I’ve been Principal Trumpet playing Tschaik’s 5th on two separate occasions, and toured Europe back in 2013 playing it. Brilliant and emotional piece of music which holds a special place with me.

I just finished a comparison listening session of Tchikovsky's 5th by 7 conductors. This is the first time I ever listened to it so attentively and deeply and was extremely moved by the emotional expression throughout. I finally had to get out the score to try to figure out how he achieved some of the amazing timbre combinations (a Tchaikovsky speciality) -- just an amazing variety of instrument combinations and variations. In particular, from bar 240 in mvt I, come a series of descending runs that are punctuated by a bar of piano swelling to forte low bass growl that has to be one of the most visceral expressions in music---it really sounds orgasmic to me. What an aural imagination Tchaikovsky had!! Even among Russian composers who are known for their colorful orchestration, in my mind, Tchaikovsky definitely stands out for his complex and precise combinations and variations of instrumental timbres.
