Clapton was returning a favor to Knopfler for touring with him previously. Jack Sonni couldn't make it as his wife was in labor, and there was no time or place really to allow Clapton to showboat his talents. Besides, the music was all Dire Straits. Where would you insert an appropriate solo on someone else's songs? A professional knows when to step up and when to step back.

Absolutely out of this world, and the Sexiest Sax Solo EVER! I remember watching this live way back then, I mean the whole day was Magic but Dire Straits were just out of this universe, I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing that night, I actually recorded the whole gig on VHS and for years used to play it especially when I had a good few pints in me, but then lost the tapes when I was moving home but thank God for CZcams I can watch it again and again. This version lasts 11 mins, but when I saw them live in Dublin, Ireland, at The Point Depot, they played R&J for 16 mins and when the finished the applause nearly brought the house down literally, I also love it for the best chat up line ever, "You And Me Babe, How Bout It". Brilliant Track, Brilliant Band.

Me too, I recorded the entire concert on VHS, and I was absolutely spellbound and captivated by this performance. To my great despair the VHS tape ended I n the middle of the sax solo so I quickly had to change tapes, made me furious 😡 Later I found a way to copy the VHS tape to an audio tape, so I cut both parts of the song from two VHS tapes together on one audio tape. Unfortunately there was this gap in the middle with 30 seconds of the sax solo missing, but nevertheless this became by far the most frequently played song on my tape deck in my car and on my Walkman. I still have the audio tape, kept it for sentimental reasons, although I don‘t have any tape deck anymore. Thank goodness there‘s CZcams so I can watch it as often as I want to, and of course I have a digital extract for my cellphone. Hardly a day goes by without me listening to it, I just don‘t get tired of listening, indulging in a sweet trip down memory lane every single time.

Telegraph road alchemy live is one of the best live performances of all time by anyone and for bit of beautiful genius Romeo and Juliet Wembley ‘88 with Eric Clapton is great. Anything from the Basel concert in 92 as well. My favourite guitarist and band, always played things differently on every tour. so you can watch the same song live 6 times in a row and get a completely different vibe each time.
