    Because of the A-1 Skyraider and the pilots who flew them two of my uncles are alive today. Both of them ran recon missions in Vietnam at different times and often times they had to extract under heavy fire. Sandy's saved them, Thank you Douglas Aircraft for making a great aircraft.

    One of my favorites....but oh my hell, announcers need to shut their pie holes during the actual fly by! Always!

      But instead, they do all the opposite raising their voice as if people were actually paying them any attention.

    I saw a Skyraider today at the Wings Over Houston air show. I didn't know that it could take off with more payload than the plane actually weighs. What a badass airframe!

    Nice. I forget which year it was, but there was an operational Skyraider at my local air show. It was part of a string of years featuring different prop planes (Mustang, Corsair, and Wildcat).

    Put this plane and the A10 back into full production for a fraction of the cost of some of this new crap !

      Agreed.

    • @kcz1093
      @kcz1093 Před 6 lety +8

      You know the reasons A10 was put into production was because they wanted Something like the A1 but more survivable in post Vietnam Era. Defense analysts concluded showed in a conventional war the A1 would be too vulnerable against war against the Warsaw pact. Even later parts of the Vietnam war the A1s were pulled from incursions into the North and relgated to Strict CAS or CSAR duties due to the saturation of heavy air defenses which already were giving Fighter Bomber jets a tough time.
      Now A10' itself is Kinda obselete for modern conflicts save for lower intensity wars againt Banna Republics or against Extermist Mid east militants.
      A1 is obselete. Cheaper isnt better if it means producing something inferior and obsolete. A10 may have been more expensive but It was hands down better in Ever regard.

      K Cz I believe for cas in the modern battlefield such as Afghanistan Iraq Syria where aa threats are minimal the a1 would be just as effective as the a10

    • @johnosbourn4312
      @johnosbourn4312 Před 3 lety

      Totally impossible, because the tooling for the A-10 is, for the most part, no longer available, and the Skyraider ended production, back in the mid to late 50's, so there's no way DOD can order new versions of those two fighters, ever, and in today's world, the Skyraider wouldn't be able to use today's precision guided munitions, and targeting sensors, along with today's avionics systems. Also, the Skyraider just wouldn't be able to protect its self, and the pilot, from today's advanced air defenses.

    The first Skyraider is an AD-4NA, because of the cabin entry door on both sides of the fuselage, and the second one is an A-1H, because it doesn't have the entry doors that the AD-4NA has.

    I always thought the turboprop Skyraider project should of happened. The A2D Skyshark should have been more successful in my opinion. I think it would of been a aircraft that would be useful for the military even to this day! They screwed up thinking that aircraft was obsolete because of jets.

    • @TheKusa5

      the original designation for the Skyraider was AD-1, upgrade models were AD-2, AD-3, so on so fourth, then they were renamed A-1 with upgraded models being A-1D, A-1F, you get what I mean.

    • @Bluenose352
      @Bluenose352 Před 3 lety

      I think there may have been a mix up though. Naked Fanny is an AD-4. Unless I heard him incorrectly? Maybe he said Bad News? Which is an AD-1 I believe.

      It was built during the korean war, so not quite the jet age, but still kinda in the jet age. I mean they used p-51s in the korean war.

    • @SpartacusColo
      @SpartacusColo Před rokem

      While the jet engine had been developed, and some jet warplanes had been built and seen service, prop fighters and bombers were still the norm, by far, when this plane was built: first flight was 1945. It just missed service in WW II.
