How to Create Timeline Chart in Excel Quickly and Easily

- Timeline chart is a type of chart that visually shows the chronological sequence of past or future events on a timescale. It is mainly used in project management for showing milestones, deadlines and other significant dates and events of a project. Timeline chart can also be used in other areas and professions to illustrate the chronology of key events and developments.
In this tutorial, you'll see how to create a timeline chart in Excel quickly and easily.
Note: This tutorial uses Excel 2016. In other Excel versions, there may be some slight differences in the described steps.

Thanks for the tutorial; was quick and easy to follow. Suggestion - filling in the x-axis with white color would prevent the lines going down from crossing over the month labels. Makes it look like the line is going behind.

Hi there. First of all: thank you for a short, yet very helpful and easy to learn tutorial. One question I still like to ask: How can I implemet dates from the era b.c. ("negative dates")? I really like to make a history timeline that covers more that a couple of months or years. I couldn't find any helpful information yet. Thanks for your consideration.

Thank you for the great video. I have a question: how to make the time line by year, not month? I created a column with year, in numbers of course, but it didn't turn out correctly. The years just didn't show up in the horizontal axis.
I had the same problem using excel 365. Instead of months Jan, Feb etc I wanted 1950, 1951, 1952 etc. I changed different field formats to general, number or even tried a text format?. Still no solution. I also made sure “Event height” field was a number field. If I used the data in the example the chart worked as it should.
Excellent video and printable instructions which were very well written. I just need to overcome some quirk in excel.
One question is how to use the chart format, ie copy to other excel sheets and use different sets of data over other year ranges.?

Your tutorial doesn't work when the dates are in numbers like year.
