Dennis Rodman Battles Bill Laimbeer in First Return to Detroit (Rodman Ejected)

  • November 19, 1993 - After seven years of teaming up for multiple championships, a pile of all-star appearances, and countless WWE-style defensive efforts, Dennis Rodman and Bill Laimbeer found themselves on opposite sides for the first and only time of their respective NBA careers.
The fireworks kicked off less than a minute into the game, with the newly blonde Dennis Rodman drawing a technical foul following the first basket of the night. Laimbeer and Rodman would continue to grapple throughout the evening, culminating in Rodman's ejection with less than three minutes remaining in a 95-86 Spurs loss.
Laimbeer was facing his own bit of controversy at the time. Just three days prior, teammate Isiah Thomas had broken his hand punching Laimbeer in practice. This event came just weeks after Thomas had also broken a rib while absorbing a Laimbeer elbow.
Despite a productive stretch of basketball immediately following the fracas (a three-game period in which he averaged 20.3 points and 6.7 rebounds at age 36), Laimbeer remained sensitive to his reputation within his adopted hometown. Citing a loss of desire at the time, Laimbeer announced his retirement just nine days following his matchup with Dennis Rodman.

Rodman could not be controlled by David Robinson or John Lucas in San Antonio. It would take players with the presence of a Michael Jordan or Isiah Thomas or a coach with the authority such as Chuck Daley or Phil Jackson to keep Rodman focused. Even Shaq and Kobe with Kurt Rambis as head coach could not keep Rodman on track. I have a feeling that if Phil Jackson had started with the Lakers in the '98-'99 season, he would have been able to keep Rodman mentally and emotionally focused for them to win the championship. They certainly had the talent with a Shaq who was still peaking, Kobe who was starting at that point and some veterans.

Big difference my friend and Three Three Championships in a row. Tells you the system wasn't working in San Antonio. No matter how you try to explain it. Dennis will you his all when you show that you want him and back him. Leadership comes in all different types of ways. I'm from the chi and I seen this dude bust his ass, why because he had the support and the fans. So again three championships from this dude giving his all. I was pissed when he got suspended for kicking a photographer for many games or getting toss. But when he plays he flat hustle and play. Tim Duncan gets so much love because he is a team player, Robinson was all about himself. Pistons won championships with Rodman. The 1993-1994 Pistons were in rebuild mode two seasons after Chuck Daly resigned Jack McCloskey left for Minnesota and players were either traded or waived….Bill Laimbeer retired nine games into the 93-94 season..smh…all those years of being a detroit bad boy caught up with him and couldn’t take the heat….Sean Elliott didn’t fit in Detroit Isaiah Thomas retired after the season Sean Elliott was traded back to the Spurs in the off season and the following season Billy McKinney And Don Chaney were fired…RIP Chuck Daly And Jack McCloskey…Why were the 93-94 Pistons not so good that season?

The real crime was the Pistons not bringing back Vinnie Johnson and James Edwards for the 1991-92 season... when they didn't bring those guys back, their championship hopes were over... they could have kept John Salley in '92-'93 and did good getting Alvin Robertson and Danny Young while getting another big in Olden Polynice--which ironically would have kept them in contention... they really messed up breaking up their roster for '91-'92.

@@plainsimple244 yes definitely…I watched a John Salley interview and when he was traded from the Pistons to the heat in 1992, he wasn’t happy when the Pistons kept him over terry mills..another thing I forgot to add was the Pistons releasing Mark Aguirre And he retired before the end of the 93-94 season after playing a few games with the clippers…

@@beezy22 Yeah, the way it ended for 'The Bad Boys' was terribly sad... just the Isiah wrist injury alone messing up his career... if I had things my way, they would have kept everyone while adding guys here-and-there to help out the guards and frontline until either Vinnie Johnson or Edwards retired gracefully...but Salley and Edwards could play for the '96 Bulls and Rodman was in his prime during 1993-94 but they gave up on Vinnie Johnson way too early... he deserved more...even if you add another guard, still play Vinnie his time so he can go out with a bang...but I read a report that Vinnie Johnson not being there anymore had more to do with him doing Rodman's wife than anything...so there's that... I still would have started Aguirre game 1 in 1991-92 and gave him that job and just use Lance Blanks to back up Joe Dumars all year while letting Walker help out Isiah...you have to use your ability to win but they messed it all up.

@@philipthomas7095 Oh yeah, Laimbeer was only there for the Pistons, he said that in his press conference and he didn't want to play...matter of fact Laim' didn't like basketball, he did it for the money and just liked his role... the 'all-important' role... he was a gem.
