camouflage belts. Reflective coating is not a big problem because often belts were worn under a bulletproof vest as a belt for trousers. Copper, brown belt is not a parade belts in Soviet Army, parade belts has white color and copper buckle. Wearing a maskalat on the uniform is also a rare exception in Afghanistan, outside of Afghanistan it was often worn this way. I also have a many pictures and uniforms from this war, i collecting them for 10 years.

@@szurawi1522 This video is supposed to serve as a tool to help someone start an impression that doesn't know the correct nomenclature for equipment pieces or know about the conflict in general. I state that I encourage them to find reference photos and build an impression based on that.
@@_xleepy_ On the first photo they have a copper buckles. Maskalat worn on the uniform is a rare exception in Afghanistan. Out of several thousand, I have only a few similar photos.
Context: after the Saur Revolution happened in 1979 and a socialist govt was established in Afghanistan, the CIA got wind of this and started funding those mujahideen groups in an effort to topple the socialist revolutionaries. Then the Soviet Union gets wind of this and sends troops to the region, in which they eventually withdraw because the mujahideen groups were funded by the most powerful military to ever exist, so they had better equipment. Don’t believe me? Two words. Operation Cyclone.
