What You Don't Know About White Castle's Famous Sliders

  • Before McDonald’s and Burger King were selling fast food burgers, there was White Castle and its famous sliders. The iconic restaurant opened way back in 1921, and fast food history was made. The burgers haven’t changed too much in the 100 years since, but a few alterations have been made in the name of getting food out even quicker. Of course, the chain got a major boost when it was referenced in the title of the first Harold and Kumar film, but they were originally supposed to go somewhere else. Here are some things you probably didn’t know about White Castle’s famous sliders.

@Jim Clark actually, that's not really a Duh. When I bought the frozen ones, I hated the taste and thought they were terrible. but, my husband told me to go with him to an actual restaurant in Chicago, IL (I'm from Fort Worth, Tx) and give it another shot. HUGE difference in taste. If I didn't listen to my husband, I would've assumed that it was one of the worst based off the frozen ones in the box.

Still remember the contest my high school friend and I had at White Castle... Cheeseburgers were 30c each then. Our contest was to see who could eat the most, no barfing allowed, had to win by two and the loser paid. Prior to consumption, you had to use a ketchup packet to inscribe a unique letter of the alphabet you had not used yet on the burger. If somehow you finished the alphabet, you won instantly.
Ended up losing 14 to 12 when I realized that there was no way my friend was going to let me win.

I am a bit disappointed that they do sell the frozen double cheeseburger, those were my favorite with cheese fries!

Very accurate and succinct report. (I did some research on this earlier.) Whatever you might think of fast food, the White Castle guys were marketing geniuses whose impacts are still felt nearly 100 years later, over much of the world. Their operation would probably be far larger, but they never really adopted the franchising model.

Don't label me a hater here just for having a contrary opinion. Those who love White Castle, keep on loving them. I first heard of White Castle from my mother, who was born and raised in the Midwest. I was in St. Louis back in 1992 and my brother-in-law and myself decided to go to dinner at White Castle. I was shocked at how bad the meal was. Among multi state major chains In N Out has the best burger and they are ahead of White Castle by tens of factors. I live in a rural county in the western U.S. and 25 miles to the north is a mom and pop hamburger (and much more) place makes them just a little bit better than In N Out, but not by much. Since 1992 I shake my head when I think of White Castle, but hey, to each their own.

Krystal has been around since 1932, only eleven years younger than White Castle. It's not a knock-off. Yes, it was started after the restaurant owner had tried White Castle. However, they're similar, yet a bit different. Other than in Tennessee and Kentucky, their stores do not overlap. Krystal is in Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and one store in North Carolina and one in Virginia, as I recall. White Castle is generally in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, New York, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Tennessee and Kentucky.

It's a 150 mile trek for me to get some sliders into my mouth. In a pinch, there is fast food burger you can order with no ketchup, no mustard, with pickles and double onion that comes pretty close to a slider. Not quite as greasy and the bun does not have the onion infused flavor, but it's close enough to take the edge off.

I live in Oklahoma, so the closest I get to a White Castle slider is the grocery store, yet the reheated ones don't taste good at all.
I feel like I'm missing out.

If you want to cook them at home, use a broiling pan with water underneath and cook them open like they do in the restaurants. It gets you pretty close. Also, hey mashed, let's be honest, if you're over 25 you know White Castle because of the Beastie Boys! "We've got determination bass and highs, White Castle fries only come in one size." I'm pretty sure this led every teenager on the east coast to see got a White Castle somewhere in New York at some point. My first White Castle experience was in Brooklyn and it was delicious. Cheers!

Up here in WA we dont have many (if any) White Castles, which is funny because I've ate there before and didn't notice they had square patties! I thought that was a Wendy's thing.

Frozen White Castle's aren't the same thing, but it's sure easier to walk to the fridge than to take a flight back East. Besides, thin burgers should be cooked from frozen anyway. If you worked in any restaurant, you'd prefer frozen to storage at fridge temperatures.

Equssisme, in my opinion and in the opinion of almost everyone I've talked to regarding this place is because their burgers are terrible. There are a huge number of very good hamburger places in Washington, Oregon and California, both in chains and independents. I tried them once, against my father's advice, who grew up in the Midwest, and had the worst burgers I've ever had.

Because it's a family-owned private company (including their supply chain) that has chosen from the very beginning to follow a very conservative growth strategy. If you're not born or married into the family, you can't buy a franchise at any price.

White Castle “Slyders” are square because the shape lets more patties cover the cooking surface than the regular round kind.
