My father was an Airdale with VA-175 (Devils Diplomats) in 1957 to 1958 on board CVA-42, Franklin D.Roosevelt. At the time they were flying the AD-6’s. He told me lots of stories about working in the Spads. He did tell me that they were equipped to deliver nuclear bombs and in the Med Sea during the Suez crisis, they did. My father lived those planes and was very proud to be part of that fighter Squad.
VA-175 was disbanded after that cruise due to the loss of so many of the planes during a search and recovery operation north of the Arctic Circle. It was in interesting story my dad told.
I lost my dad 9 years ago. Seeing this video and his favorite airplane made me feel a little closer to him. Thank you for posting.

So very cool! I came across your video as I'm doing research on drawing an A-1E Skyraider for the AFROTC at the University of Utah. It's a great interview, and great information, thank you.

Check that MIG shootdown - it was VA-25 , "Fist of the Fleet", flying off the USS Midway.

Check out VA 176. The bumblebee was our creation, and we did have MiG kills, off The Intrepid in 66. The Va 25 kill was before this, and I worked with him at Delta. Clint Johnson was his name as I recall. Tom ( Lurch ) Patton was the 176 pilot that you can find info on if interested.

This guy just claimed the A-1 was the first prop plane designed to deliver atomic bombs? But the B-29...?

    I guess it was a three-sandwich airplane.
