I was a Crew Chief at Danang, Vietnam on these rugged, armor plated beauties. They saved alot of lives.

Thank you for your service to our country! I'm sure you have plenty of stories to tell about the Spad and its pilots.

It took the initiative of a Navy commander (Ettinger?) to get armour fitted to the most vulnerable area of the Skyraider airframe, behind the engine. When he first suggested fitting armour to reduce the number of Korean War shootdowns, the 'higher echelon' people told him to keep his nose out, but he persisted.

I was in Da Nang in 1969-70. We had these in the 56th SOS. I was an avionics technician and we supported them. What a gung-ho group of guys. If I remember correctly, the pilots were all volunteers and the plane would carry more than it's own weight in ordinance. They were ideal for close air support and used during pilot rescue. These things burned lots of oil because the wings would be covered with oil. I loved hearing these things run. The Navy originally had these birds in the early 50's. When the Air Force brought then out of mothballs and outfitted them for service in Viet Nam, they put lots of armor plating in them. They were hard to shoot down.

What a great aircraft, nicely displayed (what happened to the takeoff?). I was fortunate enough to fly one, a 2 seat A5E at Bien Hoa in 1966. What a shame that modern camera phone technology can't handle rotating props and makes them do weird things like stop when the aircraft is taxying! Thanks for a nice little video.

The effects you mention, David, have to do w/ frame rate of the camera...in most respects, the video is superior to broadcast video from 1966 by a long shot...

My wife and I were in TN last month. She is from there and my sister and a brother live out there. In the 29 years that I had gone out there, I had never been to the museum until this last time.My sister had all of my father's flight logs from his Air Force career. I checked tail numbers and discovered that my dad had flown this exact airplane in Vietnam. It was before the "Lieutenant America" was painted on the nose cone. That was done by the crew the following year.

If he's still around, give your father thanks for his service in a hot war, from a Cold War soldier...1973 - 1985...

¡Salud!
