- Here is my Top Ten video nasties as of 8/3/24.
Also I have a quick run through of all my 4k nasties and I finally take off some of my prized shrink wrap from one of the titles :-)

You know I love a chat on video nasties John! Seeing you with the Arrow Argento box sets makes me very jealous that I only have the standard editions 😂 I still can't quite believe that the fifth generation bootleg VHS copies of films we used to pass around at school are now not only readily available, but in the highest quality possible.
Hi Steve, yeah love to gas about one of my favourite subjects Steve 😁👌 I knew when these were announced I had to get them! I've kept the blu ray boxsets for now, might move them on in the future but not these Argento 4ks!! Obviously a dream (that will NEVER happen) would be to have ALL of his movies from 71 to around 92 in this similar edition! Imagine how would they look on the shelves!! ❤️❤️🤩🤩 I always think that myself Steve! And I do think we owe Mary Whitehouse and big debt of gratitude, if it hadn't been for her ridiculous interviews and pontificating these movies might of faded into the mist!! 🫡🤣🤣 cheers Mazza, you interfering old #&*% 🤣🤣🤣👌👌👌

As a 90s teen I loved the whole concept of 'video nasties'. It made watching them even more scary. I had a friend who was able to get a hold of some of them through car boot sales, like Faces of Death. Although I was traumatised by the animal cruelty and sexual violence in Cannibal Holocaust, so I think the censors did kind of have a point.
Some of the films are so tame and very boring, by today's standards.
I do think there was something special about the 90s VHS era, I used to love going to the video shop and looking at all the amazing horror covers (and the films never lived up to the covers!).
Great comment mate 🤩👍 yeah it was a very different time wasn't it!! 😵💫🤩 I do think that the titles and covers always made the film out to be the most shocking thing you would ever see!! But generally it didn't live up to the hype 🤔🥴🤣 there was some REALLY shocking ones it has to be said 🤯 but a lot were banned without anybody looking at them and maybe the title alone got it banned e.g Axe....nothing in it but the title raised the eye of the censors with pressure put on them by politicians 🙄🤣 can't beat going into the video shop and seeing those covers!! Flashback to the tracking on my old Ferguson and it is amazing to be able to pick these up legit after the kerfuffle back in the day!!!

The quality of the Suspiria 4K is honestly out of this world. The picture and sound are immersive and some of the very best of the format

I remember getting a video in 1980 and I was 5 at the time. It was the Wild West of anything goes until the Act came in a few years later. I even remember the Evil Dead and Exorcist being banned. The Burning was a film that I saw as a kid and always remember when Cropsy pops up with the sheers and takes fingers off. Also the original I spit on your grave. I remember the bath scene when the guy loses his little fella in revenge 😀
It was a totally crazy time in the early 80s mate!! 😱😱 everything was under scrutiny 🤯🤯 they wanted to ban Tom and Jerry at one time as they thought kids would copy the violence on it 😬😬🤣 Cropsy was such an amazing character!! Can't understand why there wasn't a sequel or remake of The Burning 😵💫 ahh yes the bath scene was a crazy one for sure!! 🫣😱🤣🤣 cheers for watching mate 🤩🤩👍👍

I am a bit of a Video Nasty fanatic too, having said that I only count the DPP list of 72 as proper Nasties that were prosecuted back in the early 80's.
I have been trying to collect all the UK pre-cert DPP 72 Nasties on both Betamax and VHS... it has been a very expensive endeavour! I still have a long way to go.
A lot of the old UK pre-cert tapes were cut, Zombie Creeping Flesh has about 12 minutes missing
There are some great 4k's of Video Nasties and I would like to see as many released as possible but we know a few will likely never make the jump to 4k because the original negatives are lost/destroyed like Blood Rites, Delirium, Don't Go Near the Park, Don't Look in the Basement, Exposé, Fight for Your Life, Forest of Fear, Frozen Scream, Mardi Gras Massacre, Revenge of the Bogeyman, Unhinged and The Witch Who Came From the Sea.
Don't Go Near the Park, Fight for Your Life, Frozen Scream, Revenge of the Bogeyman and Unhinged have not even made the jump from DVD to Blu-ray yet.
Since The Burning is an MGM film I hope either 88 Films or Arrow can release a 4k over here, it's one of the better made films on the Video Nasties list.
I am sure most of the Video Nasties will make it to 4k either here or in the US, these films just seem very popular, they seem to sell and are very marketable.
88 Films and Arrow are our main hope for more 4k Nasties here in the UK, I don't import myself (although I have one US 4k release which I bought from eBay, Suspiria which is never getting a UK release and is a very nice looking disc as you point out) as that is an expensive business and half of the releases I do buy seem to sit on the shelf for months before I get around to watching them anyway so it's not like I have a shortage of films to put on.

@@MondoChelloveckMovies funnily enough Severin just announced a 4k release of Nightmare Maker today so there's another Video Nasty making the jump to 4k, I think there's a good chance Severin could release it here, Nightmare Maker has not had a release here in the UK since the 1982 pre-cert tape from Atlantis.
I really wish the original camera negative for Unhinged could be found, I know many hate it but I really like it and for it to be stuck on DVD with an ancient early 80's SD tape master makes me sad, I think it deserves better.
I wish either 88 Films or Arrow had managed to snag the UK rights for Flesh for Frankenstein rather than Screenbound as I think we would have seen a 4k release of it from one of them, although I will happily admit Screenbound's recently released Blu-ray is very good in it's own right.
And yeah, watching a film like Zombie Creeping Flesh, House by the Cemetery or House on the Edge of the Park in 4k with HDR often feels surreal to me, so clear, filmic, colourful, detailed and in their original ratios with wonderfully refined and resolved grain.
I know we talk about watching these films during the early and mid 80's on VHS in the past but if you think about it that was 40 years ago! Almost half a decade, at this point I would have been very disappointed if we were still watching them on VHS and nothing that gets announced for a 4k surprises me now.
And I agree about 8k, the technology is available (the PS5 has an 8k equipped drive) but there is currently zero consumer content, I can't see 8k as commercially viable for any boutique label now or in the future.
I agree with you here Paul, Nightmare maker is one I'm after as I have never seen it 🤔🤩🤩👍👍 glad I never went for the hard to find blu ray 😬🤩 I'm glad they have been rediscovered by boutique labels, they do seem to spend that extra care and attention that big companies don't seem to bother with! In a way I'm glad they still are underground in a way as they retain their mysteriousness 😊😊 8k tvs are not being made anymore so the market is extremely small for making 8k releases so that's pretty much the end of that one for me!! In a way I'm quite glad as I think we have reached the mountain top and 4k is the last word if you choose to go there 🤔🤩.....and it's great that the nasties are joining in on the party Paul 😁😁👍👍
That's a pretty impressive list there John, and some cool info as well on the Video Nasty period. I think the only one I might give a try to is House on the Edge of the Park as I did see David Hess's other Italian film Hitch-Hike that he did with Franco Nero, and I think if I can sit through that, I can sit through anything. It boggles my mind that a John Carpenter film ended up on those lists, even if it was one of the ones that allowed films to get repelled off said list, but still, it's mind blowing. Funny enough, it's not too surprising that much of Argento's output, and Italian films in general, made it to the Video Nasties, as Italy really was pushing a lot of boundaries in the 70's and 80's with genre cinema, especially from guys like Argento, Deodato, and Fulci. I've never been a gore hound so that stuff has never interested me, and I could never understand why in many of Fulci's films he was using it as his style seemed to range more on the supernatural rather than on freak acts of science, and his stuff, thus making such effects borderline overkill. The risks taken in the Action Cop films seem minor compared to the risks with the Horror films, but that many of them have aged well over the years seem to say something about that period of filmmaking and the artistry that went into them. I do know Deodato said if he had to do it all over again, he wouldn't have made CH at all, or would've shot it totally differently, but that was just his statement, I'm not sure about the other filmmakers. House on the edge of the park is a genuinely disturbing film. Most of the so called nasties were pretty take compared to today but that film along with the likes of the New York Ripper were actually, genuinely, nasty

It's amazing how these films (tame by todays standards), were banned in the UK during the censorship craziness of the 1980s.
It is Dominic 🤯🤯 shows you how dumb the politicians and people like Mary Whitehouse etc were! But as I say as well, thanks to that they gave these movies the sort of publicity no other films had and secured their places in history 😁😁🤣👏👏 cheers for watching mate 🤩🤩👍👍
I have the majority of these on Blu Ray or 4K/Blu Ray double pack. I’m happy with the picture quality on Blu Ray and won’t be upgrading the ones I have on Blu Ray as I don’t see a huge amount of difference in the picture quality especially if they have a 4K master. It’s great to see these on decent releases as back in the day I owned many of these on VHS which I sold off many years ago and upgraded to DVD then to Blu Ray.

Great list, John, it's amazing what we're getting these says isn't it. The Blood for Dracula 4K is, like Flesh, fantastic. I've not got Hell of the Living Dead yet, I'm going to pick it up - the only thing I lament about the 88 release is that they put it out with the American title. I'd have given a left arm for a version called - the better title in my opinion - Zombie Creeping Flesh, with the original video art! Don't know why they didn't do that.

Awesome video as always, so glad I joined as I would never have seen this vlog. I've only recently started collecting physical again. I sold most of mine back in 2021 (what a pratt) something I sorely regret. But now I'm back this has been a tremendous help as I'm hoping to get most of my collection back but concentrate on 4ķ mainly where I can. My Amazon basket is busting at the seams 😅. I have every release in this video except for The Thing, Cannibal Man, and Hills Have Eyes 4k's. But they are juicy editions too and will buy if I come easily across them👍👍

I bought a 4K player about 4 years ago and have a handful of nasties in that format but I'd rather not upgrade all titles again for the sake of it. Currently I have 87 films from all 3 sections. My previous blu-ray player was region-free and yesterday I wanted to revisit Final Exam, which is, as I discovered region locked. Really don't want to play around with codes etc to try and unlock the Sony UBP-X700 unless I know for definite it'll work.
I can understand you not wanting to upgrade everything Paul, it's an expensive way to do things at times mate!! 😱 that's a good amount Paul 😁😁👏👏 I kept my region free blu Ray player Paul for that reason, so I have the option to use it 🤔 I have the same 4k player, don't think that they have a cheat code but I'm not sure about that, like yourself I wouldn't like to mess about with it 😵💫😵💫😁😁👍👍
Fantastic video John 😀🍿🙌🎸🎶 I still after ‘House On The Edge Of The Park’ & ‘House By The Cemetery’; you do forget that JC’s ‘The Thing’ was a Video Nasty; looked stunning on the big screen 👌 ‘Tenebrae’ is fantastic; I’m tempted to upgrade it to 4K as it looks like a stunning set 😊 I did quite like ‘Nightmare’; decent transfer aswell. I sadly didn’t get the lenticular sleeve on ‘Dead & Buried’; but nonetheless it was great to spot a copy when I was in NYC; bought it at Generation Records when I was there 😀
Love Evil Dead; kinda regret not going to see it on Halloween evening last year when it was reshown in cinema 😱 ‘The Burning’ & ‘The Funhouse’ are awesome films John; really glad I picked them up on Arrow Blu-Ray; I reckon the 4Ks be upper tier 👌 Hope you have a great weekend Mr Perry 😀🙏🍿🎸🎶

Thanks! looking healthy and good John! as a American Collector i honestly think 88 Films & Second Sight are the bench mark for HQ Underground/Cult UHD those are my favorite UK Distributors (The odd thing about Fulci’s Zombie the Laserdisc was actually so much better looking then the Original Anchorbay dvd (You’d think that dvd was a VHS transfer to dvd) Blue Underground gets overlooked imo the UHD of The NY Ripper also looks flawless at times it pops like 3D (Great video)

It goes to show that movies like Zombie weren't really taken that seriously until about 15 years ago when serious restoration projects were put into place!! The dialogue doesn't sync up properly for the beginning of Suspiria 4k. It corrects itself though. I think it's the Synapse version.

So the J card on your House By The Cemetery has the same printing error as mine - so its the entire tun. The aspect ratio of the cover and the J card is different so the eyes and nose dont line up. Not a deal breaker by any means but unexpected. (Okay it bugs me - it just does!) :)
The Thing looks insane - almost too good but I cant get over the audio issues. Zombie is perfection.

I say a big NOOOO to shrinkwrap! The first thing I do when I get a delivery is remove all the shrink-wrap, all the stickers and the J-Card gets folded up and put inside the case LOL

It's a good 4k Wolfie no doubt about it! I paid about £40 for Suspiria on release and your right it's always been expensive! If you hear anybody re releasing Suspiria using Synapse's master jump on it 👍👍👍 the Synapse 4k is just perfection Wolfie....but Cult films is a definite good 4k 👍👍👍👍
The proper 4k uhd release on cult films is very rare and more expensive than the synapse release, the standard cult films blu ray is on Amazon advertised as 4k... it's not, it's a blu ray from the 4k scan.
