Ukraine frontline report: The deadly new weapon of drone warfare | BBC News

- čas přidán 6. 09. 2024
- Ukraine is engaged in the bleak future of war, with both sides using remotely-operated drones to strike individual soldiers, army positions and other targets with deadly speed and precision.
With the frontline largely static and soldiers dug in, drones have become the new means of attack, with both Russian and Ukrainian forces seeking to gain an advantage using the new technology.
Russia has the advantage in numbers: six drones for every Ukrainian one, although Ukraine’s drone teams say they have the technological edge and are quicker at finding ways to counter-attack and jam Russian drones.
Jane Hill presents a BBC News at Ten special frontline report by Quentin Sommerville in Lyptsi in north-east Ukraine.

@@alanmalan3819, I don't think Argentina and Ireland had wars in 21 century. As to other ones mentioned, true, but few of those saw as much innovation as in the war we have to suffer from in Ukraine. @@greengoo4575 I think they will complementary each other, especially if the more advanced drones becomes more like EW resistant cruise missiles on the cheap.
Perhaps only as scouts sending coordinates back to the drone command centre - or - store them if there're active EW systems or the drone needs to be radio silent.
Drones are also used to guide artillery strikes.
Artillery is still useful because a lot of drones have quite low payloads. Artillery is still important when you need a big punch- take out a bunker etc
The damage you saw on that building that was clearly caused by artillery and yet somehow artillery isn't the king of battle anymore?

How to take off the drones is mysterious. How far is the RC radio signal to control the drone, is another. Russian seems not to spot drones but drop massive bombs above RC controllers.
russians still have powerful jamming systems. So if at the beginning those drones usually was used at default frequencies, today in takes a lot of tweaks to make sure that your drone is able to fly in russians rear to hit something. Ukrainians also have drones detectors, but it isn't so useful today. Basically it's screams every time as it detect the signals in specific frequency of a drone nearby. But nowadays it's could constantly screaming at some frontline, because there are tons of FPV-drones at different frequencies, big reconnaissance wing-drones, DJI Mavics and similar drones, and large bombers as in the video. Also, nowadays Ukrainians tweaks FPV drones and use it as cheap replacement for AA missiles, to shot down russian reconnaissance wing-drones.
12 hours old but 3 weeks out of date?
Wow. That is just terrifying. All Started from the V1doodlebug technology all the way up to this! crazy
Who else thought they were using murder-bots… independent drones?
They are using some independent systems on some drones that kick in if the connection is severed but only if a target was approved prior to the connection was lost. This will soon evolve to fully independent war bots, as the Ukrainians do not have the luxury to debate the ethics of it. It depends how strong jamming tech goes. If it gets to good, we will get murder bots.
Small semi-autonomous drones like the Switchblade 300 cost $80k each and deliver worse results than a $300 FPV drone piloted by a human. Even the big bomber drones are only $10k with night vision.
@@the_rzhWhen adding the munition and remote detonator to an FPV drone, the cost comes north of $3,000, and results are varied with FPV drones too.
There are many ways they can be counteracted, hence why artillery is still the king of the battlefield.
Ukraine already uses autonomous AI drones. But they are used to get past drone jamming and navigate deep into Russia to hit targets. Ukraine is currently testing AI swarm drones against infantry & vehicles in the traning camps and some on the battle field, but its not ready to be released yet.

The introduction of drones also seems to have made any form of offensive very, very difficult. As soon as you put armour out in the open it becomes very vulnerable. There no military solution to this war. There has to a political process and both sides are going to have to make uncomfortable concessions.
Same as in WW1. The defensive weapons were better than the offensive ones. And you get into trench warfare territory.
Russia's superpower is the ability to soak damage and keep on going. They have a lot more poor people to send into the grinder, so I'd be very surprised if we see any peace here for many years.
The Russians are still managing.
Russia has adapted - Turtle tanks with added armour and EW jammers, extensive surveillance across the frontline with the addition of precision artillery to hit operator hideouts... also now, stormtroopers have jamming kit backpacks, shotguns that shoot kevlar meshes and even motorbikes. All these steps reduce the effectiveness... They are now even drone teams that hunt other drones.
They will never be a solution for it - but since October 2023, Russia has proven that attacks are still achievable, if you plan properly.

@@HorusHerotic yes it is reality, but dehumanizing russians and spreading hatred is in no way OK. Also why are videos showing Drones killing ukranians taken down? Seems like the rules apply only when it suits the people in charge.
@@olliesmusic2586 i still dont get it. Rules are there for a reason and should apply to everyone. And this is indecent content 100% no question about it.

Brits are quick to understand who the enimy is, Americans struggle with rational thinking.
Observing this all developing, it is true. Deep respect for British services understanding the bigger picture faster and being decisive and proactive. That touched me many times since 2022.
But sad nothing was done to Putin in 2014, there wouldn’t be this war then.
Some Americans brainswashed with Maga TrumpThink, worshipping an irrational idiot as an icon of freedumb.
Yeah north Korea weapons

BBC...why are you lying peoples? How many more days can you lie?😂
Wished they’d stop “droning on” about this subject
Why are these Russian Soldiers always alone in a field when hit by these Drone Bombs? Are the Ukraine Army executing POW's?
You need to give yourself up when becoming a POW not go around carrying your weapon as if ready to murder people. Stop making excuses for the perpetrators. They aren't POW's.
How are they POWs? 🤡
